I don't mind what they are doing there, the structures they are leaving look more like art installations than Gas Towers. I like the bronze finish. |

Those 'council blocks' are designated a conservation area and several are grade-II listed.

![]() I'm actually inclined to agree with DJ on this one. That's by far the nicest and most successful council estate in London, and if the council were to replace those blocks with new council housing the result would be much, much worse in most regards. |

Hear hear. And when they were built, wasn't all of their heating provided from run-off boiled water from the power station itself? There's a symbiotic relationship between Battersea Power Station and Churchill Gardens, and they represent some of the best mid-century social housing in London. Some of the best mid-century housing, period, in fact.

Damn right, I think that they are great examples of Post-war housing and their setting by the river make them stand out even more. It's not all bad from that period!

I do find it (even as a Leeds United fan) a shame that the Power Station wasn't earmarked for the new Chelsea stadium. The atmosphere within with the steep sided stands would have been utterly amazing. Darn.

wouldn't call it the best. Lillington gardens down the road integrates itself far better into the historical street scape than Churchill gardens. Aesthetically, the development is of course a product of its time, it is a mess. Having said that the materials used are quite nice, it's only redeeming feature in terms of looks in my opinion.

Churchill Gardens is great social history and was groundbreaking for its time. Just a shame it looks like all the other shite of the period, and it's right on the showcase riverfront.
Lets be honest, if this was in Peckham or Elephant we would have all been baying for its destruction by now. ![]() image hosted on flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Its currently plagued by gang violence despite being in wealthy old Pimlico, the most recent being the high profile murder 16 year old Hani Keir, picked at random, stabbed multiple times and disembowelled by ten people.
