Two main observations, drink prices had been jacked up and the actual Christmas gifts (rather than food and drink) had been downsized, I could only find one stall across all markets selling Stollen for example!

Ha! I found three, in At Annes Sq. on Thurs, selling at half price for £5 each (looked mass produced), the main Stollen/cake stall in Albert Sq, selling for a tenner but I bought three for £15 on the german Chocolate Santa stall in Albert Sq.
Bargain!

Wernt any in Albert square a couple of weeks ago though they do rotate stall holders slightly.

This will give the city centre a massive boast.

September, though.

Quote:
The Manchester Christmas Markets are set to open in September this year to cash in on the ‘huge demand’ from visitors.

The expanded market - which will now offer bratwurst, mulled wine and hand carved treats for FOUR MONTHS instead of the usual six weeks - will also see 100 new stalls added on a new pitch, all the way up Oxford Road.

I really wish one of those bratwurst stands that operate at the Xmas markets would set up shop someplace in town so I could get big tasty sausage based fast food all year round. Either that or Herman Ze German open up a location in Manchester...

Damn I'd love some currywurst right about now but you just can't get it in Manchester in April...

Manchester's Christmas Markets.

Opens in 3 more day's.

Quote:

Manchester’s award-winning Christmas Markets return this winter offering mouth-watering international food, drinks and delicately crafted Yuletide gifts in the heart of this buzzing city.

With more than 300 beautifully festooned stalls and chalets spread across the city centre, the Christmas Markets are free and accessible to all.

Soak up the atmosphere and follow the market trail as it winds through the city centre, tempting you with gifts, crafts, jewellery, clothes and toys. European and local producers offer everything from fine amber jewellery, handcrafted leather bags and top-quality bonsai trees, to handmade Belgian kitchenware, framed photo prints and French soaps.

And when planning a visit, don’t miss the amazing array of food and drink! Manchester’s Christmas Markets are famous for traditional bratwurst, but visitors can also treat themselves to Hungarian goulash, Spanish paella or a good old-fashioned hog roast.

Plenty of vegetarian options will be on offer, and for those with a sweet tooth the choices are even more mouth-watering.

Locations:

Christmas Market, Cathedral Gardens
Market Street
Christmas Market, Exchange Square
Christmas Market, Corn Exchange
Arts and Crafts Market, Exchange Street
Christmas Market, New Cathedral Street
French Christmas Market, King Street
German Christmas Market, St Ann's Square

Is it me or does anyone else think its appalling the Christmas lights switch on and the markets happen before Remembrance Sunday.

I see 'Zippy' has returned over the Town Hall entrance, used to hate it but it is becoming sort of quaint now.

Perhaps we can move Remembrance Sunday forward a few weeks?

Seriously, I do think we over-egg the markets a bit by starting them so early. Perhaps we could do the authentic German thing and start them on December 1st and let them run until January 5th rather than closing them down before Christmas. It would be nice to have them open all through the holidays and into the sales.

I see the Albert Square site is enclosed in a ring of concrete barrier blocks this year. Like these. There's also a steel gate that can be closed, just past the top of Mount St., but given it's a bus route, that may be just a precaution. It would be nice to shoo all the buses and taxis away from the square when it's busy, mind.

Agreed, feels a bit of an anti climax that they're packed up by Christmas Eve. They remain open in Germany from my experience.

It's a horrible week between Boxing day and New Year also. Said in the past the markets would do great in that period because everywhere is dead.

Is that not why they would NOT do well though: because the city is dead during that week and everyone's lost interest anyway? It's not dead because there's no markets it's dead because there's no one around and those that are, are at the arndale hunting for bargains.

I think the attitude towards Christmas has become very anti climactic in this country. It all starts so early that by Christmas Day everyone is sick of the sight of anything Christmas-y.

In other european countries the Christmas period is still largely confined to, erm, Christmas. I'm going to Madrid later and guarantee there will be no sign of Christmas there yet.

I do seem to remember the Christmas markets being all go in Bruges when i visited a few years back, and i am sure that was in mid November, so i thought i would have a bit of a look online.
Most Euro cities seem to start theirs in the last week of November but there is a fair few (Vienna, Tallin, Graz, Metz, Lille) who start next week.
