From what I have heard, these days it is a place for prostitutes and their clientele to go about with their business.

Its also not feasible to have such an expansive park in a city with all the problems of over-population. Land-grabbers will always have an eye to convert it to something else, whether houses or monuments, or both.

I think we need different ways for greening the city. That includes more roof-top gardens, more trees on the medians and on sidewalks and more canals.

I just noticed a fact,Puran Dhaka has both a Victoria Park and a Bahadur Shah Park. While I found it amusing I suspect most of the Sepoy Revolution Martyrs would be crying in their graves.

Which one are you referring to as "it"? Ramna Park? When was the last time you visited the place? I'm sure nefarious activities occur in the wee hours of the night however, it is a place for early morning and evening walkers/joggers, and a lot of families visit the place from late afternoon to early evening. DMP has brought it under surveillance and the restaurant near/on the lake has been reopened. The local municipal corporation and the police has cleaned up the place considerably.

Well, parks aren't established only to provide green space. More so, to provide a place for recreation.

Dhaka when it was built about 400 hundred years ago was a lot like Amsterdam and had lots of canals. Dholai khal used to be what it was...a khal. Makes sense because Bangladesh is a lot like Holland - another delta. It needs those canals back or else this city is f****d.

There needs to be a proper water-storage system during monsoon. Unfortunately, Dholai Khal just disappeared.

However, another khal - 'Kather pool' actually went underground - a road was built over it with a proper drainage system put in place under it.

I am glad that Hatirjheel hasn't been encroached. Lets hope that other 'khals' are recovered to save the city.
