Anti-encroachment drive against hawkers to continue in Salt Lake

The massive eviction drive that was launched in Salt Lake on Tuesday night is just the beginning. “More such drives will follow till all pavements along the main roads are clear of encroachments,” Bidhannagar mayor Sabyasachi Dutta said on Wednesday.

The corporation and Bidhannagar Police, in an unprecedented move, razed seven illegal structures on the pavements at Karunamoyee crossing. An abandoned ward office was also brought down. Protesting the drive, a group of hawkers on Wednesday held a rally from Laboni More to Karunamoyee, demanding rehabilitation of evicted hawkers.

“We had taken permission from the previous Bidhannagar Municipality to set up our businesses. We had requested the civic authorities to give us some time to move out. We took loans to set up our shops and now they have demolished it,” one of the evicted stallowners complained.

The mayor, however, said it was for the government to decide on the rehabilitation of the evicted hawkers. “They can move court if they want. My stand is very clear. Pavements are meant for pedestrians and not for unauthorised occupants,” Dutta told TOIon Wednesday.

State secretariat sources said the government was in principle against forceful eviction of hawkers. It was working on plans to rehabilitate licensed hawkers in New Town and Sector V.

There was some resentment among the residents of Karunamoyee Housing Estate as the police entered the area around 11:30pm to remove a makeshift stall inside its boundary wall.

However, residents of the township welcomed the move. A month ago, a residents’ forum had submitted a memorandum to the civic authorities, expressing their wish to keep the township clean and green and free from encroachments by hawkers.

Gariahat .. they are now on the roads, forget footpaths. and esplanade, earlier before 2011 there was nobody in the stretch after sudder street till park street back gate outlet. The entire pavement ni front of indian museum was totally empty for years but now sadly it is as bad as other parts of esplanade.

the main problem is they make the place dirty and that is why it looks ugly . Hawkers are there is other east asian developing countries too , but they maintain the place which they have encroached and it looks "cute" lol . But hawker zones here in india look disgusting . I don't think you need to be literate or rich to keep the area on which you stand and sell your stuff clean

IMHO, this has perhaps been by far the best possible effort to evict those illegal encroachers and rodents. This man was well-prepared, he still is...

Quote:
The only way Bidhannagar mayor Sabyasachi Dutta will back down on the hawker eviction drive that started in Salt Lake on Tuesday night is if Mamata Banerjee orders him to.

"All footpaths along our thoroughfares will be cleared of illegal structures. I know there will still be resistance from various quarters, but only if the CM asks me to stop the drive will I do so," Dutta, also the MLA of Rajarhat New Town, told Metro on Thursday.
Quote:
Some hawkers clutching Trinamul flags did try to prevent the demolition, but the police forced them to disperse.
Read more here

A vital point, indicating that this man hardly left any stone unturned.
Quote:
..."We had eight lawyers ready with all relevant documents on Wednesday, just in case anyone moved court against the eviction," the mayor said.

The police deployment for the eviction was 200-strong. "I was also present throughout the night," Dutta said.
Now it all lies in the hands of the residents of Salt lake/Bidhan Nagar, as well as the rest of the city, who still love getting their particulars cheap, and are conspicuously proud about the same.

they think it is their baper jami.. if you see their hab bhab and the way they even occupy extra space and they sit tight when u pass by, not even allowing you to walk, and think it is you who should step out into the road .and all thse new hawkers who have cropped up after 2011 and displaying tmc flags, they are the worst, too much audacity and arrogance.. If they were at least a bit proud of the place they got, they would keep it clean. Shob i to neta ke taka diye encroach kora

this ifsy line that dutta added about didi... rest assured, she will shout at him and then he will back off and they will al be tumbling in one by one.

How can we assume that?
3000 hawkers were evicted before the U-17 World Cup .
Was anybody allowed to come back after the World Cup got over?

Also this Book fair and hawker eviction correlation theory was invented by none other than Telegraph and we all know what ABP group tries to promote.

Lets keep our fingers crossed.
Complete hawker eviction and their partial rehabilitation in planned zones is going on in New Town and Salt Lake for the last 1 year.

If this model becomes successful without resistance from Opposition, we might see the extension of this model in other parts of Kolkata.

The "slum" plot that was cleared up, will become part of the fair grounds. So no chance of anyone coming back to that particular plot.

One example is the stretch along the canal along Salt Lake bypass. It was a complete mess for years but was cleared up and blockaded by building fenced parks.

There are still small pockets of dirty slums in Salt Lake especially around the eastern parts that need to be cleared out but the authorities are probably ignoring them as they are not on the main roads.

However, the question is where will these slum dwellers (suspect that many are from a neighbouring nation) or hawkers go? A whole set of hawkers driven out from Broadway have now taken up the wall of our building. I am sure they have blessings of the netas. The residents of our building are really happy too and are not complaining at all. They are getting alu potol literally at their door step without having to walk five minutes to the market. One family is making garama garam porota, chola, alur dom, cha and their business is roaring. Their is a chowmein and egg chicken roll wala and he has brisk sales all through the day. The istriwala cannot keep up with demand as lazy residents pampered with domestic helps don't know how to wash and iron their own clothes. On top of all this, the residents are happy that we all now have free security services from the hawkers as they believe the hawkers do a better job of keeping watch on robbers from neightbouring states and countries than the cops.

So, the lesson is: hawkers survive or even thrive in Kolkata because that makes good socio-economic sense for the neighbourhood in which they exist.

e.g. the entire Gariahat market area has thousands of hawkers not only because it benefits the hawkers but also because the locality consider is convenient to find everything at their doorstep at dirt-cheap prices.

Not just hawkers. Slums survive because the upper middle class and rich need maid servants, drivers, plumbers, mechanics at "affordable" wages. And those wages are not good enough to build (or rent) housing for the lower income groups within the city.

Despite all the grand housing schemes, the city has inadequate number of low income decent housing.

True that. Every city in INdia has its share of slums of low-income neighbourhoods which makes maid servants affordable and easily available.

The grim socio-ecnomic reality that is often missed by us who wish to see a city devoid of hawkers and slums.
