#Proposed: Marriott Hotel Expansion - 26st/107m/hotel

The Marriott Hotel Brisbane has submitted a DA to expand the existing hotel.

The new extension will include a new podium and signage and an extention to the restaurant. 1972m2 will be added to the overall hotel.

DA: A003064950

Hotel Owner: Commonwealth Properties Hotel Fund

Looks pretty good. Just shows that the Brisbane hotel market is crying out for more hotels.

Nice, looks pretty good, as long as they can be successful in getting it to blend into the existing art deco facade.

We need Empire Square (Westin) more than ever, shame we are left with the grocon scraps.

Hmmm...not sold on the extension to the tower, especially the view from the CBD looking towards the Valley (renders 2 and 4). It looks odd against the existing part of the building. The podium extension fits in much better.

That said, it may turn out to be a grower though, and might start to grow on me...

It's a much needed, very welcome extension though. We badly need more mid to high end hotel rooms.

Mmmm, don't know that I like it. Some angles make it look like a tacky add on and others don't look too bad...

Too lazy to search the DA number but how many new rooms will there be? Maybe around 30??

Yeah, that's kinda how I'm feeling about it too. Renders 1 and 3 look great, renders 2 and 4 not so much IMO.

I would have thought it would be a better outcome to team up with a developer and relocate the Marriott elsewhere. It seems to be a hell of a large cost for a slightly larger restaurant and 23 extra rooms, or even to help get the new Vision project off the ground.

Either that or a Marriott Boutique hotel in something like the Family services building on the corner of Elizabeth and George Streets.

doesn't seem to add much value to the site.

looks alright from some angles in the renders, but i wonder about the finished product.

Would of been far better as a right angled extension and wrapped 2 sides of the building.

I don't like it.

As some others have said, I'm not sure I like this extension. In the sense of both looks and value add. It looks a bit too much like an afterthought then something that is properly integrated, but it may grow on me.

For what it adds, I'm surprised it's worth the cost. However we desperately need more hotel space so anything is good.

The extension while costly will probably raise the reputation of the marriot however

so true. i agree. the more we can remove that blight of an era where salmon coloured buildings were seemingly popping up on every corner, the better.

Heres a little comparison pic I made. I think it looks pretty good, although I too am suprised that its feasible. A fairly complex project, for such a small amount of extra floor space. Would that be an extra two rooms per floor?

Personally, I don't mind the Marriott, even with the salmon colouring...it's by far the least offensive of the 'school of salmon' buildings down that way as far as I'm concerned.

I think the faux art deco design of the building is unique enough to pull it off.

Yeah I think its an interesting addition and look forward to it. If it is indeed 2x hotel rooms per floor that would mean around 50 additional hotel rooms.

Yes definitely agree. it is one of the few that actually work. It is also less "salmon" than many of the others.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with the rest of you. The extension looks OK. Nothing special, but not bad. And I really do like that it'll be one less beige wall, especially at such a prominent location, but I really don't know how the expense of it makes it feasible. For just one more room per floor, it seems almost extravagent for what you're getting out of it.
