Tharoor stresses need for integrated education
Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor has stressed the need for integrated education for the comprehensive development of students. Inaugurating the 49th annual day celebrations of the Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom, on Saturday, Dr. Tharoor pointed out that what was being tested in the pen-paper examination was only a snapshot of the intellectual performance of the students at a particular point of time. Development Students must gain integrated education for their all-round development and this must include cultural programmes, he said. While teaching the ingredients of the curriculum was important, value education was equally significant, he added. Education Act The Minister said the provisions in the Right to Education Act allowed 25 per cent of the seats in Class One to children who belong to the underprivileged and economically backward sections of society. This provision of the Act would go a long way in bringing into the educational mainstream children from the underprivileged sections of society. Quality education The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan (KVS) too has been playing a major role in ensuring quality education for children from all strata of society, he said. K. Muralidharan, MLA; B.S. Valsala Nair, Principal, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom; Sreenath Shastri, Assistant General Manager, State Bank of India (SBI); and Murukesan, Corporation ward councillor, also addressed the gathering. |

Agriculture department plans centre for testing hi-tech farm technologies
The Department of Agriculture is setting up a Centre of Advanced Training in hi-tech Agriculture (CATHA) in the capital which will ‘test and refine’ hi-tech farming technologies. The centre, which has been given administrative sanction by the government, is one of the major projects envisaged by the department in its last budget. It will come up adjacent to SAMETI (State Agriculture Management and Extension Training Institute) at Venpalavattom as a subsidiary training institute. But unlike SAMETI, the focus would be on technology transfer. “It will be a knowledge hub for anyone interested in agriculture, be it farmers, scientists or agri-students. It will provide hands-on training for farmers in hi-tech farming. Awareness on new agricultural technologies and demonstrations would be part of CATHA,” said director of Agriculture, R Ajithkumar. It will be a one-stop-centre to know about the farm trends, market, machinery and other e-facilities associated with agriculture. The centre would set up demonstration units of hi- tech farming like the one on precision farming currently being planned by the department. Farmers could drop in with their queries and get technological support from a consultation centre which will be set up here. Plans are to develop CATHA as an e-Agriculture centre, officials said. According to them, the idea is to set up forecasting techniques that could save various crops, put up computer controlled polyhouses, a digitised library where farmers could get in touch with national and international farming trends and also to display most modern agricultural equipment and machinery. A hostel for agricultural students is also being planned here. The State Govt has entrusted SAMETI with the setting up of the centre and Ajithkumar, who is presently the in-charge director of SAMETI, said that `5 cr has been allotted this fiscal for the setting up of CATHA. Yes, any organisation is only as good as the people it has. However transferring institutions set up by the state government to centre is, in my view, still welcome.
1. Centre has better ability to fund the organisation. 2. Central organizations are better administered than state 3. Over a period of time, let’s hope (or pray?) the quality of manpower will improve 4. Lastly, specifically with respect to such institutions in Trivandrum, one can probably have a fair assurance that they will remain relatively free from dislodgment threats. |
