" Shoppers today are looking not just for merchandise, but an experience. Gateway Theatre of Shopping will offer an element of "wow" instead of an element of "oh" one gets from an average shopping centre. It's about innovative architectural designs, retailers with fresh new ways to present their products and a tenant mix that will attract the widest audience possible" - Ian Watt, Old Mutual Properties Managing Director.

"We believe that Woolworths Gateway will reflect the fresh, bright personality of the centre and provide a whole new experience for shoppers" - Paul Simpson, Group Head of Real Estate Development for Woolworths.

"Gateway is set to break new ground in the application of the retail and leisure formula. Shoppers will not only clearly enjoy the new-style state-of-the-art Truworths store, but also the sociable experience that will be offered by the centre" - Tony Taylor, Deputy Managing Director of Truworths.

"Gateway will pioneer new concepts and tastes in dining. Our choice of restaurants and bars will offer shoppers the most exciting five-star combinations of tastes and flavours and will help position Durban as a cosmopolitan city with a reputation, rather like New York and Sydney " - Yael Shapiro, Retail Leasing Manager for Old Mutual Properties.

"There's no question that aesthetically this world-class line up that Gateway has put together is unlike anything else in the country. It has been very exciting to see this new wave emerge and to be a part of it" - Marcel Joubert, Chairman of The Platinum Group.

"Gateway for us will represent destination shopping in Durban. None of these stores exist in any other centre in Durban. Until Gateway there was no suitable location to launch brands which compete not with the local market, but with the international one" - Faizel Surtee, of The Surtees Group

"The tenant mix at Gateway will create shopping and entertainment on a scale never before seen in Africa. By including quality food and clothing retailers coupled with entertainment aspects like cineplexes, family and themed restaurants, high quality fashion outlets and numerous meeting places that embrace the outdoor environment. This will lead to more frequent visits by customers" - Mike Rodel General Manager, Gateway Theatre of Shopping.

"We see Gateway as a theatre, with our retailers as actors. The shopping centre will create the right stage for the actors to succeed, and work with them for the production to be attractive to patrons who ultimately determine its success" - Ian Watt, Old Mutual Properties Managing Director.

"Visitors to the main entertainment attractions at Gateway, including the cinemas, the Wave House, the Old Mutual/MTN ScienCentre, Fantasy Forest entertainment centre and Imax Theatre, together contributed 33% to the total annual shopper visits during 2003. The ScienCentre, the interactive science discovery centre at Gateway, had 35% more visitors than in 2002. The Wave House drew a record attendance for one day of almost 25 000 visitors on December 26 2003. " OMP Retail Executive Brent Wiltshire says the attendance records "highlight the linkage between retail and entertainment".

Commenting on the 2003 South African and Africa records set by Ster-Kinkor's movie attendance, whereby more than 1,4 million attended a movie at Ster-Kinekor Gateway during 2003, Wiltshire says, "this shows that movies and entertainment can be a major anchor to the retail experience, particularly since up to 70% of movie-goers end up spending money on other activities when visiting a shopping centre".

I remember as a kid sandton sun. I remember we came from israel, we just stood there looking at this place like its not real.. everything so glitsy and fancy, the huge waterfalls and fountains that was about 3 stories high (I donnu if its still there), then the hotel with the huge interior space and golden umbrellas - it was like you were in a startrek spaceship of luxury. I remember some other joburg malls like cresta center, which was later built up more, hydepark center, the walk (this open-air mall near sandton, dont remeber exact name),
But sandton was the best of them.. I remember there was dallas and dynasty on tv, and walking in sandton was like stepping into these riches..
I know that malls are very developed because its a secure place but the malls there are really something every tourist just stares at in amazement!
oh yes and tere was a train in cresta center!! it was co cool!!

in durban i remember this mall taht was designed to look lie a ship..
anyone know what im talking about??
I would love to see pictures of all these malls and see what has changed in them

Westgate Mall
Johannesburg

Wherever you are, we're just around the corner. With more than eighteen years of successful trading to its name, Westgate is renowned as the shopping mecca of the West Rand. Westgate is more than just a shopping centre; it is a complete experience, a meeting place, and a place where needs are fulfilled... where there is no shortage of space or parking. Quite unlike most other shopping centres in the region, almost all of Westgate is located on a single level, eliminating confusion and allowing glorious sunlight to brighten the entire interior.

With ever-increasing urbanisation of the area, and a flood of new young families attracted to the West Rand by a quality lifestyle, Westgate offers a number of attractions for all ages.

Paarl Mall (Due to open October 2005)
Paarl

The first 35000m² of the Paarl Mall regional shopping centre began construction in August last year.

75% of the space in this R220m phase of the project has already been taken up,with national national companies taking 70% of the space.

The development is a joint venture between Flanagan & Gerard Property Consultants, Spire Properties and Corovest-NIB Property Asset Managers.

Patrick Flanagan, MD of Flanagan & Gerard Property Consultants, says Paarl's consumer market will be "big enough to sustain regional shopping".

The primary market shoppers within a 10 to 20-minute drive of the mall would be Paarl, Wellington and Franschoek, while consumers could also be drawn from Worcester, Tulbagh, Montagu and Swartland, says Flanagan.

A total of R300000 will be spent upgrading the adjacent Paarl station to ensure it provides easy access for consumers.

The mall will take references from the contrasting architecture in Paarl Valley such as the Cape Dutch houses and more modern stone buildings. Construction will take about 14 months. The mall is scheduled to open for trading in October.

Vangate City
Athlone, Cape Town

A R300-million mixed-use precinct, including a shopping mall, residential units and a commercial offices, is being planned for the old Athlone golf course on the Cape Flats outside Cape Town.

According to Business Day, the development of the complex, to be called Vangate City, is expected to inject new economic life into an area that has long been neglected.

The 14-hectare development will be situated midway between Cape Town International Airport and the central business district along the N2 highway, and will serve Athlone and Langa township.

Economist Erwin Rode told Business Day that the development could rejuvenate the traditionally middle-class residential and commercial area of Athlone, which had seen its commercial business decline since 1994 because of competition.

Mustapha Murudker, chairman of the Vangate Development Company and consortium, told Business Day that the development would be anchored by a 28 000 square metre shopping centre with a Moroccan design theme.

It would also include about 400 residential units for people in the middle-income stream, as well as a commercial component.

"Vangate City will lead the charge in the revitalisation of amenities, improved general security and empowerment of individuals in one of the most promising consumer markets in the Western Cape", Murudker said

He added that a traditional market or "souk" would be established in the mall to allow emerging retailers to showcase specialist products like spices, foods and fabrics.

Colin Young, fund manager of Old Mutual's South African-listed property funds, told Business Day that he believed the Cape Flats area needed its own community shopping centre.

"With the emerging black middle class it makes a lot of sense", Young said. "The size sounds about right and the mixed-use component underpins the retail offering."

According to Business Day, Murudker's company has already started with the earthworks on the project, and plans to complete the shopping centre and 60 of the residential units by the end of September 2005.

I dislike shopping malls. Intensely. Give me a high street anyday!

But we don't have much choice in Joburg, and so my favourite would have to be Sandton City, for the sheer variety of stuff you can buy. And Rosebank/The Zone is always enjoyable.
