That ain't gonna take long!
Does anybody know what's happening with the blocks over by the chemists, Co-Op etc or are they waiting until a developer comes back on-board? Steve |

As in my post #22 - For information the block containing electricity sub station (Tower Court) also has operational shops and supermarket unit - these having been left for community use until the "proposed new development" is carried out Looking like no developer on board yet = may be up for a long while KEN |

So all that remains of Derwent Tower is a ramp and a green door now? It's amazing to think that once this site was home to the tallest tower block in the North East. Thankfully I went past it just before it disappeared.

Ken, Have you seen this recent posting on the BOOKS thread? http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...&postcount=612 It covers the new "Spillers Downfall" book of photographs, by Newcastle photographer Jack Lowe. It is an excellent photographic record of the recent demolition of a quite iconic local landmark, in Spillers Mill/Spillers Wharf. Now, the Derwent Tower (or "Dunston Rocket") is an equally iconic local landmark (perhaps even more so, in my opinion) and your photographs on here (along with other posters) are some of the VERY best photos that I have ever seen! You have recorded for posterity, to a very high quality here on this thread, the demolition from start to finish of this very unique and well known building. Now, it is great for all of us on here, and the Newcastle Forum of Skyscraper City in general, but I think your photos from this thread deserve a far wider audience. Do others agree with me? Ken, have you thought of investigating the possibility of doing a book like the above mentioned Spillers one? I think you could make a better book even than that (excellent) one is!! |

Ravensworth Road Estate/Derwent Tower, Dunston - the cleared site 11/12/12
These photographs taken by myself 11/12/12 approx 1445 showing the "cleared site area" of the Coleman demolition contract - leaving only seeding and establishment of grassed area to take place in the spring
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A big change from what used to be there - this screen print of Google Earth image of July 2008 - only Tower Court (with shops at ground level) and the adjacent supermarket block remain ![]() KEN |

The now demolished Dunston Rocket - proposal for community garden
These scanned copies from page 22 of the Evening Chronicle dated 30/01/13 (hosted on Photobucket) about proposal to provide community garden on the plot of The Rocket
![]() ![]() Always know to me (and told to others on this forum) that the plot was not to be built on Also posted into the Gateshead Developments thread KEN |

At least I got to see it( sort of) last August before it went forever. However, it's amazing that nearly 200 properties could have been built on such a small space of land, the Rocket certainly was very space efficient, if not the nicest and most practical place to live in later years.
So now it joins Killingworth Towers, the Longbenton high rises, Willington Square and part of Cruddas Park in the high rise in the sky. |
