SA was very advanced in the past, perhaps as advanced as Australia in the 70's, it went through a ten year stagnation in the 80's, with GDP growth of <1%. Thus the country's economy was in recovery mode for a long time. GDP per capita has just recently passed its past peak. The primary reason though for the persistent unemployment has been a weak educational system and a very tight (highly regulated) labour market. Growth is far from saturated, there are still massive reserves of minerals that are being discovered esp in the North, massive coal mines still being developed in the East, lots of potential in the renewable energy sectors and of course massive reserves of shale gas have been discovered in the Karoo. LAstly there are great opportunities to export manufactured goods for the boooming African economy.

I believe South Africa has the potential of being the wealthiest country in the world if it is managed the right way

That's the most shallow, naive and unsubstantiated comment I've heard in a while. South Africa's problem is NOT potential, it's leadership and governance. Should the right government come along and education be boosted significantly along with sound, stable economic policy that balances a developmental, reformist agenda with sound, business-friendly principals, South Africa will fly. Switzerland and Holland simply DO NOT have the resources that South Africa has and has reached the pinnacle of it's economic growth potential with a stagnant, ageing population, Eurozone pressures and in Holland's case, the horrific specter of climate change. South Africa, if the leadership can tap into it, has the most rapidly growing continent on its doorstep. The reason its growth is sluggish in comparison is poorly articulated policy and leadership, something that can be changed at the ballot box. Those countries you speak of have geographical issues constraining their growth... you can't simply change that. Anyways, back to skylines. |

Maputo
image hosted on flickr ![]() By shirleyandmick image hosted on flickr ![]() By aimoo4 Don't know if these photos have been used but I'll post them anyway. Just love the first overhead shot which shows the Maputo landscape like I'd never seen it before.

Maputo looking quite dense there...but plainly needs some TLC, even from a distance...
That shot of Strand is one of the best yet though, Lydon! And it doesn't even have the other two new towers in it...
