Still nothing specific when new trees will arrive
![]() from http://www.wtc.com/news/c/construction-updates WTC Construction Update, November 2012 National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center The National September 11 Museum is in the midst of interior fit-out and artifact installation in the underground space with the opening date TBA. Within the Pavilion, electrical contractors are installing buss ducts and working on wire terminations on the 3rd floor, while carpenters are installing black iron and framing on the 1st floor's walls and ceiling. In the Memorial Museum, the plumbing contractors have begun installing trolley beams in the north mechanical room and electrical contractors are working on lighting controls, the electric feed for passenger elevators. With more than 225 trees now on site, more soil installation and tree planting is underway and will continue in phases through 2013. The Memorial reflecting pools and waterfalls were commissioned in late August 2011 with the bronze nameplate installation completed in June 2011. The "Survivors Stairway" was relocated to its permanent home in the underground Memorial in December 2008 and the Slurry wall reinforcement was completed in spring 2009. 75% of the Memorial Plaza opened on September 11, 2011 and has hosted over 4.5 million visitors to date. |

Has anyone noticed that they are about to reopen the "hatch" near the north pool?

I've noticed that the memorial section by the north pool and the museum has been cleared up. I wonder if they will place some dirt and get the area ready for the trees soon. And Swiddle, what is that "hatch" for?

it almost looks like they are preparing the northeast corner to be finished up finally. No trees yet but does look cleaner than earlier months.

Will the Museum open on Sept 11, 2013 or has that been pushed back to Sept 11, 2014?

Current situation is repairing all the electrical systems and related infrastructure that was damaged by Sandy, dewatering the below ground museum level is complete and evaluations on different areas is underway. Museum is scheduled to be open and functional by the 12th anniversary.

They have closed the temporary gap for the removal of the damaged equipment, only pavers/grass is still missing there.
Otie, you have so much inside knowledge, do you maybe know anything about when we can expect some more trees, especially in the north-eastern part?

They are going to rebuild the whole area by segments, they need to finish first with the HVAC over the PATH hall in order to remove the temporary exhaust vents. I don't think it's a good move to plant trees during winter, these swamp oak trees seem to require special care.

Awesome find, Otie. No obvious Sandy flood damage is visible to me, which is very good. These show the open hole in the roof:

Most of the damages were done to electrical circuits and partially to some electrical rooms. It was crucial to accelerate dewatering process in order to prevent further damage to the artifacts (salt water can be really dangerous). Lower sheetrocks at some areas needed to be replaced as well.

I found the brochure I got when I visited the 9/11 memorial back in March during the week I spent in NYC for my High School orchestra's performance in Carnegie Hall, I'll try and get some professional scans of it and get them posted here ASAP. unfortunatly the ticket stub I received when we visited the memorial doesn't see, to have made it back to Indiana XD oh well, I guess that's more my loss than yours.

I've been looking at the site for months now, and have never figured something out. What are the two structures in the memorial by the highway? I assume they house utilities for the memorial and maybe bathrooms? But I'm not 100% certain. Does anyone know what they are used for?

Did they just plant new trees by 4WTC, or have those been there? I'm talking about the ones on the under construction side of the temporary memorial fence that are surrounded by the orange plastic nets.

The trees have been there for quite a while. But at the moment there is some activity close to them, seems like they finish this part of the plaza in the southeastern corner, although rather slowly. This cam gives the best view on it: http://archives.earthcam.com/archive...mpr/gzmpr2.jpg
