Baha Mar Celebrates Significant Milestone: Casino Tower Reaches 100-foot Mark

NASSAU, Bahamas, July 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Baha Mar, the largest single-phase resort development in the history of the Caribbean, welcomed on site The Prime Minister of The Bahamas, The Honourable Perry Christie , to celebrate reaching the 100-foot mark on its iconic casino tower construction, a significant milestone that shows Baha Mar is firmly on its way to becoming the most anticipated new destination in the Western Hemisphere. "I am pleased Baha Mar has reached this important milestone on schedule. It builds credibility for the project and for our country. I congratulate every worker that has helped Baha Mar reach this 100-foot elevation mark today, and I am optimistic that many more Bahamians will benefit from the making of Baha Mar in the near future and for generations to come."

Mr. Sarkis Izmirlian , Baha Mar Chairman and CEO added: "I am incredibly proud that we have reached this pivotal point in the development of Baha Mar and am grateful for the hard work and dedication of everyone who has touched this project. We've made amazing progress on and off the construction site during the past year and a half. This 100-foot milestone is the visible manifestation that Baha Mar is credible and that all promises made at the project's beginning are being delivered. Today we celebrate that the vision of Baha Mar is a giant step closer to reality."

Reaching 100 feet in elevation -- the ninth floor level -- in its largest and important casino tower demonstrates meaningful and sustained progress in the construction of Baha Mar and puts the resort on pace for its scheduled December 2014 opening. The casino hotel, the centerpiece of Baha Mar, will host the largest casino floor in the Caribbean, with over 100,000 square feet (9,000 square meters) of gaming area and is expected to compete with the most sophisticated casinos in Las Vegas or Macau.

Uniquely Bahamian: Baha Mar Aims to Be One of a Kind
by CHRIS KJELGAARD on MARCH 2, 2011

Costing $3.4 billion to develop, the Baha Mar resort at Cable Beach five miles west of Nassau on New Providence in The Bahamas bills itself as the largest single-phase resort development anywhere on the planet.

Born in 2004, the massive project – ground for which was broken on February 21 – will be a decade in gestation before it is completed, with the aid of $2.6 billion of Chinese-bank debt financing, in 2014. Even more remarkable than the resort’s planned 1,000-acre size and its cost is the huge ambition of Baha Mar’s developers – the Izmirlian family and Bank of Nova Scotia – in trying to building the resort in one single, enormous push.

While some 6,000 Chinese workers are being imported to build Baha Mar – as usual with Chinese-financed projects, the banks insist on using Chinese labor – at least 4,500 Bahamians will also be employed in the resort’s construction. So says Robert ‘Sandy’ Sands, senior vice president of administration and external affairs for Baha Mar Resorts Ltd., the company which is directly handling development, adding that when Baha Mar is complete, 9,000 Bahamians will work in its hotels and facilities.

“The idea is to create a new resort … [which will be] a one-of-a-kind destination in the world,” says Sands. Baha Mar is intended to complement the Atlantis resort just five miles or so away on Paradise Island. Atlantis is equally big – but it is being developed in multiple phases, with four of nine phases completed to date since development began in 1998.

Cable Beach on the north coast of New Providence island in The Bahamas has lots of sun, sea, sand and lush greenery for tourists to enjoy
Development of Baha Mar starts with construction of a new four-lane semi-circular road around the southern perimeter of the resort, connecting it via an access road and roundabout to John F. Kennedy Drive, which leads directly to Lynden Pindling International Airport a few miles to the southwest. John F. Kennedy Drive and its continuation into the centre of Nassau is also being developed into a four-lane road, but that is a government project not under the aegis of Baha Mar.

...

Baha Mar itself will be built along 3,000 feet of beachfront and will feature four hotels, which will together contain a total of 2,250 guestrooms. These hotels – a 300-room Morgan Hotel, a 250-room luxury Rosewood, a 700-room Hyatt convention hotel and a 1,000-room casino hotel for which a brand partner has yet to be agreed – will be marketed as the resorts of Baha Mar, according to Sands.

The resort will feature many other facilities. They will include a 200,000-square-foot convention center, the largest in the Bahamas, which will also host entertainment and sporting events. The casino associated with the casino hotel will be 100,000 square feet in area and will be the largest in the Caribbean. Baha Mar will also have about 50 time-share accommodation units, but no fractional-ownership partner has been identified yet.

Additionally, a 50,000-square-foot retail village round Baha Mar’s “show lake” will feature unique shops, restaurants, Bahamian nightclubs and food-and-beverage outlets. The resort will also feature a Jack Nicklaus-designed, championship-standard golf course and Baha Mar already owns 450 acres of land near the airport, 10 minutes’ drive away, to give it the option to add a second golf course if desired.

While original plans for the resort included an option for a seaside marina, development of such a facility was found to be unsuitable environmentally. Instead, Baha Mar has an option to use land at Arawak Cay a couple of miles away to build a marina. A 50-acre site on Gladstone Road on the southern, inland side of the resort will contain its back-of-house facilities and employee car parks. (Employees will be bused into the resort itself.)

Governemnt Pays Baha Mar $45m For Cable Beach Casino

As of Thursday, July 12, 2012

#By SANCHESKA BROWN

#Tribune Staff Reporter

#[email protected]

#THE government paid Baha Mar $45 million yesterday to mark the completion of the first 100 feet of the development of Cable Beach Casino.

#The payment, which will eventually total more than $48 million, was a part of the Heads of Agreement between the Government and Baha Mar that required the government to pay 50 per cent of the total cost of infrastructural works, including roads and utilities.

#According to Prime Minister Perry Christie, the government’s portion of the works to date amounts to a little over $45 million, with $3 million more to be paid on completion of all of the road works.

#“By the agreement entered into with Baha Mar, once they arrived at the 100 foot mark the government is supposed to pay its share for the road works and infrastructure. That amounted by calculation to some $45.3 million, but there will be an additional two or three million dollars for the continued road works and connecting road works,” he said.

#“It’s really a significant sum. That is why I began my speech with unscripted remarks by saying I’m coming here to congratulate them for charging me $45 million. The agreement says the payment will be made once they reach the 100ft mark and they announced it today and so they brought me here presumably to mark this occasion knowing that the intention is that they now want to collect from us.”

#The Prime Minister said reaching the 100-foot mark is a significant milestone that shows Baha Mar is on pace for its scheduled December 2014 opening. He also said he expects the company to make an announcement very soon as to who their casino partner will be.

Baha Mar is a self-contained resort metropolis and a prime example of Mike's adept master planner, taking its cues from the local surroundings and culture. The design seamlessly weaves together architecture with nature, inspired by the pristine beaches, the islands natural beauty and the dynamic local culture. Mike has evolved a unique Bahamian vernacular by combining the area's Colonial, European and African roots into a feast for the senses. This enormous multi-phase project will become the Caribbean's largest single destination resort.

Baha Mar will feature hotels by St. Regis, W, Westin, and Casino Hotel. The resort will also include a casino, meeting facilities, spas, and a golf course by Jack Nicklaus. All on 1,000 acres of Nassau oceanfront. Boasting a retail, dining and entertaining village, and residences available for sale, Baha Mar will be the Caribbean's largest single-phase destination resort. Anticipated opening pending (2013).

This unique and ambitious project defines what MHA is all about: Seamlessly blending functionality with sophisticated aesthetics, architecture with nature, into a unique environment that attracts clientele and creates an enhanced experience.

Baha Mar Resort Project Moving Forward in the Bahamas

January 21, 2013 | 12:47 am | Print

By Alexander Britell

NASSAU —The Baha Mar resort project, the largest in the Caribbean, is moving forward with construction toward a planned December 2014 completion date.

The multi-billion-dollar Baha Mar, which is being financed by the Export-Import Bank of China, is currently being built by a several-thousand-strong force of workers from China. It launched construction in 2011.

“We see ourselves as positioning it as an international brand – so we’re not just looking at Caribbean competition, but offering it as the best on an international basis,” Robert Sands, senior vice president for external affairs at Baha Mar, told Caribbean Journal.

The project, which has dubbed itself the “Bahamian Riviera,” will ultimately offer around 2,200 hotel and residential units spread across four resorts; one, the Baha Mar Casino & Hotel, along with three from major international brands Mondrian, Grand Hyatt and Rosewood.

Above: construction is plowing ahead; it first launched in 2011

The largest will be the Baha Mar Casino Hotel, which will feature 1,000 rooms and 100,000 square feet of gaming space, followed by Grand Hyatt at Baha Mar, with 700 room and a large-scale conference centre.

It will also offer a golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus, which is scheduled for completion in late 2013.

The residential component of the resort will include 307 units spread across the property’s different branded resorts.

“Certainly, the Bahamas is already a high-perception, well-traveled-to destination already — but the second transforming project such as Baha Mar will further propel the Bahamas as a leader in tourism, certainly in the Bahamas, but also in the Western Hemisphere,” Sands said.

He was of course referring to the Atlantis resort, the flagship of Bahamian tourism, and the country’s single-largest private employer.

While one might see the two resorts, one on Cable Beach, the other on Paradise Island, as potential competitors, Baha Mar Chief Marketing Officer Denise Godreau said the two would fill largely separate niches.
