Shumen | Шумен

Shumen, is a city with population of 103,016 in the Northeastern part of Bulgaria.

It is a natural geographic center of the capitals and cultural centers of the old medieval Bulgarian Kingdoms - Pliska, Preslav and Madara. The city sprang from an old Roman and Byzantine fortress, overlooking a passage from the Danubian plain to the mountain passes of the Balkan mountain. Its location made it the cite of the largest Turkish garrison town during the years of the rule of the Ottoman Empire over nowadays Bulgaria. Shumen was a thriving economic and cultural center during the period of the Bulgarian National Renaissance ("Vuzrazhdane") in the 19th century. Shumen was the hometown of the first Bulgarian theater and the first Bulgarian orchestra.

Today Shumen is the hometown of the "Konstantin Preslavski" University and the fourth largest public library in Bulgaria.

Shumen Fortress

Just 3 kilometers west of the modern town Shumen lay the ruins of what use to be a great Bulgarian fortress. The first settlement on the site is of Thracian origin and dates to XII c.BC. Later on it fell under the power of Rome. At that time the first fortifications were made. Still, it could not withstand the invasion of Slavic and Avarian tribes. The magnificent Shumen Fortress was build up from the ruins by Khan Omurtag, who ruled between 814 and 831 AC the founded by Khan Asparuh 150 years ago Bulgarian state. The fortress played a vital role in the history of Bulgaria. In 11 th century the fortress was conquest by Byzantine, but regained back with the restoration of the Bulgarian State. It was in fact one of the few strongholds to resist the first wave of the Ottoman invasion but in 1388 the sultan Murad I forced it to surrender to the Ottoman Turks. After Władysław Warneńczyk's unsuccessful crusade in 1444, the city was destroyed by the Ottomans and moved to its present location.

Very nice pictures!

One question:
This is my favorite architectural style in Bulgaria. I'd consider it a cross of Art Deco and Constructivism, with Neo-Medieval Bulgarian hints. But since it's not clear-cut, any other opinions? Have you seen buildings that look like that in other countries?

I'll have to admit, it's a pretty cool building, although it doesn't really leave its mark on the mind, because I could walk past it without noticing.

I wouldn't call it art deco
I think the idea of a neo-medieval concept is better suited for it

The mayor of Shumen Krassimir Kostov plans the fortress to be restored into its original size.

The initial sum for the implementation of the project is around 416 000 EUR. The Shumen local government is ready to spend 63 000 EUR. The remaining part of the money could come from Europe under the program for preservation of the European cultural heritage.

It is expected the south-east tower of the fortress to be turned into a museum and the walls to be rebuilt to 4-5 m height.

There will also be lights and music show for the tourists just as in Tzarevetz.

The project approval is expected in the next few months, pointed out from the Shumen municipality.

Always wondered why in Bylgariia we don't have our castles rebuilt. guess we wanted to be original cause everybody else does it and again validates our political rebeliousness.
