KLM adopts the initiative

After successful negotiations with XCOR Aerospace, the owners of the cute yet powerful LYNX spacecraft, the Dutch national flight operator KLM has adopted the SXC initiative and has started selling tickets for 70.000 EUR per ticket. In the LYNX spacecraft one single candidate astronaut sits right beside the pilot and has the best possible outlook as from the spacious cockpit to experience the valuable 5 minutes of absolute weightlessness during the free fall while gliding and swirling down back towards Earth from 103 km up in the atmosphere.

SXC Spaceship

The building body of the earthbound SXC terminal is conceived as to evoke the power of the rocket engines to take off into outer space, and at the same time evoke the lightness of a Spaceship glider swirling down to Earth. The shape of the SXC evokes strength and elegance, boldness and sensitivity, it is both masculine and feminine. The shape is intended to attract both professionals and tourists. The design and the styling of the SXC spaceship is intentionally related to state-of-the-art developments in automotive, naval, aerospace and environmental design.

Space Experience

The economic motor of the SXC spaceship is an attractive mind-blowing Space Xperience for the tourists. The experience will be designed as to immerse the public into space immediately outside the planet’s crust and the thin layer of the atmosphere of Earth. What will life be out there? How does it feel to be weightless? What do we see from up there? Simulators and interactive virtual reality situations will be designed as to guide the public deep into these strange new worlds. Both the Galactic Universe in outer space and the Quantum Universe in inner space will be explored. We people live our exciting lives on the delicate crust between outer and inner space.

Initiation rite

When the public for the Space Xperience arrive, they pass the hangars and may get a glimpse from a secure distance to the LYNX spacecrafts. Then they step into the body of the spaceship to get their electronic badges. The Space Xperience tour starts in the Outdoor Theater, carved out into the coral rocks. There they are welcomed to the theme of the Space Xperience by a 4D movie. After the introduction they step down deeper into the carving and are asked to step into the capsule lifting them up to the upper floor where the immersion into the Space Xperience installation starts. The purpose of this elaborate initiation ride is to transform the sense of reality of the public, to give them the illusion to step into another world, to leave the world as they know it behind and step into the world to come.

Space Xperience Curacao exterior

Routing

The trajectory through the immersive experience physically leads the public, level by level, down to where they started. The public swirls down like the LYNX glider does. The public experiences a thrill which runs parallel to the excitement of the astronauts making the real trip into outer space, but with different means. The routing of the Space Xperience cascades level by level down to ground floor level. The plateaus become bigger each step, relating the experience of space travels to always larger environmental and universal subjects: from LYNX to space station, to Earth atmosphere and climate change, to the expanding Universe and finally down to the Deep Sea space. A combined ticket for tourists of this Space Xperience and Seaquarium’s Submarine immersion experience may be considered.

Space experience - routing tourists: section

The commercial outlook

Space travels, like going up with the LYNX, are the predecessors of future commercial space flight in the mesosphere. Up there is much less friction resisting the propulsion of the spacecrafts. It is expected that it will be feasible within ten years to launch the first operational trans-world flight, surfing in space from Europe to Australia, within a mere two hours. That is exactly why KLM is interested, living up to the pioneering role they played hundred years earlier when launching their first commercial flights in Europe.

Space Xperience Curacao

The ambition of the Space Xperience Curaçao [SXC], supported by the Curaçao authorities and their entrepreneurs, is to create a major tourist attraction for the Caribbean, hosting the future operator Space Xpedition Corporation for Galactic Travels, while offering a venue for international scientific space research. The XCOR Lynx space vehicle will launch the future astronauts up to a height of 100km above Earth, offering them a life-changing experience inspecting the Earth from above. The SXC landmark building is conceived as a spaceship that has landed on Earth, and seems ready to take off again, The building body of the SXC spaceship evokes the power of the rocket engines taking people high up into the atmosphere, and at the same time takes on the lightness of the XCOR Lynx glider swirling down to Earth. The articulated boomerang shape of the SXC combines strength with elegance, boldness with sensitivity, emotion with technology. The fast forward shape of the SXC connects the earth with the sky, attracting both professionals for the space travel and tourists for the interactive space experience exhibition. The design, the styling and the production of the SXC spaceship is intentionally connected to state-of-the-art developments in automotive, naval, aerospace and environmental design.

2012 Space Xperience | ONL1

Today is the centenary of Scott’s final log entry and what would strike an end to that ‘failed’ expedition to what was at the time, an area of our planet much less known about than even the heavens. As I write, I think of that expedition and what it say of human character and drive for knowledge. The advert for enlisting on the expedition told of terrible hardship, little pay, and almost certain death. And yet the expedition was manned. Manned by humans who wanted to know more and were determined to do so.

Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Group has, in recent years, taken the torch so to speak and pointed it skyward. The antarctic has been unraveled some and has begun to tell of humans’ impact on this sphere in the void upon which we dwell. With this data, it is becoming increasingly imperative to research possibilities for what we will do if we if we ruin it.

The 2012 Space Xperience located in Curacao, of the Lesser Antilles, and designed by ONL [Oosterhuis_Lénárd] is what could be called the fourth step in space exploration. First we had the rockets and the plunge-to-earth reentry, then came the returnable Space Shuttle, then the private crafts of Virgin and others and now, a space port to service the ever realizing possibility of private space exploration.

I am going to include the architects’ statement because I think it sums up the project much better than I could paraphrase, but there are a few points I would like to highlight. First is the mention of the use of maritime and aviation building technologies. This is fantastic! I have a boating friend who remarks to me so often of how maritime constructive technologies reinvent themselves every few years and how strange it is that buildings have been built basically the same for the last one hundred. The second point is a question. There is talk of the trajectory through the building taken visitors ‘level by level down to where they started’. I am reminded of the Escher never ending stairs, waterfall. How does one achieve this dimensional feat?

The Curacao Ambition. The ambition of the intitiators Harry van Hulten and Ben Droste *) of the Space Xperience Curacao© BV [SXC], supported by the Curacao authorities and their entrepreneurs, is to create a major touristic attractor for the Caribbean, hosting the future operator for Galactic Travels, and offering a venue for international scientific space research. The SXC landmark building, designed by the internationally renowned Dutch design studio ONL **), will be built as a spaceship, applying maritime and aviation techniques on the building body of the SXC. The SXC will be an inspiring venue both for the international scientific community, the future astronauts and for the tourists who will bring home a memorable Experience from the Space Xperience Curacao.

It seems this project is going for real. There's another planned spaceport for the Mojave Desert in California.

They changed the name of the project from Space Xperience Curacao to Caribbean Spaceport. They also launched a new website, more realistic in my opinion, with a lot of information and actual status of the project. It seems this is going to be built in the near future since all the processes required for this to happen are running.

XCOR Aerospace Seeks Curacao Spaceport

By ANDY PASZTOR
Updated Oct. 5, 2010 1:40 a.m. ET
Space-tourism company XCOR Aerospace Inc. seeks to benefit from the wave of private investors scrambling to team up with local governments across the U.S. and overseas to participate in the budding commercial-space industry.

The latest such effort, slated to be announced Tuesday, is a nearly $25-million agreement between start-up space-plane maker XCOR of Mojave, Ca., a group of Dutch investors and the government of Curacao.

The goal is to turn the Caribbean resort island's commercial airport into another Western hemisphere spaceport, and for the closely-held U.S. company to begin launching tourists from there to the outer limits of the atmosphere as early as 2014.
