30.11.2011
ImprimirImprimirE-mailE-mail

Haiti: Digicel, Marriott Break Ground on Port-au-Prince Hotel Project

Marriott and Digicel broke ground on their new Haiti hotel project Wednesday morning.

The 175-room hotel is a partnership between the hotel company and the telecom giant.

“We saw the need for a leading hotel brand in Haiti to accommodate the wave of travelers coming to do business in the country,” said Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive Officer at Marriott International, in a release.

“We believe we can make a difference in Haiti by creating jobs and developing the human talent that can help lift this country over time back to its rightful place as one of the top destinations in the Caribbean.”

By : The Associated Press
[email protected]

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Construction crews last week began to build what is touted as Haiti's first four-star branded hotel, a $45 million project expected to help boost the country's economy.
The Marriott hotel will create some 200 jobs and is scheduled to open in early 2015, officials said. It will feature 175 rooms and will be located in the Turgeau area of Port-au-Prince.

The hotel is one of several planned for the capital and surrounding areas as Haiti tries to recover from a devastating 2010 earthquake that officials say killed 300,000 people.

"This is a huge vote of confidence in the future of Haiti," Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe said at the groundbreaking ceremony.

A new Marriott hotel rising from the rubble in Haiti is getting a $26.5 million financial boost.

The International Financial Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, announced Wednesday that it will provide the financing toward the hotel’s ongoing construction. The 175-room hotel is being built near downtown Port-au-Prince in the Turgeau neighborhood.

Marriott International and telecom giant Digicel broke ground on the hotel last year, and it is expected to open in 2015. It will be among several new luxury hotels in Haiti after the devastating Jan. 12, 2010 earthquake. Spain’s Occidental Hotels & Resort and U.S.-based Best Western have both opened hotels in the last six months in Petionville, a Port-au-Prince suburb. Spanish hotel chain NH Hotels also will open a new El Rancho in Petionville over the next few months.

IFC officials say the Marriott’s construction is expected to create about 300 jobs. The hotel itself will offer 200 permanent jobs. Marriott Hotels & Resorts will operate the hotel under a long-term management agreement.

Does anyone know how does this hotel position itself in terms of relative height? Is it among the top 10 tallest buildings in Haiti? In fact, what are the top 10 tallest Haitian buildings?
