In India one cannot invest in retail chain like some one like Walmart for the main reason is here interest rates are very high. This interest rate itself is enough to kill competition apart from political blockages which one can expect considering how much government was interested in allowing them. Once they become whole sale stockist then a manufacturer/farmer has no other option other than to sell to them for the least profit which will directly affect the salaries etc.,. of those firms. Wallmart has to procure some thing like 38%(I dont know the exact figure) locally and rest they are allowed to import. They are not going to pay high prices here for eg.,.rice etc.,. as it is cheaper in other countries. They will be importing them. What will the farmers here do then? Instead of rotating the money within ourselves we are going to give that to them. Already they are making the profits in the manufacturing sector. Now retail also they are going to take. If Govt was so worried about farmers not getting money and middle men are reaping them, then they could have followed the Uzhavar Santhai model or some other model where by the actual farmer will be selling his harvest directly to the consumer rather than some one else. Instead of that asking some other middle man(wallmart) to take the profits looks .......

FDI Profits
A home truth is stated that FDI is meant for profits. It is a two way process. A country receiving investment also invests abroad. Singapore received in 2011, a cumulative FDI of $497 billion and invested $336 billion abroad. India received $ 232 billion and invested abroad $106 billion. The difference in mindset explains the disparity. India has to discard its medieval lumber in one clean sweep and opt for a vertical takeoff.

Foreign Direct Investment – FDI
Global FDI grew from a modest $ 24 billion in 1973 to a cumulative $ 20.660 trillion by end 2011. The spread was across 190 countries. An 860 fold increase in 39 years should spark curiosity in any mind about this explosive phenomenon. Whatever the effort at stopping it in its tracks with clichés like dollar imperialism, neo colonialism or exploitation has not worked. It may be noted that 75% of the investment has been in the first decade of this century. The second decade can promise only still higher exponential growth.
To get the picture clear a few figures of just four countries may be briefly examined. USA – By end 2011, the cumulative investment from the outset was $ 2.577 trillion. The increment added in 2011 was $ 234 billion. Facilities dependent on FDI engaged 5.7 million workers in lucrative employment. The average pay per worker per year at $ 70,000 was 30 % higher than the national average. The principal countries investing in the US are Germany, Japan, UK and France. A range of impelling factors have to obtain in a country to attract investment particularly from developed countries. The potential for exploitation is certainly not one among them. US stands 1st in attracting FDI. China – A late entrant in the competition for FDI had two missions to accomplish: To set infrastructure in place and to divest its political mind of ideological clogs. Deng performed the latter miracle and sent the world appropriate signals. The result was a cumulative stock of $ 712 billion by end 2011 with an inflow of $ 124 billion in that year. Capitalist countries have invested heavily with no abrasion to China’s political sensitivity. China ranks 1st in imports and exports valued at $ 3.564 trillion in 2011. Singapore – A country 1/220 the size of Tamil Nadu made the swiftest journey from third world to first. The cumulative FDI till 2011was $ 497 billion and that year recorded $ 35.6 billion, exceeding India’s by 1.6 billion. Singapore has for long been a shipping hub and an aviation hub in that region. Over a decade back she picked up Information Technology, Bio - Technology and Financial Services for concentrated attention and investment. One can surmise where the FDI is going. India – In mobilizing FDI, what India has achieved is a study in contrast. India’s cumulative FDI up to end 2011 was $ 232 billion or less than half that of Singapore. Of the 232 billion, exactly half is from Mauritius. A credible version is that it is ‘recycled’ or rerouted. The inflow hardly meets the need. The subsidies and freebies of Tamil Nadu are around $ 5 billion each year. With investible capital burnt this way and with FDI spurned, has the future got a chance? Much time is lost. The present and the future are in the grip of mental blocks. Added to that is democratic chaos – read, dread of the masses. The intelligentsia has to offer leadership and the politician of mediocre caliber and dubious character has to wither away. India’s well educated exceeds the total population of Singapore. A dedicated thread for FDI deliberations can be useful for sharp focus. MODS may create one. Last edited by Keeran; January 2nd, 2013 at 05:29 AM. |
