That was a failure of 1 of the 6 power generators. It could have easily flown to to it's destination with 5 power generators but only because it's a new plane for United they are very cautious and diverted.

The media is all over it and turns the last 2 issues into something too big, here's a better analysis of the situation:

Teething Pains for the Boeing 787

What's actually far more worrying for Boeing is that the conflict with the Unions in Everett is now heading towards a strike.

Union: ‘Very high chance’ of Boeing strike in February

SPEEA, the union is actually talking about a 60 days strike, that's months without production and deliveries on the Everett build 747s, 767s, 787s and most importantly the 777s. For the 787 is could mean that the projected production rate increases won't be realized in 2013 and that the 1st assembly of the 787-9 will be delayed.

There's still 1.5 month to negotiate, and a federal Mediator is trying to get the 2 parties closer together so there's still a big chance of a last minute agreement. Both parties play it hard, but a strike is not good neither Boeing or the workers.

Btw, the production in Charleston should continue since that factory is not unionised.

Qatar Dreamliner Grounded on Fault Echoing United Jet’s

Qatar Airways Ltd. said a 787 jet received from Boeing Co. (BA) this week has been grounded with a faulty generator, a problem similar to one that forced the emergency landing of a Dreamliner operated by United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL)

Qatar Air’s third 787 exhibited the failure on its delivery flight from the U.S., Akbar Al Baker, the Gulf carrier’s chief executive officer, said today at London’s Heathrow airport. The plane has been grounded since Dec. 9 and may remain so for at least four days while Boeing sends spares and a recovery team.

“These problems are unacceptable because this aircraft has been flying for the last 14 months,” Al Baker said in an interview, referring to the Dreamliner, which entered commercial service late last year. “They have to get their act together very fast because we at Qatar Airways will not accept any more defects.”

Still no. First 767 will be retired in January, when LOT will start flights to Chicago with 787. Next ones with next destinations. All 767 will be retired in March 2013.

All Things 787 has posted a new update of the upcoming production slots.
http://nyc787.blogspot.nl/2012/12/78...on-update.html

He has now added the LN116 to LN130 to the list.

The LN 126 will be the 1st 787-9, it will go into assembly in June and that will happen in the surge line.

There are 2 new airlines on the list.
LN123 - 1st 787-8 for QANTAS/Jetstar
LN128 - 1st 787-8 for Royal Brunei Airlines

The other are mostly the usual suspects, ANA, JAL, LAN, United and Qatar. The will be one for China Southern, 1 for BA and 2 more for Aeromexico who has said that they will take delivery of their 1st one in August.
