DA completes P10M farm-market-road projects in Kalinga
By Larry T. Lopez
Thursday 20th of December 2012

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Dec. 20 (PIA) -– The Department of Agriculture (DA) has completed two farm-market-road (FMR) projects worth P10 million in the province this year.

Reported completed by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG) are the FMR projects in Barangay Santor, Rizal and Barangay Nambaran, Tabuk City, each costing P5 million.

Joe Casibang of OPAG said the two projects were part of the eight FMR projects promised to Kalinga by DA Sec. Proceso Alcala worth P34.5 million for 2012 aimed at increasing agricultural production.

Aside from these, another project in Bantay Pataddog, Tabuk City is on-going worth P3.3 million while the remaining five units have just been bid out.

Casibang explained the FMR project is under DA’s infrastructure support facility to encourage farmers to boost production level as they can now bring their farm produce to market outlets.

Farmers would be motivated to open new farm lands bringing additional production area to the province. This way, production is increased, Casibang said.

Agricultural products will also improve - from mere traditional rice, corn and coffee, to other high value crops that promise higher income to farmers, Casibang noted.(JDP/LL- PIA CAR, Kalinga)

Kalinga hotel, restaurant owners ink code of good practices
By Larry T. Lopez
Thursday 20th of December 2012

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Dec. 20 (PIA) -- Hotel and restaurant owners in the province signed yesterday the Voluntary Code of Good Practices (VCGP) prescribed by the Industrial Tripartite Council (ITC) in the Cordillera region.

The Code contains the guidelines that regulate operation of hotels and restaurants on their compliance to Labor Laws and other Social Legislations.

The Cordillera Hotel and Restaurant Tripartite Council composed of all line agencies and local government units that have direct concern in the hotel and restaurant business is the first tripartite body in the entire region to come-up with this code.

The council came-up with final version of the Code after tedious consultations with stakeholders of the business sector to assure fair and healthy conditions for all parties concerned.

Parties involved in the signing include hotel and restaurant owners as employers, employee representatives, partner agencies and Head of the Cordillera Region Labor and Employment Office.

Assuring healthier employer-employee relation, the code is seen to push further growth of the booming hotel and restaurant industry here in Kalinga. (JDP/LL-PIA CAR,Kalinga)

Kalinga farmers urged to engage in coffee propagation, processing
By Geraldine G. Dumallig
Saturday 22nd of December 2012

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Dec. 22 (PIA) –- Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Kalinga Provincial Director Grace Baluyan is encouraging coffee farmers to engage in coffee propagation and processing.

Baluyan said farmers here are now getting interested in the coffee processing business having seen its potentials.

She said that with the continuous advocacy and assistance of DTI, its partner agencies and the local government units, local farmers in the coffee pilot barangays of Balawag, Mananig and Gawidan have increased their income by at least 50 percent margin monthly by selling roasted or ground coffee.

The DTI-Cordillera regional office identified Kalinga as coffee champion with the said barangays as pilot areas.

“These three barangays are now showing how farmers could gain more with coffee,” she said.

Instead of directly selling coffee beans to traders, farmers are now roasting and processing their beans to supply their specialty markets such as the local consumers and processors including Nestle and Figaro.

Production of gourmet Robusta is also being encouraged since earning from the wet processed coffee demands at least an additional P35 in the selling price compared to dry processed coffee.

“Coffee corporations are buying per metric tons of gourmet Robusta, and this is what we are trying to tell the farmers so they would also take interest of planting additional coffee trees in their farms to meet the demands of corporation instead of buying from coffee traders if their stocks run-out,” she said.

To address this, the coffee project in the province in partnership with the Rural Micro-Enterprise Promotion Programme (RuMEPP) and the City Agricultural office (CAO) and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Tabuk has included in the program component the input provision the production and planting of quality seedlings.

Focus she said is now on the revival of old coffee plantations and the propagation of more trees to ensure the steady and sufficient supply of coffee from the province.

Targeted for coffee planting in Tabuk city is around 120 hectares in Balawag. But these she said could still increase.

Baluyan added that to help the farmers in this development, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the National Greening Program in partnership with DTI and the Department of Agriculture are offering P25 per seedling planted or P10,000 per hectares plantation to farmers just to propagate quality coffee trees.

As a climate change mitigating measure, coffee tree planting she said is also greatly encouraged by the government instead of planting high value crops that demand big areas which at times require the clearing up of some forest just to a accommodate planting area.

Coffee as a high value crop is cheaper and demands lesser farm input. To ensure its productivity, farmers only have to clean and prune the trees and if they want could opt to fertilize it to increase bean production, she said.

Coffee plantation she said is also an alternative in converting kaingin areas into an inter-cropped farming system, which gives farmers the option to introduce others crops in their coffee farms for their daily needs.

Baluyan explained that the development of the coffee industry in the province is very much viable considering that the area especially the upland municipalities are favorable for coffee propagation.

“There’s a better chance for farmers to earn more if they are willing to learn and do extra work to increase their gains,” she said.

With these endeavors, Baluyan appealed on the other municipal local government units of Kalinga to also pursue the development of their coffee industry in the upland areas (JDP/GGD- PIA CAR, Kalinga)

To my fellow Luzon forumers,

The auxuliary threads (such as SHOP DINE STAY, Travel and Tourism and etc.) has been merged with their respective main local threads as agreed upon with my fellow moderators. The threads for the Festivals of Luzon and Colleges and Universities in Luzon has been merged with the Philippine Fiestas and Celebrations and the Colleges and Universities in the Philippines' threads respectively.

This is to keep the Luzon forum free from redundant posts and duplicate threads

This will be implemented first here in Luzon and the Visayas and Mindanao forums will soon follow.

Let's keep this forum alive and kicking by posting more of our urbanity and developments in our localities.

Cheers!
