The Bangladeshi middle class has been growing steadily- with a population half of that of USA, the Bangladeshi market is booming as it opens up to welcome the world. Local giants have also risen to face the global challenge. In 2004, Bashundhara City opened up- one of the largest malls in South Asia. Each day 25,000 people visit the mall.

And in 2013- Dhaka will open the 12th largest mall in the world and largest in South Asia with a leasable area of 4.1 million square feet & total area of 5.45 million square feet. It will have its own power-plant, the basements aside from a parking will also hold supermarkets and hypermarkets. The ground floor will be for live entertainment- from live musicals to fashion shows. Upto the 5th floor will be branded and non-branded stores, computer booths, banks etc. The mall will also have its own open air theme park, gym, health club, 2 swimming pools, a 5 star hotel, a hospital, exhibition hall, cineplex, karaoke, mosque and bowling alley.

Hindu festival of Diwali- the celebration of light. With 90% Muslims, Bangladesh is the 3rd largest majority Muslim country in the world. But our population stands so large that the 10% of the people who are Hindus also make us the 2nd largest Hindu population in the world- as a result we grew up in a culture where Hindus join the Eid festivities and Muslims join celebrations such as Holi. I love the fact that our country is so diverse- diversity from childhood breeds toelrance, respect and understanding.

Bangladeshi military is the 33rd largest in number of troops. Even though we never pursued the arms-race of nearby regional rivals India & Pakistan, it was only natural that utilizing our population- we build up an army large enough to give a sense of security to our distinct culture, values & heritage. Bangladesh army although ruled the country for half its history, continues to be popular because many view their reign as a more successful one than that of democracy. A global ranking of power- based on population, resources, military strength and economy measures Bangladesh as the 23rd largest power in the world though our influence is often left unseen because of larger neighbors India (3rd) and Pakistan (13th).
