Probably too hot, humid, rains too much in summer, too many mosquitoes...

Also there's too many height restrictions on buildings and i heard somewhere that much of the land suitable for development is restrained by mangroves, wetlands, marshlands. Rural areas are predominantly king of land as there isno need to keep building housing sprawl everywhere. Not enough jobs etc to need to do that. My thoughts anyway.

My thoughts of why people are being driven away from Darwin and why it might continue to struggle.
- Too hot
- Cost of living is very, very high
- Public transport is in adequate in both the city and especially the suburbs. Its unusable and unthinkable for the vast majority of the population.
- Excessive problems with and non-productivity of itinerants
- Ongoing cycles of corruption in public and private sectors. Many vested interests.
- Youth crime, including petty vandalism, is visible and common.
- The NT PS is still under-productive with a lot of dead wood being carried.
- A lack of mountains - poor feng shui.
- A lack of craft breweries and their outlets generally, especially outside of the city.
- If the government is scared off by debt, big-picture, long term investments in new industries will be crippled. They need short and long term plans for big vision projects to exploit potential growth. I don't know what these would be I don't research this stuff, but I would presume:
  • big investments into NT tourism;
  • development of solar generation facilities and research bodies;
  • intensive growth in the cooperation on the development of Dili and Timor including construction, knowledge sharing, infrastructure development and more;
  • tropical and desert research and knowledge;
  • become the unequivocal hub of Indigenous knowledges;
  • increased defence facilities (outside of Darwin);
  • the absolute forefront on bridging the gap techniques, tactics, strategies and research;
  • and attracting high quality teachers;
I'd sign off on "good-debt" on solid business cases for any of these.

Mosquitoes and rains are not an issue, I think.

THE centrepiece of the $400 million Gwelo real estate and shopping centre development, Coolalinga Central, will officially open this weekend.

One of the anchor tenants, Kmart, and a number of specialty stores have already been trading for the past seven days.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner will do the official honours at 11am on Saturday.

About 85 per cent of the shopping centre has been leased to business.

The centre will have a fitness centre, doctors, fashion, independent bakery, butcher and a food court in addition to the anchor tenants, Coles and Kmart.

There are still some concerns regarding traffic in the area, given an estimated 17,000 cars will pass the front of the shopping centre each day.

The NT Government has released three options for the public to comment on for a long-term solution to the traffic issues.

A spokesman for Gwelo said this work would ensure that when the whole centre was complete, the traffic flows would be catered for in a safe and efficient manner.

NT Business Review understands businesses in the area, the developers and residents have been frustrated at the delays in solving the traffic issue as it has been raised repeatedly over a long period of time.

Stage one of the development is the 35,000sq m shopping centre with a 22,000sq m let nettable area.

Gwelo also ensured the centre’s carparks accommodated its rural clientele, opting for 1000 undercover, oversized bays that are wider and higher than normal.

The 5004sq m Kmart showcases the store’s new layout that is being rolled out nationally.

A Kmart spokesman said the new layout added to the commitment to improve customers’ shopping experience.

“The new and elevated store layout provides locals with all of Kmart’s coloured product worlds, including clothing, toys and home,” the spokesman said.

“Noticeable updates will include central self-served check outs, wider aisles for easy wheelchair and pram access, as well as bolder graphics for navigation and a convenient shopping experience.”

The next six months will see a further row of restaurants and a tavern opened along the front of the centre.

Stages two and three are already attracting major interest.

The Darwin Luxury Hotel project down on the Waterfront should be commencing in August or September, pending all environmental approvals having been completed. There should be a flurry of activity once it starts.

Casuarina Square food court to undergo $8.7m revamp

THE dining revolution at Casuarina Square is continuing with an $8.7 million upgrade of the shopping centre’s food court to be unveiled in September.

Work commenced yesterday on the upgrade which is set to include a number of yet to be confirmed new-to-Darwin eateries.

The renovation will include a fresh layout, furniture, large digital screen and a children’s playground.

A sculpture titled “Canopy” by artist Catriona Stanton will hang above the food court, which draws inspiration from Darwin’s natural environment.

It consists of leaves and portals created in lightweight plywood, with perforated forms which allow light to shine through.

The large format digital screen will display content relevant to the community, including major sporting events.

The upgrade comes less than a year since the opening of the shopping centre’s alfresco dining The Quarter.

The $34 million development included 12 restaurants such as burger chain Grill’d and Hogs Breath Cafe.

Centre manager Mardi Ashkine said the new food court would create a warm community atmosphere.

“We are pleased to be bringing an exciting new dining experience to Darwin, with huge upgrades coming to the food court,” she said.

“Building on the elements that makes Darwin unique, the refreshed food court will reflect the local environment and complement this area.

“Casuarina Square developed an exciting alfresco dining area with the introduction of The Quarter, and we are looking forward to impressing our customers once again with this upgrade to the indoor food court area. We can’t wait to debut the new food court in September.” Ms Ashkine said the first part of the project was to replace the escalators to the underground car park. She said the escalators would be closed for six weeks.

“At the moment it’s business as usual at Casuarina Square, with all works being conducted outside of trading hours until we reveal the brand new food court.”

The NT Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics is calling for planning and initial design consultancy for a new museum which will showcase Indigenous art and heritage.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner confirmed that the historic Old Hospital site would be preserved for the Territory public and form the site of a major new Museum of the Northern Territory (NT).

The Territory Labor Government made it clear that the current economic circumstances needed to be investing in the Territory - investing in and creating jobs directly through construction and indirectly by lifting the NT tourism product. According to Mr Gunner, not only will this museum embrace our own sense of identity it will attract people from around the nation and the world and this will bring millions of additional dollars to our economy.

Budget Boost:

The Northern Territory 2017-18 Budget outlined $100 million in new spending commitments by the Gunner Government to rejuvenate the Darwin CBD including finishing State Square, moving part of the Charles Darwin University campus to the CBD and a new museum at the old hospital site.

The government is investing $50 million into a museum at Myilly Point that will create hundreds of jobs through construction, and by supporting the tourism sector. It will attract visitors from around the nation and internationally, providing a boost to the NT economy.

According to Tourism and Culture Minister Lauren Moss, an important part of this concept design process will involve engaging with Territorians in determining the final shape of the museum. For the first time Territorians will have a museum that tells the 50,000 year old history of Darwin – from the world's oldest continuous culture through to the frontline of WWII and the modern day. They want to the Territorians to be a part of this process.

Darwin CBD to be transformed:

The project is part of a planned transformation of Darwin’s CBD into a world-class tourist and cultural destination. Other plans include overhauling State Square and bringing student accommodation into the centre.

This tender signals a significant step forward for the Museum of the Northern Territory. The museum will be a landmark building for Darwin and the Northern Territory, creating a building for the future that celebrates our unique history and culture. Ms Moss also highlighted that the new building concept will incorporate heat mitigation technologies and greening and energy efficient design both internal and external, connecting the building to the landscape. A key requirement for the successful tenderer is for open space and a net increase of green space.

Project Timeline:

Stage One works of the new museum are anticipated to begin in the 2019-20 financial year. A concept design for the new museum will be based on extensive public consultation and stakeholder input.

The consultant will work with local residents on how the new Darwin Museum and parkland should best contribute to a vibrant local community. This consultation will run in parallel with the 10-year Museum Master Plan consultation which will get underway in the coming weeks.

The 10-year Museum Master Plan will provide a framework and direction for the Northern Territory’s investment in cultural infrastructure in Darwin and Palmerston, including museums, galleries, libraries, art centres and keeping places.

More Palmerston buildings. Palmerston CBD is 20-21kms from Darwin CBD.

This is an office building which is right next door to Rydges Palmerston Hotel. It is called Boulevard Plaza, I believe it is under construction. There's a few small photos of it on the net.
