I must admit Hoyts totally made the place look like a shopping centre rather than a cinema, particularly inside the cinemas themselves.

So much for their touted "grandest Hollywood Style"... it had NO style.

They had a projection box 120ft long by 30ft wide running the width of the building (see from 6:30 in the video below) and the cinemas lined up along both sides, and one big box office. A real revolution in movies.

The new centre looked like an airport terminal and was the bees knees, with bars, a restaurant, arcade machines, a Maccas in the basement... the photos don't show how massive it was before it was closed in. It was the largest cinema complex in the World.

You could go there with a group and split up and see different films at the same time. Our teacher took the class to see Star Wars but some of us had already seen it so watched New York, New York.

Heres the most amazing Super 8 home movie footage from 1977

They were the good new days.

What annoys me is how difficult it is to get photos of the cinema doors.

They were just fantastic. I know in the PDF you can see 4 and 5.

In those days no camera phones.

I miss this place, they kept the old Luna Park faces so the Power House should have been given the doors.

The doors were simply painted over

From the video it seems that all the projection room staff were either boozed up from the in-house bar, or that watching the same movies continuously drives you insane.

Cinema 4 photo needs to be flipped horizontally. "EXIT" sign is in reverse.

Cheers.

Hi prp002

I dont know how to post photos but here is a link to the Trove NLA photo of cinema 4.
http://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-145304653/view
Its shows it around the right way as the word EXIT above the stairwell is not in reverse.

Cheers mate
