Berlin Tempelhof (Closed 2008)
Last week i had the opportunity to take a guided tour at Berlin Tempelhof airport by night.
The airport was in service from 1923 to 2008, the construction of the actual complex was started by the nazi´s in 1934, at the end of WWII it was completed for about 80 percent. After the war it was in use as us air force base and civil aiport. The main building was once among the top 20 largest buildings on earth, planning architect was Ernst Sagebiel Here is an outtake of some pictures from my Gallery. ![]() General Aviation Terminal ![]() Ghost corridors ![]() Check-in / Arrival Hall ![]() No signs of closure on the first look ![]() USAF basketball field For more impressions, please feel free to visit my Album. Have a nice day and thanks for watching, Markus

The airports shape is the same as the Nazi state emblem. I wonder how they might have expanded that if they took over Europe and all...

They planned to build a new and even bigger airport not too far away from the location, where now the new Berlin Schoenefeld airport (BBI/BER) is being built.(Thats not a joke!!!) I guess they would not have extended Tempelhof at all. Maybe they would have kept it as "government airport"

unfortunately i dont have a scanner at home so i made pictures with my iphone in bad light conditions :-(
http://imageshack.us/f/404/img1767nr.jpg on the top of the picture you can see the so called new "südbahnhof" or new south station , on the bottom the "Terminal" of the new "Suedflughafen" or "Southairport". The airfield itself would have been south of the Terminal. As you can see, , the Terminal would have been right next to the Autobahn-Ring , next to the rangsdorfer see. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=rangs...r+see&t=h&z=13 "Suedstadt" or translated "Southern-Area/Southern-Town" is the whole southern extension of the germania planning beyond what is today the S-Bahn ring in Berlin .... So everything the southern part of the S-Bahn Ring and the Autobahnring

![]() this is an aerial perspective of the plan. Airport and airfield of the "suedflughafen" , which was supposed to be larger than Tempelhof, can be seen on the bottom..(even though it does not really look like an airport on the first glimpse--its clearly defined as the airport facilyty and office buildings in the masterplan posted earlier)

I think the closure was part of a contract with the citizens... Tegel and Tempelhof airports will be closed for focussing air traffic at the new BER Berlin Brandenburg Airport outside the city limits.....

Anyways, here is my version of their "new" airport. Would feature underground parking, restaurants, hotels, stores, lounges, underground rail to the city center, etc. Would also have 4 extra expansion plots in between the runways. Might be a bit off scale in some areas, but you get the point.

Answer why Tempelhof was closed:
There is a contract that says that the new airport Berlin Brandenburg will be the only airport for Berlin and Brandenburg district for traffic with big birds. The licence to run Tegel aiport will expire half a year after opening the new airport. Tempelhof was closed because of safety concerns. Adjecent buildings are very close to the runways and in short final. But most of all: There was enough space at Tegel and Schönefeld for the low traffic in Tempelhof, the city had to run two instead of three airports. |

I saw a render once of the tempelhof airfield with swatstika runways someplace... Thats where I got the idea. And Denver Airport is really creepy, massive underground rooms, gas chambers? Really strange.
