So if they want to make the entire new terminal including both piers operational by end of 2014, they will have to demolish Jari Mari soon, as in before mid 2013. Because it will take 3 months to demolish and clean up, a year to build SE pier and 3 month to operationalize it. Optimistically speaking that is. I hope they do it sooner otherwise some stupid election code of conduct will come into play.

Hey,
I have 2 questions,
1. some pages back I saw the shortened version of the SE pier. In the recent article the full SE pier is shown, which is it???
2. Can the T2 handle A380's???

Yes it can.
The terminal has been designed for much bigger planes.

Hehe... the plan is to have both piers operational by 2015.. not 2014

True.

Also, the SE pier can be built without demolishing a single hutment! The stucture will lie completely within the current airport boundary. The encroached land across the mithi river is to be used only for a taxiway around the pier and for the remote parking bays. As such, work on the SE pier can begin immediately after the SW pier is inaugurated. Simultaneously, whenever the encroached plot across the river is cleared, the river will be covered over and tarmac will be laid.

Last I heard they had reduced them to 2 from 3. This is the first time I'm hearing about 4. Maybe increased forecasts + Bilateral amendments for EK/LH/SQ. Who knows.

Yeah, the pier itself is completely within the current airport footprint, it's the taxiways that allow aorcraft to taxi around the pier that will occupy the currently encroached land. Not easy in India (then again, what is, right?).

Classic shot Rutvij!
Yako, Thats more likely the apron control building near/on the current international terminal. Ill be able to take terminal pics only this time as my flight departs at around 3 am. The New Doha airport hasn't been open yet.

Hey Rutvij, when did u hear of the A380 being scaled down to 2? wasn't it planned to have 2 A380 gates per pier?

I would be surprise if they have only 2 Gates @ CSIA suitable for A380's aircraft. If they do, then its very short sight planning. Looking around the globe, other IMP airports have created or planned for few A380's gates on their terminal. I know, that we can not compare Mumbai to Dubai, but Dubai have created a whole additional separate terminal for A380's. To compete with other nearby hub, they have to have a few A380's gate, as we are not sure when the NMIA will start. Sooner or later GOV of India will give permission to allow A380 in India.

^Emirates has ordered more than 90 388s. Even then, one whole concourse dedicated to that plane will not be enough to handle all those aircraft, thus the need for the new World Central.

For BOM, around 3 to 4 388 gates is quite good for now. Sure BOM will have 388s once the govt. allows it, but I doubt it will require anywhere near the levels of DXB, or even LAX for that matter.

At least BOM will have 388 gates, there are still airports whose administrations thought they would never need 388 gates, but EK has been the wildcard in that respect. It started DFW service last year, and now it wants to begin 388 service, up from the current 77L. Guess what? No 388 gate is available. So EK will either have to wait until DFW completes upgrading a gate in Terminal D, or EK will have to begin a second daily nonstop.

Has anyone noticed how the New Abu Dhabi airport has a design strikingly similar to Mumbai's, or is it just me? It deffinitely is an x shape:

This has come up before....the master plan for both the airports was done by the same firm Skidmore Owings and Merrill.....hence the similarity!!

I saw that a few months ago on some website and wondered why did SOM not think of that design for Mumbai airport ? It looks way better. Mumbai's airport seems to have a highly minimalistic design compared to this one. btw cost isn't a factor if you think so for the design as Abu Dhabi one costs just 2.27 billion $ which may escalate to 3 billion $ and Mumbai has already escalated to that point.

The design for Abu Dhabi airport was done by Kohn Pedersen Fox based on SOM's master plan.....SOM's design was not accepted for the same reason you mentioned..."highly minimalistic design"!!
