Orlandoans In the News

A shout out today to two Orlandoans who have arrived at two very different slices of the big time:

Sherwood Brown is a guard on the Cinderella FGCU team that is the first 15th seed to reach the NCAA Sweet 16 basketball tournament. He is a graduate of Olympia High.

Julia Pierson, President Obama's choice to lead the Secret Service, is a native of the City Beautiful and a UCF grad whose rookie position as an officer was with OPD (the northeast district including Lake Eola).

Congrats to both, good luck and it's good to see our natives making it big on the national stage!

Congrats to Sherwood Brown. Now, have a bad game against UF when you play each other in the Sweet 16.

Some of our top chefs and bartenders featured in this article about Orlando for grownups in the NY Post (glad to see someone besides the Gray Lady discovering us!)

that was a great article, from Disney related places to the Waldorf, to the local bars and restaurants in Winter Park et al. Vince Vaughn. Awesome.

BTW, the Waldorf has a fantastic chef named Francis. Hilton has sent him to many of its properties because of his expertise.

It seems that an Orlando neighborhood is featured regularly in Top 10 lists. Just wait until the Phil relocates to Bumby - the Milk District is going to have an interesting mix of geek and chic.

This is cool but They said Ivanhoe is south of downtown.

Jacobs makes it official, files for Orange mayor re-election

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/...0,5945730.post

And so it begins. Now that Orange has shown quite convincingly that it is a majority Democratic county in the last couple of election cycles, the last bastion of Republican strength, the County Commission, should theoretically at least begin to fall. Teresa, of course, was aided mightily in 2010 by Bill Segal's campaign (dare I call it the worst campaign of the century?) Anyway, interesting that's she's already gearing up - about 17 months out is early for a local race.

I don't think she'll need a miracle to get re-elected. I do think she has been a letdown, not only for the Orlando / Orange County relationship, but also as a replacement to Crotty, who while I didn't necessarily support, at least showed a willingness to think big and bold. None of this "we are cheap and I like it that way" nonsense.
