Presented the concept of Italian Pavilion at EXPO 2015 at the Workshop “Disegnare l’Italia”


Presented today the concept of the Italian Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015 at Triennale in Milano throughout the workshop “Disegnare l’Italia”. The meeting was opened by Roberto Robert Formigoni, General Commissioner for Expo Milano 2015, Giuliano Pisapia, Special Commissioner for Italian Government for Expo Milano 2015, Paolo Peluffo, Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Claudio De Albertis, President of Triennale and it carried on with the speeches of Giuseppe Sala, CEO of Expo 2015 SpA, Diana Bracco, General Commissioner of Padiglione Italia and President of Expo 2015 SpA, and Marco Balich.

The Italian creative mind, considered one of the most important event organizers all over the world, took up the challenge to develop the concept for Padiglione Italia in order to decline the Expo theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. “We decided to launch a contest, European wide, for the design of Italian Pavilion, situated along Cardo”, stated Diana Bracco, “that’s why we organized this meeting to tell to the Country the concept at the base of the contest. We intend to offer high quality contents to touch visitors”.

Italian Pavilion will be a place which will offer to visitors an emotional journey through Italy. It is the only place able to sum up history, values, products and technological excellences. It is the Country that boasts an extraordinary artistic, landscape, culinary treasure of different and unique territorial traditions that are part of the Italian style, appreciated worldwide. “That’s why – added Mrs. Bracco – we intend that our Pavillion, developed along Cardo, will be a showcase of Italy System and, at the same time, a bridge between Italian excellences and those of the rest of the world. The greatest events looked after by Marco Balich throughout the years in Italy and abroad, are distinguished by combining values and contents with emotions and feelings. For his great communication skills, I believe he is the right person to fulfill this task”.

“Today – explained Giuseppe Sala, CEO of Expo 2015 SpA – is an important day for Expo Milano 2015. This morning China signed the participation contract. Now we are presenting the Padiglione Italia which is the demonstration of our Country effort to face the challenge of “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. These happenings are milestones in the path towards 2015 and strengthen the international relations with the Participants thanks to who we will organized the Universal Exposition of the Third Millennium. The Pavilion allows visitors to touch the excellences of Italian creativity, tradition and innovation. In Shanghai, our Country demonstrated successfully its skills.”

Marco Balich is proud of the appointment: “I’m glad that my ideas will be the cue for the design of Padiglione Italia. I’m thankful to Diana Bracco and Expo 2015 for trusting me. I’m hopeful that Expo Milano 2015 will be the signal of the Italian change worldwide. Italian Pavillion will be an exclusive showcase of Italy in occasion of a unique occasion of development and dialogue with the rest of the world”.

Marco Balich is one of the most important names in the organization of events and Olympics opening ceremonies (Master of Cerimonies) worldwide. At the end of 2011, he won the international contest for the organization of Rio 2016 Olympics. His career started in 2002 as Flag Handover Project Leader for the closing ceremony in Salt Lake City and in 2006 he became Creative Director and Executive Producer of Olympics Ceremonies in Turin, thanks to which he won two Emmy Awards.

Press conference for the presentation of the first pavilion of Expo2015 Milano, the Swiss Pavilion. Here are the highlights:





Confooderatio Helvetica: the Swiss pavilion at Expo Milano 2015

On 24th May 2012 Switzerland showed its pavilion for the Universal Exposition of Milano at Centro Svizzero in Milan. The project, called Confooderatio Helvetica, was chosen by a jury among 103 proposals in the international competition promoted by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. The outgoing General Commissioner for Switzerland at Expo Milano 2015, Mr Roberto Balzaretti, introduced the project with the Ambassador Dante Martinelli who will take his place as Commissioner. Mr Martinelli emphasized the relevance of Expo Milano 2015 for the development and the strengthening in the relations between the two countries. The General Commissioner of Expo Milano 2015, Mr Roberto Formigoni, the Special Commissioner of the Italian Government for Expo Milano 2015, Mr Giuliano Pisapia, and the CEO of Expo 2015 Company, Mr Giuseppe Sala underlined the importance of the partnership with the Switzerland for the realization of the Universal Exposition.

On the 16th May the Swiss Government planned, for the participation to Expo Milano 2015, a budget of 23.1 billion CHF of which 8 billion will have to be sponsored. To this aim, the Swiss Government has already received important confirmations. The cantons of Ticino, Graubünden, Valais and Uri and the cities of Basel, Geneva and Zurich have ensured their participation to the Swiss pavilion. Some companies are indeed interested in the sponsorship but they are waiting for the definitive approval of the budget by the Government.

For Switzerland, the Universal Exposition of Milan is strategic for its geographical, cultural and economic nearness to Italy. Moreover, the participation to the 2015 event will be an important occasion to introduce the cultural and landscape variety of the Switzerland, its excellence in research and innovation and its economic potential.


The Swiss pavilion

On the 19th August 2011 the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs announced a competition aimed to find out the best thematic idea for the Swiss pavilion. Among the 103 proposals, on 20th January 2012 a jury chose the project Confooderatio Helvetica designed by netwerch GmBH in Brugg. The project is focused on the supply and distribution of food worldwide in order to invite visitors thinking over their consumer behavior.

The realization of the project will start in 2013 and involve the authors and the federal offices (DSC, UFSP, UFAE, SECO, Switzerland Office etc.). The Swiss pavilion will be situated near the Italian one: it will cover an area of 4433 square meters and it will host a restaurant, exhibition zones for the partners and the sponsors, and a sales point.


Towards Expo Milano 2015

Switzerland has planned a collateral program “Towards Expo Milano 2015” that will be held from 2013 to 2016. The program is aimed to strengthen the relations with Italy and to promote the image of Switzerland among Italians.


The new General Commissioner

The Swiss Government has nominated the Ambassador, Mr. Dante Martinelli, as General Commissioner for Switzerland at Expo Milano 2015. He will be the representative of Switzerland for the Expo organizers and the Italian authorities. He takes the place of Mr. Roberto Balzaretti, Swiss Ambassador in Bruxelles. The Swiss Government thanks Mr. Balzaretti for the excellent job done in these years.

Children Park between games and good habits


The Reggio Emilia world famous educational strategy inspire the thematic area dedicated to children and families

The educational strategy at the base of Children Park, an area dedicated to children and families at the site of Expo Milano 2015, is the heart of the collaboration signed by Expo 2015 SpA and the Istituzione Scuole e Nidi di Infanzia of the Reggio Emilia Municipality (the Reggio Emilia Institute of Kindergarten and Elementary School) on November 27th. A place of play and knowledge, Children Park will offer a moment of relax and fun for all those who visit the Universal Exhibition in Milan. On its paths the children and their families will learn healthy lifestyles and good eating habits.

The Park and its theme is of the utmost importance for the Universal Exhibition, therefore Expo 2015 SpA has decided to start a collaboration with cultural institutions and government whose excellence in the educational philosophy is recognized throughout the world. Hence the agreement with Reggio Emilia, a city of great tradition in education, known for having developed the "Reggio Emilia Approach", and educational method appreciated and applied all over the world, from China to the United States.

This cooperation, signed by the CEO of Expo 2015 SpA Giuseppe Sala and the President of the Istituzione Scuole e Nidi di Infanzia of the Reggio Emilia Municipality, goes in this direction.

To develop the project of the Children Park, Reggio Emilia will provide its expertise in the pedagogical and educational systems and the skills acquired in design and communication. Reggio Emilia and its educational approach will be alongside the Expo Milano 2015 during events and international meetings related to the family and the children’s education issues.

Supported by a worldwide network of experts and researchers, the Reggio Emilia Institute of Kindergarten and Elementary School will give added value to the agreement with the Milan World Expo. The purpose is to define routes and occasions of game that will enhance the theme and the principles of the Universal Exhibition. The new generations, thanks to the discoveries and adventures of the Children Park, will become more aware of the great challenges of food and the availability of resources with which humanity must face.

Despite Controversy, Herzog & de Meuron’s Porta Volta Breaks Ground



After two years in waiting, Porta Volta, the project by Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron to redevelop Milan’s north-western Spanish gate, has finally broken ground. The project, which spurred some controversy when architect and critic Vittorio Gregotti accused the Swiss-led project of being an act of “architectural colonialism,” is nevertheless scheduled to be completed in 2015.

According to Herzog, the 2,500 sqm project, which consists of Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli’s 7,500 sqm Headquarters and 15,000 sqm of greenery, is “intrinsically” Milanese, having been inspired by “the Gothic tradition that is expressed in important buildings in the city of Milan [and the] farms that dot the landscape of slender Lombardy.”
