I have to say I was initially disappointed with the finished Shard much like many others. I live half a mile away and see it every day and have watched its construction in anticipation. However over the past few months, and since about October specifically, my opinion has changed and I've come to love it once more. Maybe it's because it is gradually becoming occupied, or rather it is looking occupied as the internal fit-out is well under way. It is alive, it is here, and I get its gentle impact upon the skyline. Can you imagine anything else that tall being in that location? I've noticed the multi-coloured spire tonight and look forward to other colour schemes in the future and, hopefully, a few fireworks launched from the top next year perhaps.

I wonder if fireworks will ever be launched, I guess being directly over a major railway station doesn't help, probably a bit of a H&S risk! The eye is quite far from Waterloo so doesn't loom over it in quite the same way.

Ummm... other than the different colour scheme tonight, nothing happened like the BBC News article suggested.

Does anyone else think the south facade (the one shown above) is its best side? I really like how the glass is on two separate layers as it comes down the left side then cuts across to the right as it reaches the lower floors. The shard tip also seems to have more drama to it the way the angle is. Almost a shame this wasn't the west facade, as it would look quite crisp in the view from the Millennium Bridge.

Along St Thomas Street this morning. New paving going down and Thames Water are finishing up their works.

![]() Does anyone know if St Thomas Street is to be refurbished once the works are finished. I hope it's not a patch work of repaired tarmac and old rusty road signs. |

"Things are looking up for filling The Shard"
From today's Telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/c...The-Shard.html
At last. As concerns continued to mount that The Shard was struggling to find tenants for its 590,000 sq ft of office space, it emerges developer Irvine Sellar is within a whisker of announcing the first corporate residents of his Qatari-backed skyscraper. The contracts with two prospective occupants are in the closing stages of being signed off as the lawyers fine-tune the small-print, with the space-takers set to be formally announced in the next couple of weeks. Last summer, speculation emerged that Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera and US management consultant AT Kearney were in talks with Sellar Property Group, which is in charge of filling the space with agents Jones Lang LaSalle and Knight Frank. So when a spokesman for Sellar Property reconfirmed that media and financial services companies are among the firms being courted to relocate to The Shard, you can forgive Diary for making the logical link. “Our leasing policy is mixed-use, and we want our tenants to reflect that,” is all my man in London Bridge would disclose. Meanwhile, The Shard’s 10 residential apartments, which sit between the soon-to-be-completed viewing gallery and the Shangri-La Hotel, are taking longer to shift. But this is absolutely fine with the state of Qatar, which provided 95pc of the tower’s £450m cost. The Qataris are, apparently, “playing a long game” as they diversify their assets away from oil and gas. When the super-prime penthouses are eventually leased or sold, the Qataris’ business partner Irvine Sellar expects they will go for “record prices”. “I think London will owe a great deal to Qatar,” the developer predicted. |

So the Shard paid for by the Qataris will rent space out to Al-Jazeera owned by the government of Qatar.
Hmmmm.
