NIT chairman Pravin Darade told TOI that DMRC had suggested two possible routes - North-South and East-West. "The North-South route will start from Kamptee Road Transport Plaza and go up to Mihan. Good News ..!!

DMRC plans 42km metro rail for Nagpur

NAGPUR: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has submitted the much-awaited detailed project report (DPR) of city's metro rail. It has proposed construction of two routes stretching over 42km and costing over Rs 10,000 crore.

After a presentation before guardian minister Shivajirao Moghe, the metro rail's special purpose vehicle Nagpur Mass Transport Company (NMTC) will submit the DPR to the state government which will forward it to the central government for budgetary provisions.

DMRC's presentation to Moghe and NMTC was scheduled on Monday, but postponed due to urgent meeting of cabinet's tally committee on annual budget at Mumbai. Expressing his delight over completion of DPR, Moghe told TOI the metro rail project will play a vital role in Advantage Vidarbha.

"Metro rail will take the city's public transport system to a new level. DF government is very keen to make the metro rail a success in the city. The budgetary provisions will play a crucial role as the project requires huge funds," he said.

Confirming that DMRC is ready with the DPR, NIT chairman Praveen Darade said DMRC has proposed two viable routes with total length of 42km. "Work is expected to begin in the current calendar year if everything goes according to plan," he said.

Sahara city turning into a ghost town ..!!

NAGPUR: The Sahara City Township off Wardha Road looks like a ghost town these days. Much before SEBI issued orders to attach the company's assets, problems had dogged this project that was coming up in these 107 acres of land.

The township that is half built has just a handful of inhabitants. "I came to live here recently and haven't come across any neighbour all these days. Of course, they say there are some others living in other buildings," said a retired employee from Ballarpur Industries Limited ( BILT), who recently shifted here.

Banks have stopped lending money to buy a house in Sahara City almost a year ago. Sources in the realty business said that many buyers have cancelled their deals due to delayed possession and other complaints. The construction of Sahara City township that began in 2007, continues at a slow pace in the light of several controversies.

Work on two routes to start together ................

NAGPUR: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has recommended that work on both north-south and east-west corridors of Nagpur metro rail should begin simultaneously to attract commuters. It submitted the detailed project report (DPR) to Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) on Monday. This is biggest difference in the project as proposed by DMRC and that by state government and L&T Ramboll. The latter had decided to start work on north-south corridor first.

Addressing the media, guardian minister Shivajirao Moghe said the total length of the two corridors was 39.81km and there will be 37 stations. "Two depots have been proposed at Mihan and off Hingna Road. The Hingna Road land belongs to Airport Authority of India ( AAI) and ministry of defence. MP Vilas Muttemwar will take up this issue."

Minister of energy Rajendra Mulak said the first corridor will be from Automotive Square on Kamptee Road to Mihan. "Its length is 21.6km and will have 18 stations. The second corridor is from Prajapati Nagar (east of Wardhaman Nagar) to Lokmanya Nagar, Hingna Road. It is 18.2km long and will have 19 stations."

I think there are too many stations proposed. almost 1 every k.m.!!

Can't Nagpurian walk even 1 k.m. !! It could save crore's of rs if they are built 1.5 or 2 k.m. apart...

I agree with siddhant here, for 1 or 2 km ride there is a well established bus service. They should have reduced the no. of stations to be built.

As per Hitvada the list of metro stations included BOI shankar nagar sq. and then LAD square. These two squares are hardly 500-700 mtrs. apart.

That's really a weird interpretation of having metro stations every 1 km!
in all metro systems in world, or at least in india, metro stations are on average 1 km apart. check any route in delhi or the upcoming one in mumbai. there are places where stations are not even a km apart. Does that mean, even Mumbaikars or Delhiites can't walk even 1 km?

now for the question of saving money, well that can be done by not even building a metro in first place! so the point is, there are some guidelines and conventions for a system to be called mass rapid transit system, and having stations close enough is part of it. And it is not a Nagpurkar saying that "Hey I wan't a station every 1 km, because I am lazy"! it is DMRC who proposed that after a year long study analyzing a lot of data.

If by placing stations 1 km apart is not doing any good in terms of passenger traffic, then it is a bad idea. Similary, if by placing stations 2 km apart, the metro is going to loose a big chunk of passengers, then it is definitely not a good idea... In short, the project should be viable.
