Curvaceous: Emerald Isle on The Strand is designed by Stefan Antoni
It's all eyes on the coast as schools close and tens of thousands of Gauteng ers set out on holiday. There will be new apartment developments to tempt them almost everywhere they go.
One of the most dramatic of these coastal developments is Emerald Isle, a high-rise block of flats being sold off-plan in The Strand on the Cape's False Bay beachfront near Somerset West. At 21 floors it will be tall enough to be the envy of many Johannesburg high-rise developers.
And to emphasise this point, it is being sold by Lynn Estates, the same agents who are selling the 23-floor Michelangelo Towers, Sandton CBD's tallest building. Trendy Cape Town architect Stefan Antoni is designing it. He is also responsible for Corner House, whose developers aim to offer the grandest residences in Johannesburg's old financial district.
Lynn Estate's Brett Petzer says that Emerald Isle is proof of the area's growing popularity. He predicts that the area will soon be South Africa's new Riviera. The old gentleman I saw at the water's edge more than 50 years ago would have been appalled if Petzer had told him that.
I was a toddler, digging beach sand one December evening. He stood like a rock, his squat torso wrapped in a dark suit and tie, wearing a flat-brimmed hat, with his trousers rolled up . On either side stood slimmer men in suits and ties, each holding their own shoes and one of his. "That's the new Prime Minister, D F Malan," said our nanny.
There were only three Cape coastal holiday resorts then. The United Party went to Hermanus, the National Party trekked to The Strand and the business tycoons holidayed in Muizenberg.
Malan's bland southeaster-swept beach with its featureless sea view now offers a " panorama of the full sweep of the breathtaking False Bay coastline", which "all the apartments will be splayed to capture" in a building "complete with elegant, contemporary curves symbolic of their sea-side locale".
Stefan Antoni's "flowing, curvaceous form", says the architect himself, is "inspired by some of the great iconic buildings of the world and the pure form of American sculptor Richard Serra."
And all it will cost you is R1.5-million for a 100mē two-bedroom unit and R4.5-million for a four to five bedroom 260mē duplex penthouse.

This Project has been cancelled due to a lack of investors and the land in question is for sale.
