The Civil Aviation Authority has acquired land to embark on the expansion program of Entebbe International Airport.

CAA deputy managing director, David Mpango Kakuba said Thursday government allocated the national aviation body 66.5 acres of land to kick start the expansion works of the country's main airport.

He told reporters in Kampala that the government has given CAA part of the land that belongs to the ministry of agriculture in Entebbe to establish a modern cargo center to decongest the airport.

Kakuba explained that they have earmarked sh60bn in internally generated funds to expand the aircraft parking area and maintenance center.

CAA to use Shs60 billion in initial airport expansion

IN SUMMARY

The Shs60 billion will be the initial amount needed for the expansion of sections of the airport.

Civil Aviation Authority is seeking to raise at least Shs60 billion to kick start the rehabilitation of Entebbe International airport.
The project that was approved by the government is likely to kick off this year, under a public private partnership with CAA.

CAA deputy managing director, David Mpango told journalists in Kampala yesterday that the Shs60 billion is an initial amount, which will be used to construct a new new shopping mall, modern cargo and passenger terminals as well as expansion and construction of a modern car parking lot.

“We are now seeking to partner with private partners to raise the funds. Shs60bn is what is needed in the short term to kick start the project, however, to accomplish the entire project, we need far more than the Shs60 billion,” Mr Mpango said.

CAA is working out a national aviation master plan with International Civil Aviation Organisation to rework the entire airport, a move that will give proper estimates of the funds needed.

Facilitating the expansion
To facilitate the expansion, CAA received an additional 66.5 hectares of land from the government to enlarge the landing field which apparently has been more busy with an increase in traffic. However, the land, is still small to give the airport a competitive advantage over other airports within the region.

“Jomo Kenyatta was given 200 hectares yet it is already big. We need more land if we are to undertake a proper expansion plan,” Mr Mpango said.
Passenger traffic recorded at Entebbe Airport for the months of April and May grew by 13.3 per cent bringing the current passenger numbers to 189,027.

However, this will not be the first time CAA will be receiving funds for purposes of expansion and upgrade. In 2007, during the preparations for Chogm, CAA received Shs103 billion to among others construct the VIP lounge, construction of watchtowers.
