Chennai students to battle it out on track, with car models

Quote:
Chennai, Dec. 12:

Robotix Learning Solutions Pvt Ltd will host later this month an event where school students will battle it out on a racing track, albeit with working models of nitro powered and hydrogen fuelled green cars.

Thirty-seven teams, including seven all-girls teams, from city schools will participate in this auto technology challenge where they will be given imported kits and will need to build their own cars. The competition is open to students of the 11th class. Around 460 students participated in the test to qualify.

A.S. Ramana Prasad, Chairman of Robotix Learning, said experts from India and Singapore will train and guide students in a four-day workshop at the Bala Vidya Mandir school, Adyar, that will end on December 28. This will culminate in a one day grand finale the next day to be held at the KV IIT Madras campus. Vicky Chandok, a former racing driver himself, and President of the FMSCI, offered to take the winning team on a tour of the F1 circuit

Jayalalithaa moots Global Arts Festival in Chennai

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa presents the Sangita Kalanidhi M.S. Subbulakshmi Award to Sangita Kalanidhi, instituted by “The Hindu” to Trichur V. Ramachandran at the inauguration of the 86th Annual Conference and Concerts of the Music Academy in Chennai on Saturday. Looking on are N. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister promises Music Academy all help to organise the event in December

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday mooted the idea of the Music Academy organising a “Global Arts Festival” in Chennai in December and volunteered to offer her help.

“The December season of Chennai has all the features that qualify it to become a season of World Music and Dance Festival. I suggest that you may please sit together and plan for a December Global Art Festival at Chennai. You can count on me for my help and support,” she said, inaugurating the 86th Annual Conference and Concerts of the Music Academy here.

Ms. Jayalalithaa presented the Sangita Kalanidhi M.S. Subbulakshmi award, instituted by The Hindu, to vocalist and Sangita Kalanidhi-designate Trichur V. Ramachandran, who was elected president of the Annual Conference and Concerts of the Music Academy.

Describing Carnatic music as one of the best offerings of our culture and the essence of all musical experience, the Chief Minister said south India’s foremost legacy was its rich musical tradition and Carnatic music had seen the pinnacle of glory of 2,000 years of evolution.

“Today, it has achieved such perfection with intricate nuances of sruti, raga, bhava and sahitya that it may have very few parallels in the world of music,” she said, amidst enthusiastic response from the audience.

Ms. Jayalalithaa explained the antiquity and unique features of Tamil music with references found in Tholkappiam, the ancient treatise on grammar, and Tamil classic Silappathikaram.

“It contains mines of information on music, dance and various musical instruments,” she said and went on to explain the contribution by Alwars and Nayanmars towards enriching music.

“Alwars and Nayanmars sought infinite bliss through devotional love of a sublime kind and gave musical expression through their Prabhandams and Thiruppadhigams.”

Commending the Music Academy for nurturing and popularising Carnatic music, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the future belonged to younger musicians.

“They are our cultural ambassadors,” she said and advised them to do rigorous practice to sharpen their skills.

“Second homecoming”

Music Academy president N. Murali said it was a “second homecoming” for the Chief Minister, who first inaugurated the festival in 1991. Though she was invited in 2005, she had to cancel her participation due to unprecedented rain in Chennai as it required her personal monitoring of the situation.

He said Trichur Ramachandran was selected for the Sangita Kalanidhi award exactly 50 years after he gave his first concert in the Academy.

Mr. Murali said the Sadas on January 1, 2013 would be presided over by Justice V. Ramasubramanian of the Madras High Court. The Sangita Kalanidhi award would be presented that day.

Stressing the aspect of “listening” in music, Ramachandran said music students should listen to a number of concerts of senior and good artistes to create new and great styles with innovation, without deviating from the boundaries of tradition.

Sangita Kalanidhis R. Vedavalli and Trichy Sankaran, and Academy secretaries N. Ramji and K.V. Krishna Prasad participated.

Chennai hosts Jute Festival

Quote:
National Jute Board (NJB) is actively engaged in market development of jute products and as part of its promotional activity, a ‘jute festival’ is being organized at Chennai.

Nearly 35 jute entrepreneurs from different states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh etc. are showcasing their products like jute blended saris, jute tiles, floor coverings, wall hangings, jute handicrafts, various kinds of bags, home textiles, jute stationery articles, gift articles, footwear etc. Every evening a ‘jute fashion walk’ is also being organized as part of the expo.

Prerana Lifestyle of Thrissur, which is an SHG initiative, has a wide range of bags and folders which it claims to supply to many corporate customers. Jute Emporium has displayed an amazing collection of bags, clocks and time-pieces with jute dial, wall hangings and other decorative items.

Anakaputhur Jute Weaver Association has showcased an interesting variety of jute blended saris which are attracting the women folk. C. Sekar of the association says these jute saris are chic and more durable. Reliance Handloom Crafts of Warangal, AP manufactures jute durries of various sizes.

Favourites from Palladam has displayed jute floor coverings and tiles besides wall hangings and serving trays of varying sizes. Kiran Bag of Kolkata has a delightful range of jute footwear, which is light in weight.

The exhibition is attracting large crowds looking for eco-friendly and fashionable ethnic product range. Besides creating awareness on jute as an eco-friendly product, the exhibition is also attracting domestic entrepreneurs interested in diversifying their business activity.

Jute is one of the oldest sectors in India’s agricultural and industrial economy. India is the largest producer of raw jute and jute goods. Export performance of jute sector crossed US$ 383 million during 2011-12. This year’s target has been set at US$ 500 million. The exports included diversified products like jute floor coverings, wall hangings, decorative fabrics.

There are 83 composite jute mills in the country producing jute goods to the extent of 16 lakh metric tonnes. The industry is an agro-based and labor intensive, providing employment to about 2.48 lakh workers directly and indirectly.

The main advantage of jute lies in its eco-compatibility. Jute, the golden fibre, meets all the standards for ‘safe packaging in view of being a natural, renewable, biodegradable and eco-friendly product. As a natural fibre, it is finding greater acceptance as an environment friendly product since its contents are cellulose and lignin, which are biodegradable. With growing concern for environment and ecology, the global trend of opting for natural products in various sectors holds bright prospects for the jute industry.

National Jute Board (NJB) under the Union Ministry of Textiles has undertaken various programmes for promotion of jute. NJB represents the interests of growers, workers, producers and exporters. NJB also undertakes various measures for promotion of jute and jute products in the country as well as export markets abroad. The sustained efforts of NJB have resulted in increase of enterprises in the informal sector and consequently more employment.

Of confluences and contradictions

Quote:
Priyadarsini Govind thrives on challenges, loves ‘living on the edge,’ as she puts it. She seeks out some adventures and some just drop into her lap because of who she is. Just like the opportunity to helm the 32nd Natya Kala Conference. The annual event on Chennai’s cultural calendar that’s on from December 26 to 31, at Nalli Gana Vihar, T. Nagar, Chennai, once again will be the meeting point of theories, thoughts and themes.

Sitting cross-legged on the wooden floor of the large ‘dance’ room in her Mylapore residence, the poised Bharatanatyam dancer begins by saying, “I am absolutely delighted. This is something I have always wanted to do. And when I was told about being made convener, I was thrilled.”

This time, the Conference will deliberate on the concept ‘Samahit- When Parallels Meet.’ Over 50 artists from various streams of the arts, are expected to participate.

Elaborating on the concept, Priya says, “My sister Vidya, Leela Samson, Jayachandran from Kalakshetra and I were articulating various ideas. That’s when it occurred to me that when I work on a concept for my solos, I have to understand dance, music, poetry, movement and most important, how to communicate with my audience. A dancer is not insulated… she has to have a deep understanding of other disciplines as well. And that’s how the theme took shape in my mind; the influences that affect a dancer and her art. The broad theme is ‘Contradictions within’ and the parallels and influences which shape a dancer.”

Priya, who just added another feather to her creative cap when she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ongoing Bharatiya Natya Utsav 2012, goes on, “The idea was not to box in the speakers but allow them to express their thoughts on the topic given to them. They are artists, and it would be interesting to see how they react to it,” says Priya.

On how Priya broke the theme into sub-topics such as ‘Confluence of Forms,’ ‘Art Continuum’ and ‘Embracing Gender Duality through Art,’ Priya says, “There are certain things that you go by instinct. So when I thought of a topic, certain artists came to my mind at once… I felt they fit in. And that’s how we set about inviting musicians, scholars, writers and of course, dancers. Things just fell into place.” She adds, “The larger idea is to reiterate and reinforce the premise that for growth and creativity in dance, influences are imperative.” Incidentally, the title was inspired by a performance by Leela Samson and a Kathak dancer at Milapfest in England this summer.

The six-day event will see lec-dems, panel discussions, documentary screenings and performances. Says Priya, “This event will offer art lovers a chance to see the artist behind the artistry, as also the artistry behind the artist. The audiences will hopefully get to wear different thinking hats and view dance from different viewpoints and understand the working of an artist’s mind and embrace contradictions.”

A conference such as this requires not just participants but a willing audience as well. “Yes, we have put up posters, and are talking about it on the radio. We want more and more people to come and learn a little more about our tradition.”

As a dancer, Priyadarsini finds solace in her solos. “For me the greatest joy is when I am able to bond with my audience. Even for a fleeting moment. That, for me, is fulfilling, a high.”

Catch Priyadarsini Govind’s solo performance at:

Bharat Kalachar – Dec 22, 7 p.m.

Sri Krishna Gana Sabha – Dec 24, 7.30 a.m.

Slice of Chennai: Dhoby Khana - வண்ணாந்துறை

Winner of The Hindu CIFF Documentary contest. S. Lokesh's film shows us a facet of the city as vital as the clothes we wear, with a poignant narrative, for revealing a city in need of a clean-up, a focussed attempt completely in tune with the tenets of documentary-making.
