In my honest opinion, for the convenience of the general public, we should have a high court bench, an international airport and a high speed rail station in each district

I thought the idea of high court bench was because the administrative headquarters was in TVPM.

Trivandrum is the State Capital, this is why a HC Bench, if not the HC itself, should be co-located here. Period.

City police seeks help from BrahMos to curb drag race menace

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: City police has decided to seek the help of government agencies to curb the drag racing menace rampant on the Chakkai-Shanghumugham Road. The plan is to get these agencies to sponsor the closed circuit cameras to be installed along the stretch.

As the first step, police have approached BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Limited (BATL), which is located in the area.

"We have forwarded a request to the BATL authorities asking them to consider installing CCTV cameras along their compound wall so that it would help us identify over speeding vehicles," said K S Vimal, assistant commissioner, Shangumugham police sub division, confirming the move. He added that they were forced to make this move as the coastal road does not come under the existing surveillance camera network of the city police.

The decision came after a 19-year-old was killed in a freak accident at Chakkai on Sunday night. According to residents the youth, identified as Vipin, was racing with two other motor bike riders when the accident occurred. The two other motorists fled the scene without even stopping their bikes. Police are still clueless about their whereabouts.

P Niyas, circle inspector, city traffic north, said that though the police are yet to confirm if the case was of illegal drag racing, there was no doubt that the youth was riding over the stipulated speed limit.

"The riders have now shifted their activities during the night to avoid police interference on roads," he said.

City police commissioner T J Jose said that the department has no fund to install more cameras immediately and hence they are seeking the help of government agencies like BATL. "At present the city is equipped with 190 surveillance cameras of the police at major locations in the city, which were installed in three phases. The work for the third phase was just completed recently, so we cannot bring in more cameras soon," he said.

Kashmir to get e-toilets

Kerala's own electronic toilets (e-toilets), one of the prominent innovations of the state in public health, hygiene and sanitation sector, would now be set up in Kashmir. A 2.5 ton container loaded with the e-toilet and STP components would be leaving from Thiruvananthapuram to JK on Monday.

Pioneered by Eram Scientific Solutions, the Thiruvananthapuram based scientific R&D firm, the e-toilets for JK region have been customized as per the region's own geographical and sub-zero climatic conditions in response to J&Ks Tourism Department’s request for setting up e-toilets in the State.
The e-toilets would be set up at Affarwat and Gulmarg. Affarwat is one of the world's highest locations which uses cable car using gondolas at a height of over 4000 ft above sea level and the only one location in the world that takes skiers to a height of 4,390 metres.
In addition to the e-toilets, specifically designed STPs (Sewage Treatment Plants) would also be set up at Dal Lake to address its waste treatment woes.
Eram Scientific has designed customized e-toilets which can function in sub-zero temperatures, even at minus 55 Degrees Celsius. In order to function at this sort of extreme cold temperatures, military grade equipments have been used in the customized e-toilet model.
Eram Scientific has successfully implemented over 400 e-toilets in various parts of the country.

KEPCO to open poultry processing plant in city

One of the biggest hi-tech meat processing plants in South India is coming up in the district.

Kudappanakkunnu will soon be home to a state-of-the-art poultry meat processing plant which will have the capacity to process 16,000 chickens a day.
The fully-automatic, zero-waste facility is a project of the state government-undertaking Kerala State Poultry Development Corporation (KEPCO) and will come up on the KEPCO land at Kudappanakkunnu which already houses its poultry farms.

Tenders will be floated for the construction of the Rs 3.5-crore, 8,000 square feet facility this week, KEPCO managing director V Sunil Kumar said. ‘’The plant will be able to process 8,000 birds in two shifts every day. Every bird that goes into the plant will come out as an edible chicken product. The plant will have an in-built meat rendering plant as well as freezer facilities,’’ he said.

The advantage of the plant is that no part of a chicken will be allowed to go to waste. Waste products, including intestines and bones, will be converted into pet food and sold. ‘’It will be a no-waste, no-pollution setup,’’ KEPCO chairman K Padmakumar said.

KEPCO has decided to set up the plant in view of the increased demand for chicken and chicken products in the state. KEPCO figures also show that the chicken population in the state has grown from 75.44 lakh in 2006-07 to 90 lakh in 2010-11. ‘’We are in the process of increasing the number of KEPCO hatcheries and integrated poultry farms across the state,’’ Padmakumar said.

12.45 hours for TVC-MAS run, not bad…Now cars can do it within 10-12 hours through the North South Corridor.

Now most modes of connection to Trivandrum shifting to the route via TN as it is a faster connectivity. Good to experience it. We need to get the last mile connectivity (Kaval Kinar-Kovalam)also done fast. Gateway to Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Last Onam, I had reached TVM from BLR in 10-11 hours in my Skoda. During Deepavali, I was in my Tata Indica and via Palakkad, Ernakulam, it took 19 hours to reach TVM. (Inlcuding extended breaks at Palakkad/EKM, half an hour for a tyre burst at Palakkad and 45 minutes of new tyre buying and changing at EKM). I had started at around 4 am and reached by 11.30 pm. One of our fellow forumer had started at the same time from Bangalore and reached TVM at 3 pm!!

Hope TVM had a Duranto/Shatabdi to Bangalore too, which is the need of the hour & better if it run via Madurai. Perhaps a stop can be given at Madurai/Salem for passengers from TN.
