China prepares to grow vegetables on Mars
Chinese astronauts are preparing to grow fresh vegetables on Mars and the moon after researchers successfully completed a preliminary test in Beijing, state media reported.
Four kinds of vegetables were grown in an "ecological life support system", a 300 cubic metre cabin which will allow astronauts to develop their own stocks of air, water and food while on space missions, Xinhua news agency said Monday.
The system, which relies on plants and algae, is "expected to be used in extra-terrestrial bases on the moon or Mars", the report said.
Participants in the experiment could "harvest fresh vegetables for meals", Xinhua quoted Deng Yibing, a researcher at Beijing's Chinese Astronaut Research and Training Centre, as saying.
"Chinese astronauts may get fresh vegetables and oxygen supplies by gardening in extra-terrestrial bases in the future," the report said, adding that the experiment was the first of its kind in China.
China has said it will land an exploratory craft on the moon for the first time next year, as part of an ambitious space programme that includes a long-term plan for a manned moon landing.
The Asian superpower has been ramping up its manned space activities as the United States, long the leader in the field, has scaled back some of its programmes, such as retiring its iconic space shuttle fleet.
In its last white paper on space, China said it was working towards landing a man on the moon -- a feat so far only achieved by the United States, most recently in 1972 -- although it did not give a time frame.
China's first astronaut Yang Liwei said last month that Chinese astronauts may start a branch of China's ruling Communist Party in space, state media reported.
"If we establish a party branch in space, it would also be the 'highest' of its kind in the world," Xinhua quoted Yang as saying.
The astronaut was launched into space and orbited the earth aboard the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft in 2003.

I guess this is considered "science"?

SPOT THE CHEATER | Scientists find proof of women's intuition - and men's cluelessness

Quote:
HONG KONG - Women can tell with some accuracy whether an unfamiliar male is faithful simply by looking at his face, but men seem to lack the same ability when checking out women, according to an Australian study published on Wednesday.

In a paper that appeared in the journal Biology Letters, the researchers found that women tended to make that judgement based on how masculine-looking the man was.

"Women's ratings of unfaithfulness showed small-moderate, significant correlations with measures of actual infidelity," wrote the team, led by Gillian Rhodes at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders at the University of Western Australia in Perth.

"More masculine-looking men (were) rated as more probable to be unfaithful and having a sexual history of being more unfaithful."

Attractiveness was not a factor in the women making the link.

In the study, 34 men and 34 women were shown colour photographs of 189 Caucasian adult faces and asked to rate them for faithfulness.

The researchers compared their answers to the self-reported sexual histories of the 189 individuals and found that the women participants were better able to tell who was faithful and who was not.

"We provide the first evidence that faithfulness judgements, based solely on facial appearance, have a kernel of truth," they wrote in the paper.

Men, on the other hand, seemed to have no clue. They tended to perceive attractive, feminine women to be unfaithful, when there was no evidence that they were, the scientists noted.

Faithfulness is seen as important in the context of sexual relationships and mate choice, the scientists wrote in the paper. Men with unfaithful partners risk raising another man's child, while women with unfaithful partners risk losing some, or even all, parental and other resources to competitors.

UP monorail system aims to address traffic problems

by Voltaire Tupaz
Posted on 12/05/2012 7:40 PM | Updated 12/05/2012 8:04 PM

MANILA, Philippines - The country’s first monorail system is being developed by the University of the Philippines.
The project aims to ease traffic congestion, a big problem in urban centers.
Voltaire Tupaz reports.
The two coaches of the first homegrown monorail in the Philippines are already up on the track. This December, their stability, brake distance, and power will be tested along a track built inside the UP Diliman Campus.
The construction of the test track of the first monorail system in the country is ongoing here in UP Diliman. It stands at an elevation of about 6 meters, and stretches from CP Garcia to Jacinto St near the College of Fine Arts, about 500 meters long.
A collaboration between the state university and the Department of Science and Technology developers hope it will jumpstart the development of the country's stagnated railway system.

DR ELVIRA ZAMORA, UP SYSTEM VP FOR DEV’T: It is also one of the key projects of the PNoy administration. The objective is to develop and deploy a technology for mass transport that will be efficient and at the same time save money for the country.
Traffic congestion is a big problem in urban centers. More than 900,000 passenger cars are registered nationwide. Everyday, over 23,000 buses, 36,000 taxis, and 217,000 jeepneys provide public transport services to Filipinos, 80% of whom commute to work, school and other destinations.
These congest roads-- the most dense in Southeast Asia except Singapore.Traffic costs the country 2% of the GDP in lost opportunities.
But will the monorail address the worsening traffic problem?

DR. REGIN REGIDOR, NAT’L CENTER FOR TRANSPORTATION STUDIES: The capacity will not be the same as the EDSA MRT or the LRT2 - the country's existing systems - because these systems have relatively big capacities. So there's a limitation. The question is, "Where should it be placed?" Definitely it has a similar or better capacity than our regular buses. So it should have better capacities than the jeepneys if it's implemented as a mode of public transportation.
But Regidor says the monorail may be the answer to problems in specific locations.
DR. REGIN REGIDOR: We can be hopeful, but we have to temper our expectations because we might be expecting that the system will be like Japan's bullet train. No, it's not. That would be too much. But if we are able to fix this system, it will really be feasible for airports and CBDs (Central Business Districts) .
The monorail is just a prototype for research. If it works, it will be a major step towards an effective mass transit system.

More so the need to be careful with Chinese imports. Baka ano pa ang kung nandyan sa Mars na mapunta sa mga vegetables

National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology has a new home and new equipment. Hopefully this will spur research in the Philippines. One that is relevant to our current challenges.

^ Great! Is it funded by private investors, the state or what?

We indeed need to focus on the big issues again! Let's finally get humans to Mars!

Is that research facility in the Philippines? If so, the great.

We could breakthrough in Physics if that's the case.

I hope di magaya sa IRRI. I mean, we have the IRRI but we have been a rice importer for so long

the IRRI was very instrumental that helped prevented world hunger.

except during Marcos, effective managing the country to become a rice exporter is not an easy task as its topography does not have sufficient flat terrains conducive for planting rice, unlike in rice exporting countries as Thailand.

on the contrary, ang daming constructions ng laboratory and buildings sa UP. Institute of Chemistry, has its own research building. Same for Physics, Math, Biology, etc etc. All sparkling new.
