I wonder if it will focus on alternative transport (bus, bikes and maybe trams), or just business as usual? Now would be a good idea to start creating corridors so that they're not built out, losing the opportunity to create new links where needed or to build up with minimal disruptions.

This is a great idea if the prior planning is put in place.
It would be great to see a permanent Urban Boundary being put in place for Geelong. One that wont be altered afterwards.

GEELONG is on track to overtake Hobart and Darwin and rival the Gold Coast in terms of population and growth.

Yesterday, Planning Minister Matthew Guy spoke exclusively to the Geelong Advertiser and revealed his prediction for our city after the release of the G21 Regional Growth Plan.

Mr Guy said the 40-year blueprint for Geelong secured the local economy, jobs and liveability of the region.

In a wide-ranging interview, Mr Guy also said the City of Greater Geelong could charge higher rates for derelict buildings through the new Ministerial Guidelines for Differential Rating.

And he announced an Activity Centre Zone to oversee Geelong's growth and development.

The zone would encourage a mixture of uses and be a focus for business, shopping, working, housing, leisure, transport and community facilities.

Mr Guy was bullish about the future of Geelong, asserting it would become a much bigger city than the Tasmanian and NT capitals.

"In 20 years from now, Geelong will be substantially larger than Hobart and Darwin and similar in size to the Greater Gold Coast," he said.

Unveiling the G21 Growth report, Mr Guy said a new Geelong Planning Scheme would assist with new jobs, further investment, housing and additional commercial development.

"I have introduced an Activity Centre Zone that will oversee the ongoing growth and development of Victoria's second largest city, Geelong," he said.

Brownbill Ward councillor Michelle Heagney, who holds the portfolio for Central Geelong, said the zone would ensure that views were shared from public spaces and along key view corridors.

"The Activity Centre Zone seeks to maintain the visual dominance of prominent landmarks, including St Mary's Basilica spire and retain views to significant structures and features," Cr Heagney said.

With derelict buildings, Mr Guy said the council had the ability to charge higher rates, subject to the State Government guidelines.

"The Local Government Minister (Jeanette Powell) made an announcement allowing councils to target, through a rate structure, ... derelict sites," he said.

"You don't want a black tooth standing out in the middle of a central city area."

Mr Guy also met Geelong Mayor Keith Fagg to discuss strategies for the CBD and forthcoming zoning reforms for commercial and residential areas. Cr Fagg said the new Activity Centre Zone would simplify planning controls in Central Geelong and create a "one-stop shop" to replace multiple zones, overlays and height controls.

"By consolidating the existing zones and controls into the one Activity Centre Zone, the planning process will be clearer and simpler," he said.

Looking forward to not only seeing Geelong grow in size but also for the CBD area to develop. Would also like to see some attitudes in the area change... only need to look so far as the comments below this article to see...

A more modern looking Dublin?

I'm waiting for the day that Geelong appears on skyscraperpage: http://skyscraperpage.com/

Currently doesn't have any buildings tall enough when you do a search for the city...

Here are a few of the images from that link... the others came out far too small:

I think they will be used for the afl game between Geelong and Gold Coast in round 10?

I am astounded that they have put one of the light towers in the gap, which is where 2 bays of the new stand were removed due to cost over-runs. Now they won't ever full that gap and although there will be a new scoreboard there soon, I do hope at least, they will complete the lower level. This is very poor management by the City of Geelong, Geeling Football Club and the AFL.

I think that light tower is actually set behind where those 2 bays were goingto be, so it would not effect any further development. i will check it out in the morning for you.

The lights look great. It does look odd so close to the field though.

Completing the same design as the new stand around most of the ground would be a great outcome, but lots more $$ needed for that.

The base of the new light tower is shown here. You will see that it's sitting in the way of the stand being extended right around to fill the gap.

if in the future they extend/complete the stand moving the light woudlnt be an issue. its likely there to fill the gap a little rather then have a gaping chasm between the stands.

if they eventally get 40million? to complete the stadium using 1mil of it to relocate the light to complete the stand wouldnt go astray.

A bit of forward planning wouldn't go astray either.

I don't think the stand could be expanded much further around though given the stand next to it is only fairly new and there isn't that much room there to extend around.

What will be happening with that space though? Will seats be added to the cut out part on the lower tiers? The cut out part does look abit awkward.
