if there's anything worth hoping for, i'd hope to see a similar picture 20 years
from now. most probably, i won't be in it anymore. but cebu will always be
there and better. and cathay pacific, i am confident, will always be a partner
in its future.

cheers to cathay pacific. cheers to all of us.

Dili pwede even if traffic demands it. Bilateral air agreements prevents it.

Which bilateral air agreement holds when Cathay Pacific planes fly from the Philippines and the destination is either Canada or the US?

CP is based in Hongkong and if I'm correct, HK has bilateral agreements with those destination countries. My understanding with these agreements is that those inking these types agreement only uses "reciprocity" as their binding phrase.

Both the Hong Kong-Philippines and Hong Kong-Canada/US bilateral dictate rights for Hong Kong carriers to fly to the final destination, and in particular those who wish to fly via the Philippines to that final destination. I'm not sure what the bilateral contains, but if there are no fifth-freedom rights granted in the bilateral, CX can't just start flights from HKG via MNL or CEB to a third destination.

(I'm not sure if the Philippines-Canada/US bilateral plays a role as well, but it might.)

CP is based in Hongkong and if I'm correct, HK has bilateral agreements with those destination countries. My understanding with these agreements is that those inking these types agreement only uses "reciprocity" as their binding phrase.
Simple logic, if we want CX to fly Cebu-LA non-stop, will China allow PAL to fly HK-Vancouver-Las Vegas. Air agreements are tough negotiations but can happen if the host countries allow it. Example, when PAL shutdown way back 90s. We saw Cathay fly Manila Davao.

Ahhh, your frame of mind was set on PAL. I get it.

I was thinking only of the possibility of more direct flights from the Philippines to either US or Canada.

Yes of course, its all give and take. Even Harper took a while to cede for PAL to fly Toronto and that was quite timed on his visit, well you know, there's a big Canadian interest in our geo-resources and its called TVI. If only things were fine, I would love seeing PAL fly to the West and East Coast direct from Cebu!
