Police assistance centre proposed for Technopark Commissioner to hold meeting with all stakeholders soon Last October, an eight-member gang trespassed into the ‘high-security’ Technopark campus here and nearly beat to death a youth who testified in court against the main suspects in a gangland murder case. The mafia style hit-and-run operation, which involved spotters, trackers, assailants on motorbikes, and a back-up squad to facilitate their escape, caused quite a flutter in the State IT hub, which employed more than 10,000 people. The target was a local youth who chauffeured an IT professional’s car. In a simulated seaborne terrorist attack on a high-value land target in November, three ‘armed’ operatives made landfall at an isolated stretch of the shoreline here, foxed the police, and infiltrated the ‘well guarded’ Technopark campus to plant a ‘bomb’ there at rush hour. The police on Saturday said that both these incidents have prompted them to conduct a security audit of the campus at the earliest. WEAK FENCING They have found the perimeter fencing of the campus to be weak and porous. The security personnel and infrastructure on the Technopark campus were also found to be wanting. They feel that they do not have enough background information on scores of persons employed in restaurants and other public utilities on the campus. Officials said City Police Commissioner P. Vijayan was scheduled to hold a meeting of Technopark authorities and other stakeholders there to start a ‘police assistance centre’ as a first step towards ensuring 24-hour police presence on the campus. HELP TO BE SOUGHT The police will also seek the help of IT firms and the government to establish security cameras and electronic perimeter fencing to insulate the campus as best as possible from terrorist threats and sabotage attempts. They will also adopt ‘situation crime prevention methods,’ such as managing parking in such a way that a car bomb explosion will do only minimum damage to life and property. Security check points will be re-arranged to give watchmen and the police better access control. The police will encourage Technopark employees to hold regular fire drills and disaster management exercises, such as mass casualty evacuation, as their counterparts in developed countries did. Electrical safety of the buildings and campus power grid will be ensured. The police said fundamentalist organisations were increasingly using cyberspace for training, fundraising, propaganda, recruitment, data mining, and coded communication. The police were also concerned about the possible presence of Left wing extremists and ‘professional’ revolutionaries, in the IT sector. Hence, future policing initiatives will have a cyber forensic element. An official said the Kazhakuttam and Vattapara police stations were likely to be brought under the jurisdiction of the city police as soon as it became a Metropolitan Commissionerate. Technopark casts a safety net
Technopark campus may soon have prepaid autorickshaws for women to travel safely. Senior Business Development Manager, Technopark, M. Vasudevan told The Hindu that this was among the initiatives being planned to provide better security to the IT park’s employees. The suggestions came from Prathidhwani, a socio-cultural organisation of Technopark employees, which had organised a campaign for women’s security recently on the campus. The other suggestions are a three-digit telephone helpline, police aid post on the campus, regular patrolling near the main gate, compulsory cab services for women employed after 6 p.m., proper verification of ID cards, and extension of Tech Express (special bus service by Technopark and the KSRTC) till 10 p.m. Around 3,500 Technopark employees signed the suggestions. Representatives of Prathidhwani submitted the proposal along with online signatures to Technopark officials on Wednesday. According to Rajeev Krishnan, secretary of Prathidhwani, the campaign provided women an opportunity to speak about the security needs on the campus. “We held talks with the Mayor and Corporation officials about the autorickshaw service,” Mr. Vasudevan said. More tech incubators for Kerala
Five new Technology Business Incubators by the Thiruvananthapuram-based Technopark-Technology Business Incubator (T-TBI) are on the anvil to bolster entrepreneurship and innovation among youngsters. This will take the total number of TBIs in the State to 11. T-TBI managing director K.C. Chandrasekharan Nair told*"The Hindu"that new TBIs will be operational in one-and-a-half years. “The proposals will receive the in-principle approval of the National Advisory Committee shortly,” he said. While the TBI proposed at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) will incubate companies dealing in information technology and bio-technology as well, the thrust area will be hardware. “It will be the first of its kind incubator for core hardware products,” Mr. Nair said. Cusat Vice-Chancellor Ramachandran Thekkedath said he was confident and upbeat about the proposed TBI in spite of space constraints. This will be the third incubator in Kochi, the other two being the Start-up Village at Kinfra Park and the agro-business incubator at the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology. *Funds not a problem* Funding for TBIs was not a problem thanks to the Union government’s Department of Science and Technology (DST), which funds up to 50-60 per cent of the total project cost, Mr. Nair said. The IEDC (Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre) at the Amal Jyothi College of Engineering at Kanjirappally in Kottayam district will be elevated to rural technology-based TBI. The elevation comes in the wake of the IEDC’s success in incubating five companies for four years together, one of the conditions subject to which the DST provides Rs. 45 lakh for five years under the IEDC programme, Mr. Nair said. The Technopark TePP (Technopreneur Promotion Programme) Outreach Centre at Care Keralam, a Koratty-based Ayurveda consortium, will also be converted into an Ayurveda-centric TBI. The remaining two TBIs will come up at Thiruvalla - a medical TBI at Pushpagiri Medical College, and a bio-science and bio-technology-based incubator at Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies. Besides, the NRI-TBI announced at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be inaugurated at Infopark next month. Mr. Nair said that companies successfully incubating from the TBIs will be given preferential treatment at IT Parks in the State. “T-TBI will organise a reverse pitching this April whereby venture capital firms will come scouting for innovative start-ups worthy of funding rather than the other way around. This will enable start-ups to focus on the creative side instead of being bogged down by funding concerns. At present, a start-up may invest months in an effort to get the backing of a venture capital firm only to be rejected outright at the end,” Mr. Nair said. About 10 venture capital firms from Bangalore and Mumbai are expected to participate. T-TBI has another novel initiative up its sleeve, as it gears up to organise a first of its kind fair exclusively for start-ups, Kerala Start-up Fair, 2013, on February 28. The product start-ups will be given space to exhibit their products while service-oriented start-ups can also showcase their strengths and expertise. Already 23 start-ups from across the State have registered for the fair. “Investors can enter in to agreements with start-ups of their choice at the one-day fair itself. The fair will be made in to an annual affair and will be held at destinations across the State,” Mr. Nair said. Source - http://m.thehindu.com/news/states/ke....google.com%2F |

Technology Business Incubator promoted company create online repository for engineering courses
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 16-member team of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut is creating an online repository of subject-specific class notes and assignments for engineering courses of premier institutes across the country. The first-of-its-kind initiative in Kerala is promoted by the Technology Business Incubator with the support of the central department of science and technology (DST) and micro small and medium enterprises (MSME).
The team, led by third-year electrical and electronics engineering students Aditya Maheswari and Jagadish Manohar, have launched the initiative on website Jugaadlabs.org.in with the support of NIT alumnus and mentor Prakash Shetty, who is also the founder of Gasotech India. "We have registered Jugaadlabs.org.in as a company with the MSME department. We have uploaded content on the five subject branches at NIT Calicut - electrical and electronics, biotech and mechanical engineering and partially civil and chemical engineering. With the support of College of Engineering, Trivandrum (CET) students, we plan to upload their institute-specific subject content by Feb-end," Aditya said. "Class notes taken by top students in the class are crosschecked through content management systems on desktops with server support from the TBI. We upload the content designed for file sharing through the internet utility of Dropbox. They have given us 50 GB free space to upload content. The website already has an audience of 1,500 regular users and is accessed by 60% of NIT Calicut residents," he said TBI manager Preethi M said they offer infrastructure, technology and legal support to startup incubators. "We promote student entrepreneurship by giving them all facilities and regular mentorship training programmes. It would take some more time for the incubator company to be approved by the selection committee of the TBI and once approved, they will get a seed fund grant of up to Rs 25 lakh or soft loan that requires no security," she said. TBI supports 15 incubator companies functioning within NIT campus and 22 outside, she said.
