Kochi International Film Festival: Kurosawa classics for film buffs
Quote:

A few of his greatest movies will be included under a special category titled
‘The centenary of masters’, one of the major highlights of the week-long festival.

The Kochi International Film Festival (KIFF) scheduled to begin on December 16 will pay tribute to the legendary film maker Akira Kurosawa.

A few of his greatest movies will be included under a special category titled ‘The centenary of masters’, one of the major highlights of the week-long festival.

The specialty of the package is that it will showcase the movies in a chronological order which is in tune with the turn of events that happened in the life of Kurosawa, whose centenary was celebrated in 2010.

“This will be a fitting tribute to Kurosawa who directed 30 films in a career spanning 57 years,” said KIFF director Raveendran. The films selected for the festival include ‘The most beautiful’, ‘Sanshiro Sugata’, ‘No Regrets for Our Youth’, ‘Rashomon’, ‘Throne of Blood’, ‘The Lower Depths’ and ‘Dodes’ka-den’.

The ‘most beautiful’ narrates the tale of seven young women and is set in the backdrop of second world war. The movie depicts the dedication and devotion of these women towards their work amidst hardships and injury.

“The films, including ‘Sanshiro Suagata’ which was filmed in 1945 during the end of World War II and ‘No regrets for our youth,’ are films that mark the beginning of his glorious career,” says Raveendran.

The festival will also feature Rashomon (1950), the movie which shows a crime from the point of view of different persons. “The movie holds utmost importance in Kurosawa’s career. Rashomon not only won critical acclaim and awards but also enjoyed commercial success and opened new windows for Japanese films to the intentional arena,” he added .

The KIFF will be held at five theatres in the city from December 16 to 23.

Kolkata actor in Madras Cafe

Lot's of B'wood movies are scened in Kochi these days.
Quote:

Having done cameos in 30 films, Arijit Dutta makes his Bollywood debut with Shoojit's next

Prosenjit Chatterjee is no more a part of it, but a lot seems to be brewing at Shoojit Sircar's Madras Cafe. Arijit Dutta has been roped in to play an LTTE commando in the film, which will also mark his Bollywood debut.

From what has emerged so far, Prosenjit too was supposed to play a militant in the film. But Arijit says he is not doing the role, which was turned down by the actor. "I was already a part of the venture before Prosenjit Chatterjee backed out. Even then, I'm the only actor from Kolkata to be a part of the venture." Talking about how he was signed on for the role, Arijit says, "Around a month back, I met Shoojit at a party. He tapped my shoulder and when I turned around, he said, 'Will you do a role in my film?' I was pleasantly surprised, but thought it was for a Bengali film, since Shoojit was the producer of Aparajita Tumi. Next I got calls from the unit and Shoojit also asked me to send him my portfolio pictures in jungle gear and Gandhi specs. He loved what he saw and I landed myself the role."

Arijit will be joining the unit in Cochin from December 12, where he has a three-day schedule, before heading to Delhi and Mumbai to complete the next leg of the shoot. All geared up to begin shooting, Arijit says, "The script has been sent to me, but the best part about Shoojit is that he doesn't insist on cramming the dialogues. There's a lot of room for improvization." So, will he be more focussed on acting from now on, considering that he has only done cameos in Tollywood films so far? "For me, acting has always been fun. I've done cameos in 30 films, but after Madras Cafe and also Goutam Ghose's Shunyo Awnko, where I play an activist, I think I'll be more choosy about roles," he says.

Amruta Patki to star in Paisa Paisa
Quote:

The model-turned-actress features in the promotional song of Prashanth Murali's Indrajith-Mamta Mohandas starrer

Here's one more newcomer testing the waters in M-Town. Model-turned-actress Amruta Patki is now in Kochi shooting for her first Malayalam film, albeit in its promotional song. This is a first in the Malayalam film industry for Amruta, who has earlier starred in the Hindi film Hide and Seek.

"I've known Paisa Paisa producer Raj Zacharia for a long time now. He has also shot me for an ad film. So when he said he's looking for a face with an international appeal for the promo song of the film and offered me to play the part, I gladly agreed. Moreover, I was considering making an entry into the South film industry as well. So, things just fell in place," Amruta tells us.

While she had Malayalam lines to lip sync in the Malayalam-English song, Amruta says she managed just fine, what with a crew that was so helpful. "Though I've modelled for many South brands, this is the first time I'm working in the south film industry. And I'm all in awe. Just two days into the shoot and I'm impressed by how things work here. Everyone is so down-to-earth and systematic. While my song shoot was scheduled to get over by 9.30 last night, choreographer Gayathri had co-ordinated everything so well that we could pack up two hours in advance. The way the industry respects time is awesome. It goes on to save a lot of money too," she states.

While she's serious about carving a niche down south, Amruta tells us that she's currently in talks with a handful of filmmakers for some films. "Things are just shaping up; I'll let you into the details when concrete plans are chalked out," she signs off.

The M.I.A factor
Quote:

Sri Lankan-British singing sensation M.I.A will perform for the first time in India as part of the Kochi Muziris Biennale. She speaks to Priyadershini S. about her music rooted in dissent, politics, art, spirituality and India

She came rapping into the hearts of the young. Rapping about issues that the world would conveniently like to forget. Her original style of electronic, hip hop and world music caught the imagination of a generation wired together in cyberspace. Her strikingly fresh style in art engaged onlookers. Through the two, art and music, her stage acquired a new lingo, a cool dimension. She received acclaim and phenomenal success almost immediately. British singing sensation of Tamil descent, Mathangi Maya Arulpragasam, M.I.A. will be presenting a music concert, her first in India, at the inauguration of the Kochi Muziris Biennale. Her art work too will be exhibited during the event.

With Madonna

M.I.A. has shared stage space with musical greats like Madonna and Rihanna, standing there in her own right. She has sung and been a part of the A.R. Rahman’s team for the music of Slumdog Millionaire.

Known for her avant-garde music, she has been nominated twice for the Grammy awards, an Academy award, the Mercury Prize and the Alternative Turner Prize award. And yet M.I.A. is nervous about her concert here. “It is more nerve-wracking than singing along with Madonna,” she says, in her slow drawl, sitting elegantly in the Old Harbour Hotel in Fort Kochi, unsure if her music will strike a chord with listeners here. M.I.A. is without her tour group and that makes her task a real challenge.

She plans to give an Indian touch to the concert by making interactive music with traditional local musicians and involving children from schools close by. “I am the bridge between the East and the West, I don’t want to abandon one for the other,” she says, indicating the global space that she has created with her music and art.

M.I.A.’s story is one of displacement of a young girl who fled from war-torn Jaffna to Chennai and moved on to London. There she created a space for her and her countrymen. The Tamil cause features strongly in her music and yet the singer has moved above to encompass a global approach to issues of discrimination, genocide, migration, displacement and acceptance.

Maya’s father Arul Pragasam was a Tamil activist and later became a mediator between the Tamil and the Sri Lankan government. But M.I.A. and her brother saw little of their father. What they saw and experienced were hardships of a life of a refugee, the struggle to merge with a new culture, adopt and adapt and be accepted. She says with the maturity of a person much ahead of her 37 years, “It is important to not let politics become contagious,” and talks of a tumultuous journey that need not end in hate and revenge but in a reincarnated form where peace rules.

M.I.A?

Her name M.I.A. evokes curiosity. “It is a coincidence that Mathangi is the Goddess of Music and the spoken word, which can be rap,” she says elucidating that she found this information on research. “The Goddess is an untouchable and can be a refugee; she carries a sword for a cause, and in the chant- Aum Aim Hrim …. the word AIM is an anagram for M.I.A. M.I.A.also stands for ‘Missing In Action’, which often happens to people in war-torn zones.”

MIA began her studies as an art student, making posters, covers, tee shirts, set designs and stage designs. “The way I was doing it was cool. It was nice to have music as a platform for art because it got into popular commercial culture. I had to make my space look artistic rather than putting my art in a gallery. This led to visual appearance onto the Internet.”

Her art is not conceptual but direct like her music. Her first album, Arular, 2005, named after her father, was about finding something new. “I was angry but optimistic,” she says. With Kala, her next album, named after her mother, she moved on to discovering herself. “I discovered that everybody was the same- Ram, Sam or Cham, be it Indian, American or Chinese.” Maya, her third album, came at a time when China banned Google, When Blackberry was suspected of spying, when FaceBook was sold to Google. It was in an era when IP was currency. It was people’s lives in personal details. Maya was literally about the concept of ‘maya’ in Hinduism, of illusion. After Maya, she says she came up with a tough love album where her fans had to find the gems and find real information, she says.

M.I.A. feels very close to India, having studied in Chennai in her early years. “I came to India because it was open to me again. I was involved with Slumdog Millionaire. That happens all the time in India. There is an ‘Indian Dream’ and I want to find out about that.” Her visit has brought her closer to Indian spirituality. She discovered the Goddess who stands for her name and represents freedom of speech, somewhere simulating the Goddess through her music and art.

“The concept of freedom of speech is 5,000 year old, represented by a woman who is an untouchable and a refugee, who fights for free speech and rapping. It is not new to India. This discovery was very liberating. I was always struggling to communicate this. India made me realise this concept.”

Her outlook, shaped by her travails, is global and secular and yet at this point she finds herself attracted by spirituality. “I never pigeonhole my self into any religion but I feel it has found me. I am trying to make sense of it….the essence of the Mathangi concept.”

Kerala connect

Kerala is not new to M.I.A. either. She was here in 2005 “in the jungles” to make a music video with Rajesh Touchriver, whom she tracked via the Internet.

The art that Mathangi will be presenting is conceptualised on the fact that ancient Indian wisdom lies buried under a heap of present day plastic, plastic of credit cards, holograms and lenticular materials. It is a concept that has to be discussed now- money, cheap labour, piracy, counterfeiting…”

The Tamil issue is close to her heart. She reacts to it with maturity. “Tamils all over the world have a sense of belonging to the world itself but our ancient roots come from India. I would like to explore India. I will keep coming back. This is the closest I can get to home,” she says, with a tinge of rue.

So many are happening, but events are getting cluttered!!!! It spoils the mood.... Now in this month alone, we are having Biennale, GKSF, Film Festival, numerous of private festivals, Book Festival etc.......

Instead, like Dubai, we too must have a calender of events, making the events to spread thro' out the year and city getting into one mood for each festival time, unlike multiple things at one time and nothing during other time.......

Just now, IFFK has over, naturally before its hangover finished, another film festival is not indeed good.... Rather it would have been good if placed in Feb or March.....

October - March is the peak season of tourism in Kerala. We are receiving huge number of high spending international tourists now. So this is the best time to showcase Kochi. Moreover, half the year is drenched in rain, when we cannot hold big events, unlike DXB which doesn't have to counter such climate

Ayushmann Khurrana turns assistant director for Shoojit’s next film
Quote:

Don’t be surprised if you see Ayushmaan Khurrana’s name in the credits as an AD (assistant director) for Shoojit Sircar’s Madras Café. The actor is flying to Kochi on December 20 to join the crew for five days.

In fact, only a few days ago, he spent five days on the sets. “I’ve never been idle on a film set. I enjoy watching actors perform and the director’s involvement in a scene,” says Ayushmann, who also worked as the fourth AD for a few days on Vicky Donor.

In the process, it seems, Ayushmann started enjoying himself. “In fact, I told Shoojit, ‘If people don’t like me in Vicky Donor, you have to take me on as the fourth AD. But thank God, the film worked and I have got more offers. Then one day, Shoojit called up and said, ‘You don’t have time to turn up on the sets now?’ That’s when I decided to go on the Madras Café sets.”

I too felt, as till now even their website was not updated......

Ofcourse we can say its teething troubles for first time experience.... The prime issue, this time is too unfit for another film festival.... In Asia itself, we were having 3 festivals almost same time- IFFI, IFFK and Dubai Film Festival.... Nearly 2 dozen film festivals are going here and there across world, in these weeks....

Adding another one, especially within 2 days after ending of another popular FF- IFFK, is itself a big folly, that too no serious preparations took place or promotions etc.....

In a week's time, big Xmas Releases are going to come up, straining the theatres and viewers....... In addition Biennale, Carnival, GKSF, numerous of events happening in our city same time....

It was a big mistake to host at this time. Ideally, it should be held either in Oct last week or mid of Jan or first week of Feb.......... Hope they do the same next time......

Hopefully by next season, Cinepolis will be ready. If they can host there, the 11 screens at single place, would be ideal....... Perhaps, Kavitha and Shenoys can be another major centers.....
