It’s time to show some courtesy

http://www.deccanherald.com/content/...-courtesy.html

Quote:
The problems faced by Bangaloreans travelling by buses are many and varied. Trying to board a crowded bus is one such hazard. As soon as a bus approaches, it is common to see people rushing towards it and struggling to board.

And there lies the problem. Bus drivers often do not wait till the passengers board the bus and find a proper foothold. Bangaloreans, who face this problem on a regular basis, share their thoughts.

Evelyn, a teacher and senior citizen, says, “First of all, the buses do not halt at the bus stops. We have to chase the bus and finally when we try boarding it, the driver and the conductor are not even courteous enough to wait until we get a foothold. I am a senior citizen, I do not have the strength of a young person. I might take some extra time to get into the bus.”

“The bus drivers are not at all considerate. They start yelling at me and say, ‘how long will you take? We do not have the entire day for you’. I think the bus drivers and conductors – together – need to be educated about treating the passengers in the right manner.”

Bus drivers should be fined whenever they misbehave with the passengers. Divya Jyothi, a management student, says, “Many times, the bus starts moving even when the passengers are boarding. Not just that, the driving is so rash. When the driver applies the brake suddenly, the passenger loses his or her balance.

I do not really understand how one can be so insensitive. If they are fined, probably they will behave properly.” While a majority of the bus drivers are rude, there are those who are courteous too. “Some of the bus drivers are chivalrous and are patient enough to wait until the passengers have settled down.

But the majority does not care. Once when I complained to a driver about his behaviour, he bluntly said, ‘Get down if you do not like my behaviour, nobody is asking you to board the bus.’ C Nagaraj, chief traffic manager (operations), BMTC says, “We are trying our best to ensure that all bus drivers behave in a highly civilised way.

We are conducting training courses spanning from three days to one week. Every batch will have 200 drivers, who will be trained on various issues, including soft skills. We are also getting psychologists to deal with their problems. However, in many cases, when the bus drivers have misbehaved with passengers, we have warned them, shifted them to a different department. In severe cases, we have also suspended them.”

I understand..My facts were based on google maps..

You were trying to put across the list of officially numbered dual depots within one area and i told that suryanagar is Chandapur and not electronic city..Just that..
Kindly dont take it personally..M not trying to underestimate you or your findings.. its just that all forumers need to be aware of the fact that they are not actually closeby.

i would have agreed if it was officially named "E.CITY dept-2".But its not...

I m here to find and have the exact knowledge rather than misguiding or misleading anyone.

i always try to put forth things that are official.. and my earlier reply also intended the same.

Penalty for ticketless travelling

http://www.deccanherald.com/content/...ravelling.html

Quote:
The checking staff of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) have intensified the inspection of ticketless travellers in buses operated in and around Bangalore City.*

During November, they checked 19,093 trips and penalised 6,143 ticketless passengers by collecting a sum of Rs 7,25,030 as penalty and booked 3,666 cases against conductors, for initiating disciplinary action.*

The BMTC has requested passengers to travel in BMTC buses with valid tickets, day pass or monthly pass, as it would help the Corporation to provide better services to the travelling public.

BMTC plans route timing changes

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/12122...timing-changes

Quote:
Bengaluru: Commuters of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) have started facing problems as the frequency of buses on many routes has fallen drastically. Seeing the grave situation, BMTC aims to rationalise schedules so that commuters don’t have to wait for long for buses during peak hours.

Chief Traffic Manager (Operations), BMTC, Nagraj told Deccan Chronicle: “We have started rationalisation of bus schedules. This is a regular exercise which we take up to ensure effective functioning of the BMTC bus fleet. We are in the process of rationalising some of the schedules. This would lead to some changes in the timings. When we introduce new schedules passing through a particular road, it paralyses some other schedules.”

Route rationalisation has become important to BMTC amid rising price of diesel. Optimising the utilisation of buses is the key to extracting the best overall revenue for the fleet. With the new trunk-and-feeder operations being put in place, BMTC hopes to improve its overall revenues with minimal hike in ticket prices and also help customers plan their travel better.
“We are starting feeder services and we have taken up the Electronic City corridor up to Chandapura, Attibele, Sarjapura and ElectronicCity. We will start it on three or four other identified routes, like Varthur. This will help commuters reach major bus stands which are at some distance. This will help provide the last-mile connectivity,” Nagraj said.

BMTC also plans to add more buses on the more crowded routes of Big 10. The G4 route between Brigade Road and Bannerghatta will see more buses in the coming days as there has been a growing demand. There are 12 buses on this route now.

BMTC buses to get tech edge

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/12122...-get-tech-edge

Quote:
Bengaluru:Travelling by BMTC buses in Bengaluru may soon be a hassle-free experience. The corporation’s entire fleet will adopt the Integrated Bus Transit (IBT) System which was implemented in Mysore last month for the first time in the country.

The BMTC has planned to call for tenders to install the IBT system in the coming days. This means the passengers at most of the bus stands will be able to get real-time information of buses, location, seating availability and a host of other information.

Once implemented, the project has the potential to increase patronage for public transport system in Bengaluru, transport planners feel.

Besides display screens at bus stops, the system also stresses on having in-vehicle display system and automated voice announcement system in all buses. The IBT system also offers services like SMS queries, commuter-friendly website and a dedicated help desk for commuters, a BMTC official said.

Each bus stop will have a television screen showing arrival time of buses and a map on which one can see the location of a bus. “All buses will be mounted with GPS software and drivers will be given head sets to communicate with the control room in case of a breakdown. The system will also help in smooth movement of buses since the roads where buses ply are monitored at the control room,” the official said.

sadhyakke aagodhu doubte. Given we might have early elections in Mar-Apr. I feel they would go slow on this and check the results of the election and start again, i.e if BJP comes back to power. They would not want the next government to take accolades on their work.

A year of acceleration for transport sector

The year 2012 has been a mixed bag of experiences for commuters in the City and State, in any mode of travelling.

Quote:
The year marked the first anniversary of Namma Metro’s commercial operations along Reach 1 - between MG Road and Baiyyappanahalli stations.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) celebrated the occasion by felicitating several freedom fighters from different parts of the State, who also took their first ride on the train.

Going by the statistics, the Namma Metro received good response with 22,000 passengers using the facility on an average every day. By October, the total fare box revenue of Reach 1 service crossed Rs 12 crore and a total of 80,21,648
passengers had availed the service.

Even though the tunneling works along the underground corridors of Namma Metro gained pace during the year, elevated corridor works at selected junctions were held up due to various reasons. While a tussle with the Indian Railways delayed the elevated corridor work along Reach 3 (between Sampige Road and Yeshwantpur) for more than six months at Malleswaram, at some other points, land acquisition and legal hurdles posed problems for project implementation.

Even though the High Court recently cleared the blocks for shifting the Dr Ambedkar statue in front of Vidhana Soudha to facilitate underground work, the real action on the ground is yet to begin.

As a result, Bangaloreans have to wait for taking a ride on Namma Metro along other reaches.

Railways

The Bangalore City Railway Station became the first railway network to offer BluFi, a combination of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi facilities in March this year. Later in the year, day train to Chennai with state-of-the-art facilities like live television and Internet facility was launched.

However, the question of railway safety surfaced again on May 22, when the Hubli-Bangalore Hampi Express met with an accident at Penukonda in Andhra Pradesh, killing 25 people and injuring more than 55. Even though seven railway staffers were suspended in connection with the accident, the safety at railway stations, basic infrastructure and problems with signalling continue to haunt train journeys in the State.

KSRTC/ BMTC

Karnataka State Road Transport Service (KSRTC) ushered in 2012 by releasing a Coffee Table Book as it completed 50 years of operations. The book gave glimpses of milestones, innovations and achievements of the Corporation in the past five decades.

The Corporation also pressed the technology button many a times in the year by introducing state-of-the-art buses, including the one with live television with more than 60 channels for passengers in each seat. Airavata Bliss bus with kitchen - complete with oven, refrigerator and coffee-maker, Airavatha Superia with chemical toilet have also been introduced during the year. However, the utility of the services is yet to be gauged since they are in pilot mode.

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation came up with Asia’s first 14.5-metre -long city bus.

The bus, operating along the Outer Ring Road, has a capacity to carry more than 100 passengers. The bus services across the State were hit for almost four days after the KSRTC and BMTC staff went on a strike in September.

Intelligent system

A major step towards automation of transport services was the introduction of the nation’s first Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in Mysore, at a cost of Rs 20 crore. The ITS provides real time information on arrival and departure of buses and passenger information service through SMS and on the website.

The service is expected to reduce waiting time for passengers, reduce traffic congestion and improve efficiency of operations. However, the effectiveness of the service is yet to be analysed.

I don't feel it's nonsense, he has said the right thing,it's so dangerous when you have to board the buses from opposite side.
The BMTC drivers have no care for the lives of passengers.

BMTC finances still unbalanced

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/17757765.cms

Quote:
BANGALORE: Although the state road transport corporation in Karnataka and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) have been the most talked about sustainable undertakings in the country, these public transport operators are burdened to bear high costs of fuel and pay taxes, only because it shows a bit of profit made.

At a round table organized by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in New Delhi, last week, solutions were being talked about to make bus transport operators financially sustainable.

Realities were worrisome. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) which gets loads of money pumped in from the central government and state government of Delhi runs on losses beyond Rs 200 crore annually and Mumbai at Rs 50 crore but Bangalore earns a profit of around Rs 20 crore annually.

However, the BMTC pays Rs 3000 crore for fuel alone and to add to their woes, they pay high income tax to the state government, which other city bus transport operators don't have to pay because they are running in losses.

BMTC runs over 6500 buses in the city and its suburbs, covering over 1000 sq km, operating over 79000 schedules daily.

Like all other transport corporations in cities, BMTC is also liable to pay over 15 types of taxes which include property tax, excise on bus procurement, spare parts and consumables, VAT on procurement, consumables and spare parts, land acquisition tax, motor vehicle tax, passenger tax, customs and advertisement tax.

Since it is also a profit making corporation, it is liable to pay income taxes to the tune of Rs 5000 crore annually to the state government too, while its counterparts in Delhi, Gurgaon, Lucknow, Kolkata, Mumbai or Ahmedabad don't have to pay income tax to government.

These city bus transport operators already pay the 15 types of taxes to the state and centre and also have to re-pay loans taken from central government and under JNNURM and high interest amount for bus procurement through NURM.

The taxes paid on bus procurement are over Rs 50 crore annually by BMTC while DTC pay overs Rs 20 crore and Mumbai pays over Rs 45 crore for the same.

The costs of BMTC including operation, maintenance and personnel costs goes above Rs 100 crore and 95% of revenue generated (over Rs 120 crores) comes from fare revenue.

In fact suggestions from CSE to promote advertisements on buses were considered for DTC and other loss making bus transport operators in the country.

Sunita Narain, director general of CSE and Anumita Roychoudhury researcher and advocate of the organization suggested exempting bus transport systems from high transport taxes, lower interest rates for bus procurement and assuring fiscal incentives to make the infrastructure sustainable. Like the central government and states have made it for the metro systems in different states.

"We have failed to understand why the system makes it more costly to buy a bus for a public transport corporation but not a car. We need to force the government to bring back the annual car taxes and also force to exempt buses from being highly taxed. Planning commission, states and urban development department should prepare an integrated road and transport policy, plans and budget allocations for all cities. Over 85% of budgets are allocated to making roads and flyovers but not for adding more buses is the problem," said Sunita Narain.

The CSE and transport experts from all corners suggested 50% of budgets should flow to upgrading road and transport infrastructure and 10% of it must show non-motorised transport infrastructure raising, depots and terminus to be made accessible and maintenance, safety and usage for public transport to be considered as primary, monitoring of information systems to users should begin at the right earnest and plan last mile connectivity as an integral part of commuting.

These suggestions were sent to the planning commission, urban development department and ministry for surface road transport.

Bus commuters take a hit

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/17776598.cms

Quote:
BANGALORE: Endless wait for BMTC buses is the norm today. Priyashu Dey, a techie and resident of Maruthi Nagar, commutes to Electronic City every day for work. "My shift starts at 3pm. I have to take a bus at 2pm, but that is also the lunch hour for the bus staff. So I have to leave my house at 1.30 pm in order to travel by a single bus. Else, I will have to change two buses," says Dey.

Vidushi Chandra, techie and resident of Cox Town who travels to Marathahalli every day, explains her frustrating moments at the Shivajinagar bus station. "I see empty buses going off without stopping. This must stop," she says.

The situation was expected in eastern areas of the city where Namma Metro began operations over a year back. BMTC was expected to stop its operations on longer routes in the area and run feeder services in sync with Namma Metro schedules.

Subasana Goswami, a metro and BMTC passenger, complains of poor feeder services from CV Ramannagar to Old Madras road metro station. "I don't get feeder buses most of the time. My husband ends up dropping me at the metro station in the morning. If the feeder services could be enhanced, I could save money and time," she says.

Deliberations at a round-table organized recently by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in Delhi to grapple with the anomalies of public transport in the country's big cities threw light on the root cause of Bangalore's peculiar problem.

It was revealed that one of the reasons for Bangalore's problems was the skewed distribution of benefits under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) which funds purchase of low-floor buses.

Under JnNURM, Bangalore has got only 1,000-odd buses, while Delhi has walked away with 1,600 buses, Kolkata 1,450 and Chennai 1,200. This, despite Bangalore being overwhelmingly dependent on bus as a mode of public transport. Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai have fully developed suburban railways/metros in place.

The expert speakers blamed the situation on the flawed basis of JnNURM allocation: 50 buses per lakh in cities with over 4 million population and 40 buses per lakh where population is between 0.5 and 4 million. Only 20% of the allocations were low-floor buses.

SK Lohia, ex-officio joint secretary, Union ministry of urban development which administers JnNURM, admitted, "Of course, 6,500 buses in Bangalore are insufficient as the city's bus transportation needs are growing faster than expected."

JnNURM allocation basis has since been re-defined and fixed at 60 buses per lakh population and tagged to various other criteria. But experts said the new allocation basis too does not take into account factors like increasing population.
