Do you have curtains?
Unless you live next to another skyscraper, one doesn't really need curtains when living high. Or do we? I for one don't have them.

Window treatments high up are also used to control the intensity of light, I guess.
For me, the preferred form of window treatments are Roman shades.

Curtains are essential, else your room becomes too bright in the morning while you are sleeping

I have roll curtains which kind of help to reduce light in the room but they still let quite a lot of light through, especially when the sun is shining straight at them. I would prefer to have another layer of curtains to black out the light completely. Since the sun rises so early over here in the summer (as early as 04:00), curtains are pretty much essential, at least in the bedroom...

Very heavy curtains that make my bedroom pitch-black.

I have all sorts of things covering my windows
![]() I have curtains to soften/disperse the sunlight. Otherwise it would just be too bright inside with the sun shining directly in the room (I have huge windows). I open them only on rainy days, or sometimes in the winter to let the sun heat up the room. For completely blocking out the sun in the bedroom, I have outside roller blinds, like this ![]() I do recommend them for those of you having problem with the sun waking them up, if you can install them on your building. In the living room, we have shutters for shade in the summer. And on the balcony.... now that would really be off topic. |

I would also need them for keeping the sun out of my bedroom. I don't know yet if I will buy some for my living in my new apartment.

There is no need for curtains if a window has the right orientation (i.e: facing north in the northern hemisphere) and if the unit is high enough with no nearby highrises.
At the end it's all a matter of personal preferences.

in italy we mainly do not have curtains: every singule window of every italian house has got roller blinds
![]() and i HATE that ![]() and we largely use these in elder buildings: (two examples) ![]() ![]() ...and everything similar or connected to this two kind of window covers In some cases (for very modern or historical buildings) we have windows without any external coverage Curtain walls are rare, I think we never use them for residential buildings but only offices, towers etc. the quality of cladding and curtain walls of this latter kind of building is quite always very high in italy; the worst type of cover (IMO: not elegant, ugly)is roller blinds but we sadly have them everywhere! |

We have curtains and blinds. We have them in the bedrooms to stop the sun shining in and in the rest of the rooms as we live in an old creepy house surrounded by trees and when they are open its really creepy haha

Curtains are not just pieces of cloth to keep out the sun or peeking eyes, they can also have a purely (or primarily) aesthetic function. A living room, even very nicely decorated ones, can look better still (as in much more cozy) with nice curtains, especially with a nice lighting scheme, either closed or open.
I need curtains because I live on the 3rd floor, but I didn't pick just some random ones - I went with nice, thick, off white ceiling-to-floor curtains that really add something extra (well, at least imho, but in the end that's the only thing that matters... )

I decided I need something to keep the sun out in the morning, but as the facade of the building is tilting inward I don't want something to be hanging down straight from the ceiling. Does anyone have any design ideas for this?
