Not quite true, though they are moving along with it.

The picture below shows the view from the Stratford Road end today (18th November 2012), looking towards Shirley Park, with the Saracens Head pub on the right.

The have built a pavement on the right, and surfaced the right hand side of the road, but are now digging up the left had side to surface that.



Below is the view from the Shirley Park end, looking towards the Stratford Road, with the Saracens Head pub and the Premier Inn hotel on the left.



Picture below, but this is where there is still a lot of work to do. This is the view "round the corner", looking towards the British Legion and Scout
headquarters.

This road will eventually lead to the new car park in front of the British Legion and Scout Headquarters.

Once this road, and the car park, is finished, it will allow them to close the road that currently leads up to the British Legion (opposite Greggs)
and continue with the underground car park.

Peeked through a viewing window yesterday: the site and the hole (underground car park) are massive! This has to be one of the biggest construction projects in the region ATM.

It is a massive job, it's surprisingly deep, and the steel structure is taller than it looks in the photos...

It would be great to see an aerial shot from the same spot, but of the construction site today.

It has moved on a lot since the photo above was taken.

The lead project manager, who I met up there a week or so back, did say they had taken more recent aerial pictures.

But they dont seem to be on the Parkgate web site yet.

Took this panorama today, 9th January 2013, to try to get as much of the underground car park in as I can.

Wide panorama so you need to scroll across to see it all

Part of the Asda store is on the very left, the entrance slope to the car park is behind the green lorry, and the area on the right is facing Shirley High St.

whats actually happening with the powergen building anyone know?

they seem to be digging, presumably for road improvements really close to the main building?

And it was designed by John Madin, who also designed the 1970s central library in Birmingham (due to be knocked down).

It seem many of the buildings he designed have been knocked down - Pebble Mill and Birmingham Post and Mail building for example.

p.s. John Madin also designed Barclays Bank in Shirley High St. Also the houses down by Shirley Aquatics.

They are building a roundabout at the junction of Haslucks Green Road and Stratford Road (see plan below). And yes it does go very close to the Powergen building.

I believe Asda still own the Powergen building (it was the original planned site for Asdas). My guess is they are holding on to it as a sort of "insurance" until they get their Asda store built.

Once the Asda is built I assume it will be sold for housing (though I dont think anything has been decided yet).

Of course the housing market is still not too great so we may have a few years to wait. It is in fact a HUGE site (look at it on Google maps or see the picture I posted on this forum at the link below).

I think I will have a party the day they flatten the powergen building and the adjacent eyesore buildings that surround it.

It really is the blight of the area, it destroys what is otherwise a pleasent high street and attractive area to residents and visitors alike.

Ideally I'd like a nice pub/restaurant in it's place, with further parking and some quality landscaping.

I's also like to see some sort of entertainment complex, maybe a cinema, bowling, eateries type centre on the stratford road - where burger king/renault garage currently are. But that is very optimistic.
