Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro on Friday said it was selling its medical equipment business based at Mysore to Skanray Healthcare.

However, the company did not disclose the financial details of the transaction.

“L&T has agreed to sell its medical equipment business based at Mysore to Skanray Healthcare Pvt. Ltd.,” according to a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Skanray Healthcare is fully-owned by the founders and investors of Skanray Technologies, which is engaged in the business of diagnostic imaging products and primary healthcare devices.

Its product range includes high frequency X-ray generators, X-ray imaging systems, critical care devices and industrial X-ray imaging.

The construction work is under-way on Larsen & Toubro Ltd.'s Mysore IT/ITES SEZ project. A Company Official, who did not wish to be named, shared this information with CMIE's CapEx team on 22 November 2012. He declined to comment on the other issues related to the project.

Sweden’s SKF sees Asia bearing on growth

To invest Rs 128 cr on seals manufacturing plant in Mysore

MUMBAI, NOV. 22:
SKF, one of the leading automotive and industrial engineering solution providers, plans to renew its focus on Asia, with economic uncertainty clouding growth in other markets. Among Asian countries, the Sweden-headquartered SKF intends to tap the growth opportunity more in China and India.

SKF operates in five technology-centric platforms — bearings and units, seals, mechatronics, lubrication solutions and services in India.

NEW SEAL PLANT

The company is setting up a new seals manufacturing factory in Mysore at an investment of SEK (Swedish Krona) 160 million ( Rs 128 crore). The plant is expected to go on stream early next year. The new factory will serve customers within the automotive, Railway and industrial applications segments. At present, SKF has four manufacturing units in Bangalore, Haridwar, Pune and Ahmedabad.

At Larsen & Toubro's facility in Mysore, engineers are taking apart everything from gadgets to car engines.

This is the tear down lab of L&T's engineering services division - a strategic business unit within L&T that marries engineering skills with IT. It boasts of 7,500 employees, some on the payroll of L&T and others a part of its IT services subsidiary L&T Infotech. It also has a revenue run rate of around $300 million, on par with other niche-engineering services players.

On L&T's scale - revenues of $12 billion plus - this division is still miniscule, but it has chairman AM Naik's backing. Naik was the first to spot the potential here. And after L&T's failed bid to acquire Satyam Computer Services, he hired Satyam senior leader, Keshab Panda, to head this business.

So, L&T now has two, instead of one IT business. This is flummoxing many experts and industry observers.

Together, L&T Infotech and the engineering services SBU would have revenues of close to $1 billion, making it a sizeable player on the IT landscape. "Why not just merge it and make it one?" asks an industry veteran, who's worked with several software companies.

That's one of the three options before L&T when it comes to deciding the future course of its engineering services SBU. The second is to spin it off as a stand-alone and specialised company.

The third is to maintain status quo.

Panda favours the third. Being part of a large engineering conglomerate gives it a huge edge, Panda says. For instance, to orient themselves about the components that go into an offshore rig, employees have to only to visit Hazira, where L&T has a shipbuilding facility. Similarly, they don't have to look far to understand an engine or a power plant. This also gives clients confidence that employees know what they are doing. "Very few groups, other than the Tatas or Mahindras, have such expertise within," says Panda.

This apart, being part of a larger brand this division can gain access to a larger network of suppliers and partners, says an IT industry leader.

"Wipro, till it recently spun off its non-IT business into Wipro Enterprises, was a diversified conglomerate. TCS was also a division of Tata Sons," he points out.

"They (L&T's engineering services division) have expertise in process and plant engineering. This is a very niche area but being part of L&T, they have this knowledge," says Pari Natarajan, CEO, Zinnov, a research firm that recently ranked L&T's engineering services business among the top five in the country. "In terms of talent, engineering services is comparable to L&T's infotech business," he adds.

But on the flip side, the engineering services SBU, housed as it is within L&T, has less visibility. "Attracting and retaining talent will be a problem if they don't spin it off. Employees in a manufacturing set-up work six days a week and salaries are lower than in the IT industry. So, if they have to eventually spin it off, why not merge it with L&T Infotech instead of having two sub-scale entities?" argues the IT industry veteran, quoting the examples of TCS, Wipro and HCL Technologies, which also have large engineering services skills.

Akash, good news at last. If it was not because of the lethargy of the government in handing over the land, this project would have been up and running by now. Having got the land, I am sure by end 2013, these guys will commission the project.

Also, is there any info on 'Phytopharmaceutical project' proposed and cleared by government twice already?

FREUDENBERG SETS OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY RECORD

Mysore, Dec.18- Freudenberg Group, under its "We all take care" initiative, has set another occupational safety record at the plant in Mysore with its workforce of 110. The record was set when associates at the Klüber Lubrication India Pvt. Ltd. plant achieved 3,000 days — equivalent to over 8 years — of accident-free operations.

Klüber Lubrication has been operating from the Mysore site since 1989. In September, Freudenberg Filtration Technologies India in Pune set a record of 4,500 days without an accident.

One of its largest investment projects in India is currently being realised in Mysore. In the period to 2016, Freudenberg will be investing a total of Rs. 130 crore at an approx. 40,000m2 site which produces specialty lubricants, release agents and industrial maintenance products from the Klüber Lubrication, Chem-Trend and OKS brands.

We all take care: This initiative was launched in 2002 during a Freudenberg Group management conference. The objective is to anchor occupational health & safety and environmental protection in the hearts of all associates. New ideas are developed, adopted and continued.

Freudenberg in India: Freudenberg has had business with customers in India for almost 100 years. The Group has a workforce of more than 3,007 employees at 28 locations.

Freudenberg Group develops and manufactures seals, vibration control components, filters, nonwovens, products for surface treatment, release agents and spe-cialty lubricants, medical and mechatronic products.

JK Tyres plans Rs 476 cr expansion at Mysore plant

Once the expansion programme is completed, its capacity will go up to 1.06 million tyres from the current 367,000 tyres per annum

JK Tyres and Industries Ltd is planning to expand the production capacity of truck and bus radial tyres at an investment of Rs 476.5 crore at its Mysore plant in Karnataka. The Karnataka government has recently approved the company’s proposal to expand the capacity.

Once the expansion programme is completed, its capacity will go up to 1.06 million tyres from the current 367,000 tyres per annum. The company has indicated that it will provide fresh employment to about 484 persons.

Recently, the state government approved the company’s proposal and accorded approval, subject to fulfilment of certain conditions including environmental clearance from the state pollution control board and ministry of environment and forests.

The state government has asked the company to prepare a plan for development of human resources required for the project, train local people and provide employment to these trained local youth and comply with the provision of industrial policy of the state government.

According to a government order, the company has been asked to give employment to the family members of the land losers, one for each family as far as possible.

Mysore-based Vinyas raises $1.8M from CanBank Venture Capital Fund

In a span of nine years, the organisation has grown to a net worth of $6 million and has a workforce of over 600 people.

Mysore-based electronic manufacturing services firm Vinyas Innovative Technologies Ltd has raised Rs 10 crore ($1.8 million) from CanBank Venture Capital Fund, the PE unit of Canara Bank. CanBank Venture Capital received convertible preference shares for its investment, according to a report published by Economic Times.

The money raised will be used for the construction of a manufacturing facility at Mysore Industrial Park in Koorgally. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 24 crore of which Rs 14 crore is being funded from internal accruals. The facility is expected to be operational by April 1 this year.

Set up in 2001, Vinyas is an EMS company with DTA (domestic tariff area) and EHTP (electronic hardware technology park) units and focuses on three phases of prototype building. It also specialises in mechanical assembly of parts, also known as ‘black box build.’

The company’s key customers include HCL, Sunair Electronics, Aftek, Philips and Bharat Electronics, among others.

In a span of nine years, the organisation has grown to a net worth of $6 million and has a workforce of over 600 people. It aims to reach $12 million in revenues in the current fiscal.

SPI FOUNDATION LAUNCHED



Mysore, Jan. 16- Software Paradigms Infotech Pvt. Ltd., a technology service provider, celebrated its 15th Annual Day in city recently.

All employees, along with their families, came together to celebrate yet another successful year of the organisation. On the occasion, SPI Foundation, the company's CSR wing, was launched. Best performance awards were presented to the employees.

A global Mysore IT company with desi touch

Walking around the well-manicured lawns even as the young techies pass by, the first thing that strikes one is almost music to the ears. Yes, it is the language and surprisingly they are all speaking in Kannada.

The sprawling five acre campus attracts the attention from a distance and as one enters the software company and meets the genial, soft spoken founder and managing director of the company which is among the top 15 IT employers in the IT industry, according to a survey, everything falls into place.
“My partner Jay Kulkarni was coming out with a lot of theories and he was the one who came up with the name Theorem and it stuck,” said Theorem India co founder and managing director B N Chandrakanth.

The IT company located in the Hootagalli industrial area, which started with just two members in the team today has grown to more than 1000 employees.

“Nearly 80 per cent of our staff are from in and around Mysore and the age group is just between 25 and 26,” he said.

“Everyone was very skeptical about us opening the unit in Mysore. But today we have nearly 1000 people working 24X7 and many of them are women and we have achieved this in a tier two city like Mysore,” he said.
Working in the digital media and online marketing space, the product and services company with state-of-the-art facilities with just over 300 employees in the first phase, when it began its operations in 2008, as true to its promise, increased its strength to over 1,000 employees in five years and also added Theorem Labs — an innovation centre, guest house for visitors, cafeteria and multiple recreational facilities.

“We have a blue chip global customer base and the Mysore operational centre is focused on the execution of the projects for the clients in US, Canada, Europe, Middle East and Australia,” he said.
“Every employee who joins becomes a part of the team and there are frequent competitions which keeps the atmosphere healthy and which results in the camaraderie among the young team,” said senior manager operations Harsha Melanta.

“Eighty per cent of the work force is from places like KR Nagar, Nanjangud, Chamarajanagar and majority from Mysore itself. I myself hail from Mangalore. The company has not changed its policies as far as the treatment of the employees is concerned because the canteen facility which was there when the company was started still continues but only in a much larger scale,” he said.

“In the next four to five years we plan to invest Rs 100 crore and not only increase the work force but also infrastructure,” said Chandrakanth pointing to the open space where he plans to add up one more building to house the staff whom he plans to recruit in large numbers.
