Over 400 runners will take part in the extraordinary performance, activating specially designed, individual light suits to bring the urban landscape to life. Each night, runners will animate the canal banks, bridges and public spaces around The Lowry, IWM North (part of Imperial War Museums) and MediaCityUK, home of the University of Salford and BBC North, as they move in choreographed patterns set to a specially commissioned audio accompaniment.

I was walking past the old @home units in the Lowry Outlet yesterday and noticed some activity inside. I peered through the window but it seems that it has nothing to do with a new tennant moving in. There were lots of boxes with "Speed of Light" written on them. It seem they are using the units as a temporary means for this:

It was mentioned earlier in this thead. As I said earlier, I saw them testing out the light suits last month and it looked really fantastic.This is exactly the right type of event that Salford Quays needs to host more of. The Quays really lends itself well to these kinds of public art projects.

And it was good. Would like to know the system they used to co-ordinate all of the LEDs.

Also, the Watersports Centre has had additional white metal fencing constructed around the little jetty into Ontario Basin. The aim seems to be to create a place where they can leave equipment set up on a more permanent basis; most notably a new motorised tow system for wakeboarding. Saw some people using it last week and it looks fantastic fun! Two big jumps set up in the basin too.

Really wasn't sure where to put this. I must admit that the line up of stalls looks quite impressive. It looks nearly as good as the Manchester food festival. Worth a look this weekend. I have noticed the stalls are all out and ready to trade from tomorrow. Hope the weather stays fine for them.

I went to the Lowry Gallery today and was surprised at just how busy the food festival was!! Loads of stalls selling a variety of stuff.

That's really refreshing to see. It really is incredible how some of the simplest and traditional events can be the biggest draw. The Quays suits being busy, hopefully it will be more so in the future!

Major mixed-use Salford scheme blocked

A major mixed-use scheme planned at Salford Quays has been thrown out by the government amid fears it would "unacceptably hamper" the area's development.

Huddersfield-based cash and carry chain Batleys had been hoping to build two hotels, mixed-use accommodation comprising 755,000 sq ft of office, 12,350 sq ft of leisure and 15,275 sq ft of retail space, up to 75 apartments, a medical centre and a 1,331 space multi-storey car park.

Batleys appealed against Salford City Council's non-determination of the original outline application which then went before a public inquiry last autumn and was rejected.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles has now agreed with the inquiry inspector and decided the appeal should be dismissed and planning permission refused.

The project would have been built on land Batleys owns off Ohio Avenue close to MediaCity.

The site is 6.6 acres and currently has a surface level car park and 100,100 sq ft single-storey cash and carry warehouse.

Batleys had requested that the secretary of state reduce the office space within the plan by 25 per cent, down to 556,400 sq ft, but this was dismissed as "inappropriate" without a proper consultation.

In his ruling, Pickles wrote: "The significance of Salford Quays to the local, regional and national economy is not in doubt but that makes it all the more important to maximise the effective and efficient use of the opportunities that remain.

"Granting planning permission for the appeal scheme now, albeit with the reduced level office floorspace proposed by the appellants, would unacceptably hamper the development of Salford Quays.

"Although (there is) potential for further development, the local infrastructure – particularly local highways and public transport – is a constraint.

"The development or redevelopment of sites needs to be co-ordinated to ensure the appropriate infrastructure is in place."

Batleys had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
