Baha Mar development on track

Baha Mar will include four new hotels — a Mondrian, a Rosewood, a Grand Hyatt and a casino hotel — as well as a convention center and Jack Nicklaus golf course. (Credit: www.bahamar.com)

The $3.5 billion Baha Mar development is about halfway completed and will open on schedule in December 2014, said Robert Sands, senior vice-president of administration and external affairs. A midway “topping off” celebration marked completion of the 25th and final level of the Baha Mar Casino & Hotel, the tallest structure at the 1,000-acre resort, located on the south shore of New Providence Island.

Baha Mar will include four new hotels — a Mondrian, a Rosewood, a Grand Hyatt and a casino hotel — as well as a convention center and Jack Nicklaus golf course. It’s being marketed as the Bahamian Riviera and will encompass the existing Sheraton and Wyndham hotels and have 2,200 rooms.

Finally, in late January, Bahamians voted overwhelmingly against the legalization of so-called “web shop gambling” and the establishment of a national lottery. Under current law, Bahamian citizens are prohibited from gambling in casinos at island resorts, leading many to underground gambling centers known as “web shops” to bet on numbers in televised U.S. lotteries.

Mega Resort Team Sets Its Sights On Getting Extra 300,000 Airline Seats To Nassau

As of Tuesday, April 9, 2013

By NATARIO McKENZIE

Tribune Business Reporter

[email protected]

TOURISM officials along with Baha Mar executives are continuing their push to get an additional 300,000 airlines seats to Nassau per year to facilitate the mega resort, director general David Johnson telling Tribune Business, “We have to make it happen’.

“We are continuing our planning with Baha Mar team members in the mix. We are still bit early in terms of any specific commitment. For the airlines, their forward planning is 6-9 months out. We want to be early to prepare them for what’s coming in the fourth quarter of 2014. Commitments and specifics in terms of what will be agreed and when it will come on stream will not likely be confirmed much before January of next year but between now and then we have we are lining our horses so to speak and getting them acquainted with or needs,” said Mr Johnson.

Mr Johnson said: “We are looking at something like 300,000 more seats per annum. We have to make it happen. The air seats are infrastructure. If you want to get to one part of the island you have to have the road. We must have those seats because our visitors have to fly in. We are committed to causing it to happen. We have many options to get us there and we are just fine tuning the options to get us there. No one airline, or two or three will do it but if everyone increase what they are doing by 25 per cent we would get there.”

Baha Mar Bids Beat$400m Bahamian Goal

As of Wednesday, May 8, 2013

By NEIL HARTNELL

Tribune Business Editor

[email protected]

Work bidded out to Bahamian contractors has already exceeded the $400 million commitment Baha Mar made to the Government, a senior executive said yesterday, with building work “only half-way through”.

Robert Sands, Baha Mar’s senior vice-president of governmental and external affairs, told Tribune Business that the Cable Beach developer had sent $412 million worth of contracts out to bid by Bahamian contractors as at end-April 2013.

Some $229 million of this figure has already been awarded, with Mr Sands saying the contracts had been granted for “multiple works, civil, the whole lot”.

The $2.6 billion Baha Mar construction project is still some 19 months away from full completion, and Mr Sands told Tribune Business: “We have bidded out close to $412 million, and have awarded approximately $229 million, to Bahamian contractors.

“At this point in time, we have actually exceeded that [$400 million commitment given to the former Ingraham administration], and we’re only half-way through the construction period.”

The Baha Mar executive added: “It certainly reaffirms our commitment, and it also shows we have lived up to our commitment regarding the $400 million, which was originally $200 million.

“That is how we should be judged in terms of living up to creating this volume of work for local

Baha Mar had initially committed to awarding some $200 million in contracts for the Cable Beach redevelopment project to Bahamian contractors, plus create 2,000 local construction jobs.

'Worried About Baha Mar'

As of Wednesday, June 5, 2013

By NEIL HARTNELL

Tribune Business Editor

[email protected]

A well-known architect is “worried” about the $2.6 billion Baha Mar project’s prospects for success, arguing that its casino was not an “attraction base”.

Expanding on his argument that the Bahamas has failed to define its tourism product, and develop sufficiently unique attractions to prise open visitor wallets, Pat Rahming told Tribune Business that “no single casino” had the ability to act as an ‘attraction’.

Baha Mar’s Cable Beach redevelopment has at its core a casino-centric model, with the developers frequently touting it as the largest facility of its kind in the Caribbean region.

Yet Mr Rahming told this newspaper: ‘I’m worried about Baha Mar. I don’t see the attraction base, but that’s a personal thing.

“They think the attraction base is a 100,000 square foot casino. My observation is that there is no single casino anywhere that is an attraction today.”

Comparing Baha Mar, and the Bahamas, to major gaming destinations such as Las Vegas and Macau, Mr Rahming said these locations were ‘ place attractions’ due to the critical mass generated by multiple casino operators - not just one.

“It amazed me that when I went to Macau and looked at 21 casinos, where can a single casino turn into an attraction,” he added.

Calling on the Bahamas to stop altering its tourism ‘brand’ every few years, Mr Rahming used an analogy to explain why - in his eyes - so many hotels in this nation ended up failing.

“If you have a creek for the bonefish, you have a place to fish. Put some rooms there, and you have a fishing resort,” he explained.

“If you have some mountains, you have a place to go skiing. Put some rooms there, and you have a ski resort. If you’ve got a beach, a beautiful white sandy beach, you have a place to go swimming. Put some rooms there, and you have a beach resort.

“The reason most resorts in the Bahamas fail is they never find out what the attraction is that their decision to have a resort is based on.”

And Mr Rahming added: “There is no such thing as sports tourism, there is no such thing as medical tourism, there is no such things as religious tourism. There is only tourism.

Agreed. The Baha Mar will have a major impact on The Bahamas GDP - increase tourism arrivals and earnings, employment...etc.

Does anyone know when Maha Mar will start taking bookings? The official website is unhelpful in this regard. It doesn't even list an opening date. I will be visiting around November/December and hope to be among the first to visit, however I don't like my chances that it will actually be on schedule and open for business by then.

I can't say when they will start taking bookings, but opening is on the cards for December 2014.
