Funny reading the comments on here I visited this bar with avec freund early this eve. It was moderately busy. freezing cold inside, only noticed fire before left maybe OK by that but freezing in our corner. Got hot vimto with cinnamon and cloves which I'd seen on Twitter as the offer of the day. Very friendly girl served us almost as soon as we sat down but the drink took about 15 mins to arrive - ridiculous, was tempted to ask for it free! Nice interior, intimate but spacious feel but let down by the cold! Only saving grace was the foosball table we spotted before leaving, it was free + super fun!

Simon Rogan to take over management of two restaurants at the Midland Hotel in Manchester.

Two-Michelin-starred chef Simon Rogan is to take over the management of two restaurants at the Midland Hotel in Manchester.

The chef-proprietor of L'Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria, and Roganic in London, will take over the running of the former Michelin-starred French restaurant as well as the hotel's second, larger bar and dining room, which is currently called the Colony.

Rogan's appointment coincides with a £400,000 investment taking place at the Midland Hotel. This will include a complete refurbishment of the 50-seat French, which will close in January and reopen late in February. The modern revamp will incorporate the Grade-II listed room's historic features.

At the French Rogan will serve his renowned L'Enclume-style cuisine focused on British only ingredients. The second, larger restaurant, which is yet-to-be-named, will hold around 150 diners and offer a more casual menu not exclusively based on British ingredients.

Rogan, who also runs Rogan & Co in Cartmel, as well as the Pig & Whistle pub, will continue to be based in Cumbria and is in the process of putting together a brigade to oversee the day-to-day running of the operations at the Midland Hotel.

The French was one of Britain's first Michelin-starred restaurants back in the 1970s, when Michelin relaunched its UK guide in 1974.

"There is huge affection for the Midland hotel in Manchester and I want to help bring its restaurants back to their former glory. It's a wonderful challenge," Rogan said.

I popped along Monday evening with a few friends and we were given a really warm welcome at the bar, good selection of beers too. The atmosphere was great and what an innovative design using a few containers. The place was pretty busy and no doubt it'll do very well over the coming weeks and months. Looking forward to my next visit.

I think Prezzo have just taken the ground floor of the former Opus unit, the first floor is being split up for another tenant apparently along with the planned/rumoured mezzanine level within the Pump Yard to access the unit.

Really? when we went in they only offered about 5 different bottled beers and San Miguel on draught. Not what I would call a good beer selection. Like other people we also waited over 15 minutes for our drinks after ordering. It was nice enough but not somewhere I would rave about or go back to in a hurry.

I'm glad that Pong Quay has closed, worst chinese ever! Hopefully something much better in its place like Wetherspoons or a Cafe Nero (should be tons more outlets at the Quays).

Oh thats a shame - I only went to the Salford branch once but I do frequent the Urmston restaurant and it is always packed and the food is great in there. Do you think it could be possibly something to do with Peel putting rents up?

what a shame about Socio Rehab too! I used to be in there a lot when i lived off Chapel Street. Always a good place to start off an evening in town. The cocktails were immense too - hope the new ventrure in as good!
