Really though, a building of such resplendent beauty as 'The Ark' deserves a similarly Titianesque scale in photo.

Saying the Emirates Arena looks like The Arc is akin to saying every yellow block building (including stone) in Glasgow looks like the Campanile Hotel at the SECC. It's disappointing if that is the level of analysis that we've reached on here.

I don't think thats fair. I initially made the comment as a joke, but the more I studied the pictures of Cally, the more I'm convinced the Emirates looks like an offcut from the architects drawing board.

If you look at the building at the back with the circular glass windows, it has a grey overhand panel running the length of the building in a very similar manner to the Emirates. The cladding on the Arc looks like it may be the exact same as that used in the velodrome and finally, the building on the far left of the Caledonian picture has floor-to-ceiling glass wraparound - a more angular version of the floor-to-ceiling glass wraparound at the Emirates. It's a variation on a theme - and, much like Cally, this insides are actually rather good as functional buildings go (The Saltire is excellent as are the leisure facilities).

I think it is a more than valid critique to say that these buildings are stylistically similar and arguably both have the same aesthetic failings.

The Caledonian campus on a grey or wet day (which is most days) is cold barren and miserable. The same mistake has been made with the Emirates IMO.

I'm concisous that I'm starting to sound overly defensive but it's something I feel strongly about. All over the city dross is being flung up all over the place, using sub-standard materials. Finally we get an example which uses high quality materials yet it is compared to a run of the mill tin shed.

I accept that you don't appreciate the building but I can't possibly accept comparison of the cladding with the Arc. Your comment that it might be the "exact same cladding", is that based on looking at pictures or comparing both in person?

You have to understand that it'll be not 100% of copy ARC but show to other people, they will say, yes, there is big similarity between two projects.

I respect the fact that you love the building, but you must concede it was always going to be divisive.

Regarding the cladding, i'm an uninformed layman, but they look remarkably similar in the photos. Can you demonstrate that they are actually materially different? Does it actually even matter from an aesthetic point of view? 99.9% of the general public would probably think the same materials had been used.

Glasgow 2014 to create over 1000 creative sector jobs and opportunities

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond recently revealed that Sunset+Vine, in association with Global Television (SVGTV) have been awarded the host broadcaster contract for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The two independent television production companies, in their first joint venture as SVGTV, are set to broadcast the Commonwealth Games to a potential worldwide audience of over one billion people.

Glasgow 2014 will be Global Television's third consecutive Commonwealth Games after the Australian-based company worked on Melbourne 2006 and Delhi 2010.

Glasgow 2014 chairman Lord Smith said the contract is a significant milestone in Scotland’s journey to the Games, and will take the Games to the world.

The appointment of SVGTV is also set to boost to Scotland's creative sector, creating over 1,000 job opportunities and training placements for young broadcasters, and the First Minister said the deal will be of huge benefit to the country.

The announcement of the host broadcaster marks the largest contract that Glasgow 2014 will enter into, allowing the showcasing of Scotland's Commonwealth Games to a potential audience of more than a billion people worldwide, he said.

Mr Salmond added that the agreement will not only mean an enormous contribution towards the successful delivery of the Games, but will give a huge boost to Scotland's creative industries.

At least 120 graduates from Scotland will work with the host broadcaster during the Games, creating a talent pool that will be highly sought-after when Scotland hosts other sporting events in years to come – not least of which will be the 2014 Ryder Cup.

SVGTV has revealed a new collaboration with universities and colleges that will create an education and training programme offering live broadcast, creative and technology skills.

SVGTV will open an office in Glasgow soon, and it will also manage the design, installation and operation of the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Companies interested in competing for upcoming opportunities at the Commonwealth Games are encouraged to register on the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Business Portal website

Ģ300,000 artwork planned for 2014 Commonwealth Games site#

A Ģ300,000 commission has been announced for a new public artwork that will act as a legacy of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The finished work, or works, will go on display in the vicinity of one of the main venues - the Emirates Arena - just before the games begin.

Interested artists should provide an expression of interest by 17 January.

Submissions will be considered by a judging panel before a shortlist of five artists is interviewed in May.

The project is being run by Velocity - a partnership between Glasgow Life, Glasgow City Council, Creative Scotland and Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration Company.

'Rebirth of communities'
Its aim is to link creative activity and local communities through a public art programme.

Councillor Archie Graham, chair of Glasgow Life and depute leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "The east end of Glasgow has been transformed in recent years.

"Now we are looking at how we can add to the rebirth of these communities, through the commission of a world-class artwork which will be a fitting and lasting legacy for the people of Glasgow.

"Glasgow and Scotland has some of the very best talent in creating contemporary visual art but, critically, they will be guided by the people of the east end, who are equally passionate about not only their communities, but how they should be represented."

The commission may result in a single artwork or a series of installations in the area around the Emirates Arena.

Ben Spencer, the producer of Velocity, added: "We are looking for a commission that will be bold and ambitious and helps to further reinforce Glasgow's reputation as an international leader in the arts.

"But more than that, we want this work to be part of a wider programme that helps to re-imagine, repair and reconnect an area of the city which has gone through years of disruption.

"Local people will be actively involved in the process, so that there is a sense of ownership and pride in the finished artwork."

Submissions of interest will be considered by a panel of judges comprising an artist or curator, a representative from Velocity's partner organisations and representatives from the local community.

The shortlist of five artists will be interviewed about their proposals in early May.

It is hoped the finished artwork will be unveiled in the months before the 2014 games.

Good incentive from the Local authorities, hope to see some artistc elements introduced in and around the arena areas and public realms spruced up from the boring bland status that they have so far.

Again i'm going back to Panning the huge blank Facades that shoud have exciting lighting schemes, etched glass icons, and of course the bland grey panels painted by Grafiti artists , i hope Sam Bates applies for this .

Lets hope for something inspiring and sleek rather than modern. I think a viewing platform looking over the city would be a good idea with a restaurant included.

A viewing platform with restaurant - on a budget of Ģ300,000? It would be an amazing achievement if it could be done.

It's a clever way of regenerating the area in the long term and making the area more attractive, which in turn could bring large private investment. The science centre tower isn't working, so lets build a new and bigger one, I think I maybe getting carried away here but.

This would be ideal as a replacement, for the location, where the scabby Camlachie towers are!
