Earthspace
JHM Intl, 115acres, mixed use
Bhatpore, Surat. (nr Gujarat Hira Bourse) link

Quote:
JHM International has various real estate holdings in India and commissioned HCP to master-plan their 115 acre parcel in Surat. The development, Eathspace, includes education, hospitality, commercial, retail, healthcare and residential uses. The key aspect while conceptualizing was flexibility in planning to accommodate the changes in program resulting from market forces. The first clues were taken from the site: the turn in the road established the axis of vision and subsequent proposal of a landmark building as the culmination point; the existing roads on three sides were used for direct excess to activities along the periphery; and the little pond give rise to the large consolidated open space, Greenway, with water body within it. This greenway is central to the master plan and used to segregate the Residential and Institutional from the Retail and Commercial. The development can easily be phased as required.

Gopi Talav to get a new avatar next year

Quote:
SURAT: The new avatar of 15th century ancient structure Gopi Talav - built by Malek Gopi, a Suba of Mughal Sultanate in the middle of the city - will be unveiled for the people in 2013.

After hitting obstacles related to rehabilitation of slum dwellers that led to a delay of nearly four years, the Rs 22 crore renovation project for the historical lake in Gopipura area of the city is now 80 per cent complete. Once completed, Surtis will be able to feel the nostalgia of history, heritage and modern amenities blended together in the only open space available in the old city.

"We planned this to recognize our heritage and history and provide an outlet to people for entertainment," state minister and the local MLA Ranjit Gilitwala said. "Now, honest efforts are being made to complete the project by 2013 so that people are not deprived of what they should have had a few years ago," he added.

Under this project, 90,000 sq metre of land is being redeveloped of which lake portion will consist of 35,000 sq metre, wherein the diametre of the lake will be 212 metre.

Seven zones will be developed around the lake classified as Surat nu Jaman, communal harmony, environment, textile, history, future and diamond zones.

In-charge executive engineer of SMC D R Gohil said, "Most of the civil work is over. Presently, landscaping, garden and electrification work is underway."

Retrofitting of old stepwell or vav is also being carried out. "Construction of outer wall, amphitheatre and jetty along with levelling of the ground and roadside compound wall is over now," assistant engineer Viresh Nanavati said.

An architect of urban initiatives Vishal Shah, who has designed the project, said, "Keeping the historic perspective in mind we have planned the development on thematic and operational basis. Each zone will have a different theme that will glorify the different aspects of the city and will be imbibed in such a way that a visitor will take away something from there. It is not just entertainment, but infotainment."

SURAT: The Diamond City will no longer be a business centre without a world-class convention centre to cater to its business needs. A state-of-the-art project, Tourism Development Centre (TDC), worth Rs 922 crore is coming up on more than 4 lakh square metres of land on the riverbank in Dumas area just 3 km from Surat airport. It would be located 10 km from the city centre and 4 km from the sea. Despite being one of the fastest developing cities of the world, Surat lacks world-class business and tourism facility. It has just one convention centre and one five star hotel to cater to a population of 46.82 lakh and their business requirement. It is being envisaged that the TDC project will help the city attract more business and investment and place it prominently on the world business destination map. Sources said that the completion of this project will be in five years and its execution will start in a few months. The TDC is designed and planned to be ecologically sustainable. It will have a full 18-hole golf course that is being designed by British designer David Hemcock. "While touring around the world and looking at the facilities in developed countries, we thought why can't we provide same ambience and facilities to match them in our city. We knew that it would not be possible without the help of the government. The government has helped us as we signed an MoU with them in the last Vibrant Gujarat summit. Now with all the approvals granted, we are ready to make a dream come true," said Dilip Ravani of Ravani infrastructure. Bharat Doshi, who is developing the project said, "Along with business we plan to provide a big recreational outlet to the locals. The entire facility is being developed as a green project." Surat collector Jayprakash Shivhare told TOI that the final go-ahead would be given soon for the project. He said, "After elections we are expediting all the pending work. This project will be a good thing for the city."

Riding the wave in Tapi

Quote:
SURAT: The countdown for a new recreational facility for the residents in the diamond city has begun. The much-awaited water sports activity in the upstream of weir-cum-causeway is all set to be inaugurated by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) next week. This is the first of its kind recreational facility to be set up by SMC for the 45 lakh population of the city.

Sources said the civic body is planning to inaugurate the water sports facility on January 18 at the hands of chief minister Narendra Modi. He is scheduled to visit the diamond city to launch the sports festival - Khel Mahakumbh.

The water sports activity has been planned in two phases. In the first phase, the contractor would start speed boating, jet skiing and low-cost boat ride. The second phase would see water rafting, wind surfing, para-sailing and kayaking.

The civic body had initiated the water sports project in the upstream of Tapi river at weir-cum-causeway at Rander in 2009 as the diamond city lacks entertainment and leisure activities.

Earlier, a Mumbai-based aquatic sports company was hired to start water sports in the three kilometre radius at weir-cum-causeway. But due to some technical and other problems, the agency failed and was blacklisted.

Few months ago, SMC invited fresh offers through re-tendering wherein about seven interested parties submitted their offers. Finally, the city-based Goldi Sports was selected as its bid was lowest.

Ketan Patel, additional city engineer and head of the water sports project, told TOI, "We intend to start water sport activity in the upstream of Tapi river next week."

"In all, there would be 12 water sports which would include speed boating, surfing, water skiing and parasailing," he said.

Surat Municipal Corporation to inaugurate rooftop solar plant

Surat Municipal Corporation to inaugurate rooftop solar plant

Quote:
SURAT : With the installation of the rooftop solar power plant at the Science Centre in City Light nearing completion, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is planning to inaugurate during the upcoming visit of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in the city next week.

Official sources said the civic body has installed rooftop solar power plant at the cost of Rs 91.80 lakh at the Science Centre for generating 100 kilowatts solar energy. A private agency has been hired for the installation of the first the solar power plant.

The civic body plans to meeting at least 15-30 per cent of its energy requirement from renewable which including solar and wind. It is already having a 3MW wind plant installed at Porbander and has decided to extend it by calling tenders for 8.4MW wind power station at the cost of Rs 63 crore.

Sources said the power produced will be sold to Torrent Power and that the sum generated will be credit to its power bills.

Initially, the civic body was planning for 50 and 25 KW rooftop solar plants, but since it was to be connected to grid, hence 100KW single plant was found more viable. It was concluded that with the increasing heat levels, solar panels will prove to be beneficial deal for the civic body in the long run. om the last one year the civic body has been mooting the installation of Solar panels for its vital and important buildings.

"The solar power plant atop Science Centre is expected to generate about 1.14 lakh kilowatts solar power per annum worth Rs 17.03 lakh. The solar power will be transferred in the grid and that the sum generated will be credited to the civic body's annual power bill" said Jatin Shah, city engineer.

Civic body to intensify zero slum city campaign

Quote:
SURAT: As a part for intensifying its zero slum city campaign, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to re locate nearly 15,000 slum dwellers, especially living on the banks of the creeks passing through the city in coming few months.

SMC is running a Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban renewal Mission (JnNURM) scheme under which it has targeted to build 50,000 economically weaker section (EWS) houses in different parts of the city. It has already built more than 30,000 homes and has rehabilitated nearly 20,000 families.

8,000 more such EWS quarters are likely to be ready in two months time. "We have decided to re locate nearly 15,000 hutments to EWS houses in coming months. We are giving priority to hut settlements on the banks of different creeks passing through the city as we are in the process of developing BRTS route called canal corridor for mass transportation," Said Manoj Das, Municipal Commissioner of SMC.

The re habilitation of the slum dwellers is mainly taking place at Kosad and Behstan where large number of quarters are already built.
