Any updates will be appreciated, Gandhinagar doesnt get much coverage!

Apart from Mahatma Mandir, there is this "Swarnim Park" project, that would be great if you could get some updates for! It should be between two parallel roads between Mahatma Mandir and Sachvilay (although I dont know if the 2nd road has even been built yet!)

Swarnim Park
Gandhinagar link

The 1960’s plan of Gandhinagar conceived a grand boulevard – the Central Vista, as the focal point of the city that would run on a north-west, south-east axis from the railway station to the Sabarmati River. The Vista was envisioned as a large public space for people to visit and enjoy.

Unfortunately even forty years later, this vision has not been realised. The Central Vista lacks the experience of a central space. It is sparsely built with no attractions and incomplete roads. More importantly there is no binding vision and decision making system to ensure that opportunities are not squandered.

The design concept by HCP identified the elements that work together to create an iconic space: Axis, Focal Point, Nodes, Edges, Movement, Activities, Meaning and Symbolism. These elements are used to restructure along with the design strategies comprising of streamlining the existing road network, creating an extensive pedestrian network and identifying a variety of land uses on the Central Vista axis. A comprehensive landscape strategy corresponding to the land use ranges from ecological to informal public areas. The design proposes a comprehensive vision that can guide the development of the Central Vista over time and make it a truly symbolic space.

A graphical impression by artist showing Mahatma Mandir as the center of inspiration, Secretariat complex as the center of hard work, and Panchamrut building as the center of results

The 1960′s plan of Gujarat’s capital town Gandhinagar had provision of a grand boulevard – the Central Vista, as the focal point of the town that would run on a north-west, south-east axis from the railway station to the Sabarmati river. The vista was envisioned as a large public space for people to visit and enjoy. Forty years later the vision is under implementation now.

The state Urban Development Department (UDD) is now constructing a 2.9-km-long central vista at an estimated cost of Rs 17 crore, on the lines of the Delhi’s Rajpath, Capitol Centre and Lincoln Memorial Museum in the US(similar to the National Mall in Washington, United States). It will showcase the state’s history and also boast of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi placed in between.

The first phase of the project has already started, with construction of a 10-m road between Vidhan Sabha and the Mahatma Mandir has started. The parking facility, a walkway and cycle track on both sides is expected to be completed in the next 10 months.
The forest department will develop a green zone along this stretch.

The stretch has been planned in a way so that one will be able to see the Mahatma Mandir while standing near the Gandhi statue, which is on the Gujarat Assembly campus. The only statue that can be sighted between the Mahatma statue and the mandir will be that of Baba Saheb Ambedkar.

Buildings near the National Mall in US are quite identical. But in Gandhinagar one cannot have identical buildings. This is because while one side of the road has the Udyog Bhavan the other side has the Town Hall. Hence the idea to have identical buildings was dropped by the government.

The second phase will involve construction of the road between Vidhan Sabha and Sabarmati river. A museum on state history and some other buildings would be also constructed near Sabarmati river. However, a detailed plan is yet to be prepared for the second phase.

Pune architects to design IIT Gandhinagar campus

Quote:
Four Pune-based architects who collectively call themselves Mitimitra are all set to design the IIT Gandhinagar campus. They got a chance to design the prestigious project after their design concept was chosen by a special jury nominated by the Board of Governors at IIT, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

The four Mitimitra members, Madhav Hundekar, Makarand Godbole, Madhura Mulay and Vikram Hundekar, have been working in the field of architecture for the past 22 years.

After getting the masterplan of the campus ready, IIT Gandhinagar held a competition and invited architects from across India. The competition was aimed at getting the best design and concept for the permanent campus to be set up at Palej village in on 400 acres.

The campus will have mainly three major areas, the academic buildings, housing for the staff and faculty and hostels for students. The academic buildings would have a lecture theatre complex, research laboratories and facilities for the faculty and students, and recreational spaces for students including canteens and exhibition areas.

The winning design evolved by Mitimitra consists of a unique concept of development of an educational 'spine' - the hub of activities for the entire campus -and unique 'identities' not only for the buildings, but also for spaces contained within them.

The design also employs many green technologies like night-purge cooling, rainwater harvesting, passive down-drought evaporation and cooling, and also aims at reusing every drop of water on campus,” said Mitimitra members at a press conference in the city on Thursday. They said construction of the buildings at the Palej site would begin in a couple of months.

Here's Edifice Architects' design for BJP's new state HQs. This went up on their website back in April, so this isn't a new proposal:

Quote:
Bharatiya Janata Party
Project : Gujarat Headquarters
Location: Gandhinagar, Gujarat
Land Parcel : 5 acres
BUA : 100,000 sft

A leading political party desired the architecture of its headquarters to match its vision of humane development, and connection and engagement with the locals. The scheme comprised work areas, multipurpose and media halls, café, library and associated utility areas on a 3 acre property at Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India.

The functions are broadly segregated as private work areas, semi public and public areas. Zoning thus, brings flexibility, which would enable operating the office as a local development centre, an institution and relating to the locals, reinforcing and establishing the true purpose of the building.

A simple portal marks the entrance, leading to the South Court which ascends via a series of steps to the welcome court. The functional spaces planned around the Central Court are designed in response to the extreme hot and dry climate, involving passive cooling, eco-friendly techniques and use of local materials and skills. Each function is expressed as an individual built form, as well as a part of the whole complex.

The Central Court opens to the North Ground for larger gatherings. A minimal metal screen perimeter fence along the roadside blurs the boundary enhancing visual connectivity.

Inspiration originating from the traditional attire of the natives, where a veil or turban is used to protect the body from the scorching heat, the central court is designed with a sliding and folding perforated screen which can shade a gathering from the harsh sun, typical of this area.

The building roof slab is insulated with reinforced earthen pots and green decking which reduces heat gain considerably and also has the potential to add solar arrays in the future.

Successful design environments reinforce loyalty, interest, energy levels and excitement within the organization. It is our belief that a company's
workspace design should reflect its culture and should advance its business goals.

Therefore, the workspaces should be open and egalitarian, promote collaboration, facilitate communication and knowledge exchange across levels.
Designs should adapt to people and must create an environment that helps them to engage in productive tasks. It should also enable typical changes that are required during the life of the workspace, as demanded by the changes in marketplace.

Central Vista (Current)

The stitch is slightly distorted, otherwise the entire thing is perfectly straight.

That is the Gandhi Sculpture Garden.

It seems to be recent addition to the overall masterplan and thus its not there in the earlier plans.

The Gandhi Garden slopes upwards towards the 2 convention halls and thus we get a huge garden spanning the entire convention center.

The main center of attraction is yet to start i.e. the cable stayed bridge. It will directly take people from the main complex to the Salt Mound which will be enclosed on all sides by a water body.
