Party will take strict action against fence-sitters: Gowda

Belgaum: Jolted by the resignation of Vijay Sankeshwar as MLC and apprehensions over B S Yeddyurappa loyalist MLAs deserting the BJP, former Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Tuesday said the party would take stern action against fence-sitters.

Sankeshwar is the first BJP legislator to resign his membership from Legislative Council to join Yeddyurappa‘s Karnataka Janata Party.

The Core Committee meeting of the BJP, to be held tomorrow in the city, is likely to serve showcause notice to 14 MLAs and seven MLCs who shared the dais with Yeddyurappa at the KJP rally in Haveri on 9 December.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Legislative Council session here, Gowda said senior BJP leader Ananthkumar would attend the Core Committee meeting to decide the fate of Yeddyurappa loyalists.

Replying to a query, Gowda admitted that the BJP delayed taking action against legislators loyal to Yeddyurappa as the party wanted to retain the rebel leader in the party.

“With Yeddyurappa leaving the party, there is no need for it to tolerate indiscipline anymore,” he added.

Asked whether action would be taken against BJP legislators loyal to rebel leader B Sriramulu, Gowda said the party would not discriminate and take disciplinary action against them.

Legislators including G Somashekara Reddy, Suresh Babu, B Nagendra, MPs J Shantha and Sanna Pakeerappa have been identified with the Badava Sramikara Raithara party.

Sankeshwar resigns as MLC, attacks RSS

After resigning as the member of the Legislative Council, businessman-pol*it*ician Vijay Sankeshwar of BJP on Tuesday made a scathing attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Addressing reporters in Hubli, Sankeshwar said the RSS was the real high command of the BJP in Karnataka and, the party had resorted to “Operation Lotus” on the instructions of RSS leaders.

Sankeshwar, who has identified himself with former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa’s Karnataka Janata Party, said the RSS was controlling the BJP in a “dictatorial” manner. Raising questions about the RSS’ finances, he said that he was repeatedly asking the RSS to be accountable to the public and disclose its financial dealings as it receives thousands of crores of rupees as donations.

“The RSS leaders say that they are not after money, power or publicity. But, it is not true. Though RSS is doing good work as a patriotic and Hindutva organisation, its attempts to control the BJP is not correct. Though I have been associated with the RSS for the past 52 years, I am not happy with its conduct during the past decade. RSS leaders extracted enough milk from milch cow G Janaradhana Reddy, mining baron and former minister,” he alleged.

Sankeshwar said that instead of engaging in “backdoor politics,” the RSS should indulge in direct politics. “I have not participated in any RSS activity in the last two years,” he added. The BJP leaders have no control over the RSS leaders such as Santosh and Satish who have been drafted for BJP work, he remarked.

In Belgaum, Legislative Council Chairperson D H Shankarmurthy informed the House on Tuesday that Sankeshwar’s resignation has been accepted. Sankeshwar was among the legislators who had attended the Karnataka Janata Party convention in Haveri on Sunday.

Resignation accepted

Governor H R Bhardwaj on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Valyapure. Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar had forwarded the resignation for acceptance, a communique from Raj Bhavan in Bangalore said. Valyapure, a staunch supporter of Yeddyurappa had quit the Cabinet on Saturday to express his solidarity with the former chief minister.

Valyapure also attended the Haveri convention. The strength of the Shettar-led BJP Cabinet has now come down to 32 from 34. B J Puttaswamy, another Yeddyurappa loyalist, was dropped from the Cabinet on Saturday for anti-party activities.

Party. Excerpts from an exclusive interview with HT.
Why are you so angry with BJP, when you were the one who helped bring it to power down South?
I was removed as CM not by the people or MLAs but by Ananth Kumar and other leaders who manipulated the party's so-called high command. I built the BJP from scratch. It is like ants building their home painstakingly and then, serpents and reptiles worming their way into their homes to get power.

Why do you suspect a conspiracy by BJP leaders?
Some people in Delhi have damaged my reputation. Even getting my name included in the Lokayukta report was part of their conspiracy to oust me. Even after the HC quashed the report, I was denied a chance to become CM again. They are enjoying power now.

What is your strategy?
I will tour intensively and focus beyond the so-called Lingayat belt to prove that I have the love of the Kannada people.

Would you rule out a post-poll pact with the BJP?
I will have nothing to do with the BJP, which I have quit after 40 years. There is no saffron colour in my party’s flag. I will not have anything to do with Deva Gowda's JD(S) either.

Some people say you have reached a secret understanding with the Congress?
I plan to win enough number of seats — at least 100 of the 224-member House – on my own. I have the love of millions of Kannadigas due to my policies as CM.

Regional parties usually never succeed. Will you fail like S Bangarappa (in Karnataka), and rebel BJP leaders Uma Bharti (MP) and Kalyan Singh (UP)?
The people of Karnataka have seen my work as CM. The time is ripe for a regional party like KJP. I will either be the king or kingmaker. No government can be formed without us.

Land acquisition near Suvarna Soudha stopped

Minister says 750 acres had been identified to build houses

Housing Minister V. Somanna said the State government had stopped the process of acquiring land for housing scheme in villages near the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha here.

Replying to a question from Veeranna Mathikatti during question hour in the Legislative Council on Tuesday, Mr. Somanna said the Karnataka Housing Board had identified 750 acres and 35 guntas of land at K.K. Koppa, Kondasakoppa and Khamkaratti villages near Suvarna Vidhana Soudha to build houses. The government had accorded approval to acquire the land at Rs. 10.80 lakh per acre when the market price was just around Rs. 3 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh. However, the price of land shot up after the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha was built. Hence, landowners had refused to part with their land, he said.

Green belt

Also, the government had declared a radius of 2.5 km around the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha as a green belt, to maintain the sanctity of the building, he added.

However, Mr. Mathikatti alleged that the government had dropped the process of land acquisition only to help real estate agents. He said the government should find proper ways to provide housing to beneficiaries in Belgaum.

Bus-stand

Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok said the government had sanctioned Rs. 25 crore to set up a bus-stand and a commercial complex in Belgaum, similar to the one being developed in Bangalore.

He said the proposals for setting up a commercial complex consisting of a bus-station and a depot at Hosur in Hubli at a cost of Rs. 36 crore and a similar one in Dharwad at a cost of Rs. 9 crore had been approved. Construction work on these projects would start soon, he added.

Generic drugs

Minister for Medical Education S.A. Ramdas denied that substandard generic drugs were being sold in Janatha Bazaar medical stores opened at a few hospitals in the State. Replying to Marithibbe Gowda, he said only branded drugs manufactured by top companies were being sold, he said.

earlier when vajapayee and advani was there nobody cared rss.. now there is no strong central leader in bjp, rss took over and meddles in every small decision of bjp. bjp is now not the same as it was for last 50 years... now it is much more conservative

yes lotus mall is planned for 10. so in 2014 you will hav 25 theaters . and all these multiplex are national and international brands. local theaters are not upgrading their theaters to multiplex standards they are keeping it as it is .or when they get a good offer they may sell their theaters to a builders to be demolished for a mall or for a highrise
