Got to say I preferred the building before they butchered it. Seems a lot of insensitive redevelopment of some fairly solid postwar architecture is taking place. Sadly the fairly complimentary proposals that first go for planning end up being cheapened beyond recognition and Birmingham ends up with terrible redevelopments like this one. IMO

Really don't understand why they can't ghost the windows in one uniform pattern! Surely they could lay out the rooms for this effect

Or even better move the toilets to the centre! I assume this is why they're ghosted out?

God damn, why can't they tint the glass so it matches the panels! Or make the panels darker!

Are they having a fucking laugh????

If they were going to ghost out windows, why didn't they use black laminates/adhesives??

It wouldn't look so bad if there was one uniform pattern rather than just being random, the 6th row of glazing from the left looks ok with it being a uniform and symmetrical pattern

Cheers for the pics anyway ilc

It doesn't look too bad as it matches the windows just below, but I don't understand why they have to use these pale blue windows instead of something so less obvious, can you tell the same people refurbished Cumberland House. I don't think Intercontinental will be too happy with this, it looks very cheap compared to the other Staybridge's in the UK.

Why? It looks Ludicrous, so 80's with the bizarre random patterns!

In fairness, it's not that random. The problem is the proportion of windows to blank panels, and that they haven't tried to disguise them. So it is instantly obviously that there are very few windows on the facade, which then just looks cheap.

Just out of interest, how cheap is this job? It looks like it's designed by a real newbie, or a shite shite shite Archi.

Staybridge Hotel Developments
January/February 2013

The replacement of the existing curtain walling to Martineau Way and Corporation Street to the high level floors is due for completion by the end of January 2013. Once complete the existing mastclimber access will be adapted to allow roof and parapet works to commence, followed by the installation of the main roof coverings and GRP cladding to the column fins. On completion of these works the mastclimbers and structural supports will be dismantled to allow installation of the lower level curtain walling. Works are ongoing to the two gable end stair towers including increasing window openings and concrete repairs with main render works due to commence at the beginning of February 2013 for a 10 week period. The external scaffold will be stripped upon completion of the render. Internally the 1st fix partitions and mechanical & electrical installations are progressing with demolition works now completed to the main tower block. Demolition works and strip out will now commence in the retail areas within Martineau Place.

I took the cross city line out to Sutton from New Street on Saturday. I didn't realise how prominent this building is from the railway. Hopefully the final product will give a better impression than before.
