How much is still left to do? I'll be there during the first days of June, any chance of it being open by then?

Yes, surely.
But electric wires are still not in place.

METRO/TRAMWAY - News

Trams keep their tests between Albolote and La Caleta.

Source: Cadena SER (14/Dec/2015, article in Spanish / INCLUDES VIDEO)

In the video above you can see one tram running wireless. I didn't remember they could do that.

Authorities now say that the first section (Albolote-La Caleta) could open by the end of 2016.

The problems are two:

-CAF is very late in the delivery of the trams (or more exactly, the Andalusian regional government is being very late at paying them ).

-Adif is also very late in the upgrade of Granada railway station, and without that, although the line could open till La Caleta, it wouldn't be open at full pelt.

That's surprising and not in a good way. I had an impression this project was almost finished already half a year ago...

The northern part of the line could have already opened. There are already enough trams to open it. Perhaps they prefer a complete opening of the whole line, as it would have a bigger impact.

But the main problem of course is the issue of the railway station. Basically it's a problem of two different administrations being at odds with each other. Granada's tram/light metro is a project of the Andalusian regional government (PSOE - Socialists), while the refurbishment of the railway station is a project of the Spanish government (PP - centre right). Besides, Granada has a mayor from PP, who basically opposes everything related to the project. Now he even opposes the project of railway station (approved by his own party!).

There is a considerable delay in the project of the railway station, and they've spent countless time fighting with each other about secondary issues (e.g. who should build a new parking lot), while the works where halted. Now it seems an agreement was reached, but the pace of the works is really slow.

Open doors at underground stations

Yesterday two of the three underground stations of the light metro system (Méndez Núñez and Recogidas) were opened to the public for visits. The opening of the whole system is now expected for September this year, but of course that date can change.

An update of the only remaining critical part of the project, i.e. the railway station. Once Adif (the owner of the Spanish railway network) gave permission to dismantle some unused railway tracks a few weeks ago, works on the tram tracks could finally be started on that short section.

Opening of the whole line is now expected for December 2016.

GRANADA METRO / TRAM

A new milestone has been reached: the last rails have been welded at the railway station stop, so now it's time to complete electrification and signage and the works will have finished!

I hope testing doesn't take much time and we can ride the new line before the end of the year.

Installing the parts of the OHLE that were still missing, between the railway station and Armilla.

The pic was taken near Hípica stop.

Another important milestone was achieved this week when, for the first time during the testing phase, a light metro unit (aka tram) crossed the underground part of the project, reaching the southern neighborhoods of the city.

However, opening of the whole line is now scheduled for March 2017.

NEWS!

Granada light metro will open on March 31, 2017.

However, instead of being a proper opening, during its first 3 months of operation, it will only open from 9h to 15h.

Besides in April, there will only be 3 units in service, with frequencies of 30 minutes (partial services Albolote - Caleta) and 60 minutes (complete services Albolote - Armilla).

In May there will be 4 units in service and thus there will be better frequencies.

In June there will be 6 units in service and, finally, on July 15, 2017, the 13 units of the network will be finally in service, and the schedule will be extended (regular service from 6.30h to 23h). Starting from that date, frequencies will be between 8 (peak) and 15 minutes (off peak).

The official reason why the line will only open gradually is the lack of trained staff (metro drivers from other Spanish cities will have to drive the units) and the need to test the line, as well as getting neighbors and car drivers used to the new system.

All the information in Spanish can be found here:

http://www.ideal.es/granada/201702/0...209123204.html

And here (official leaflet):

Just one month before the beginning of the trial phase, last Friday a tram reached for the first time Armilla, the southern terminus of the light metro line.

Besides, it has been announced that riding on the metro will be free of charge during the trial phase (March 31 - July 15). It seems pretty obvious given that only a limited service will be offered.

As previously announced, commercial operations will start on July 15.

The new logo of the Granada light metro has been presented:

Although everybody calls it "metro", as if it were a real metro network, the actual name of the project is "Tranvía Metropolitano" (metropolitan tramway), hence "Metropolitano" as a shortcut.

It's not the most original logo I've ever seen, but it plays with the two colors of Granada's official flag:

The beginning of the trial phase with passengers has been postponed from March 31st to May 15th. Until then the testing phase will continue without passengers.
