Airports on artificial islands are usually constructed in sheltered waterbodies, not on the open seas, as would be the case at Trivandrum.

IMO the priority should be to acquire land for Terminals, aprons etc. Runway won't be saturated in the near future..

AIE to operate 40 extra flights

16 flights will be from Thiruvananthapuram

6 from Cochin and 14 from Kozhikode.

Air India Express (AIE), the low-cost arm of the national carrier Air India, is to operate 40 additional flights from Kerala and Delhi to Sharjah and back to clear the heavy rush during Onam. The flights, which can carry 186 passengers, will be operated from August 22 to September 4 from Thiruvananthpuram, Kochi, Kozhikode and Delhi international airports, airline sources said on Monday.

Of the 40 flights to Sharjah and back, 36 will be from the airports in the State. As many as 16 flights will be from Thiruvananthapuram, six from Cochin and 14 from Kozhikode. The AIE decision is expected to put pressure on the West Asia-based airlines that increase the fares during the season.

The airline has plans to operate services to other sectors in West Asia from the airports of the State to clear the rush of Non Resident Keralites and it depends on getting the slot in the airports in West Asian countries, airline sources added.

Future development of our city will be eastern part of our district i.e Kattakada, Kallara, Nedumangad,Neyyar etc etc because of sparsely populated area. So why cant try new green field airport near Kallara near Kilimanoor ?

may be that new winter schedule comes into effect from november onwards, but still booking is available from other airports that creates confusion. And booking is available from march 2018 onwards, no idea as to why it is like that

PSK might be able to throw light on this aspect

Wow. Just amazing. I wonder if Air India, Jet Airways, or other carriers will provide extra flights to Trichy or Cochin for Onum (Kerala New Year), especially for those from further afield. I mean, routing them via Abu Dhabi or Dubai would be great, but I was thinking like places including Bangkok, Singapore, or even London.

Rain

The Southwest Monsoon in Trivandrum has always been below the rest of the State. But more important is that Tvm gets a much higher share than the rest of the State, of the NE monsoon. The reason for this is that the Western ghats taper off to a lower elevation East of Trivandrum and so the rain bearing clouds coming from the Arabian sea pass oof into the Bay of Bengal, while the NE clouds cause rain on the Eastern side of the ghats and gives copious rains to Tamil Nadu. In Trivandrum we get a share of this rain. This is more important because before the dry summer months, it is the NE rains that ensures that the water bodies are filled.

The main challenge for developing, constructing, and maintaining such large structures as airports on artificial islands would be liquefaction. Basically, you have to have backup machinery to pump out excess water that could cause the airport island to sink once it runs full-time, and that you need a lot of additional utility pipes to keep the water flowing (e.g. water treatment plants, sewage plants, seawater reclamation...). Perhaps, if Trichy has suitable waves, those can be used to power the airport (think of Wave Power Plant -- perhaps this article would be helpful), independent from the rest of the electrical grid.

An alternate layout I believe makes better use of land:
