MAKKAH: Three Saudi engineers attending the Haj Research Forum in Makkah have called for expanding the mataf, the area surrounding the Holy Kaaba, in order to accommodate more worshippers.

Abdul Haleem Khouj, head of the team that made the proposal, said it would help the mataf accommodate 128,000 worshippers per hour, increasing its capacity by 160 percent.

Abdul Wahab Alawi and Amjad Maghrabi, the other two engineers who contributed to the plan, said it would enhance the visibility of the Holy Kaaba for people sitting inside the mosque.

The plan also envisions special facilities for the handicapped to perform Haj and Umrah with ease, Khouj said, adding that they came up with the proposal after Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah called for a study on expanding the mataf. Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior Prince Naif, who is chairman of the Supreme Haj Council, opened on Tuesday the forum organized by the Haj Research Forum at Umm Al-Qura University.

Addressing the forum on Thursday, Walid Abul Faraj, vice president of King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy, said ongoing development projects in Makkah would bring about tremendous improvement in Haj services.

He noted the government’s efforts to help pilgrims perform their religious duties without difficulty.

Abul Faraj, former president of Umm Al-Qura, commended the institute’s efforts to promote Haj and Umrah services by conducting scientific studies.

« One Day in the Haram »
documentary to debut soon

« One Day In the Haram » is a 90 minutes film structured across the 5 daily Islamic prayers.
In Makkah everything is organised around the timing of these 5 prayers.
Friday 11 August 2017

JEDDAH: A 90-minute documentary titled “One Day in the Haram,” which details what it is like in the Grand Mosque in Makkah through the eyes of workers and clerics, is slated to debut in September.

The film — by British writer, producer and director Abrar Hussain — is set to be the biggest media project about the Grand Mosque in history.

The official trailer was uploaded on YouTube last week and has gone viral.

“The film is designed to attract a non-Muslim audience, to show them how important Makkah is,” said Hussain.

“We wanted to film Makkah because it was very important to show a beautiful side of Islam (so) non-Muslims can say, ‘Okay, this is how beautiful and peaceful this religion is’.”

He added: “We want to convey this message to as many people as possible, especially in the West. After film festivals, we will speak to Netflix and different TV stations to screen it.”

The Grand Mosque is the largest in the world and includes Islam’s holiest site, the Kaaba. Muslims worldwide face in its direction when praying.

There have been films about the mosque from the perspective of worshippers and visitors, but never before about the daily life of its workers.

Hussain said he wants to show how successfully the mosque is run, how organized its departments are, and how seriously its workers take their jobs. The project was very challenging because the place is never empty of worshippers, said Hussain.

It took him one year of research before he was able to start filming, because the documentary is “very detailed.”

The budget amounted to SR1 million ($266,652). The executive producer, Abdulelah Al-Ahmary, also runs the Arabian Pictures production company.

The Makkah premiere will take place in September, but the exact release date has not yet been announced.

Director Abrar Hussain spent over a year researching different aspects of the Haram,

Grand Mosque expansion work
to resume after Haj

Project, stopped two years ago,
to cost $26.6 billon

Friday August 18, 2017 / 26 Dhu al-Qaadah 1438

EXPANSION work of the Grand Mosque in Makkah resumes next month, sources said.

The $26.6 billion expansion project, undertaken by Saudi Binladin Group, was stopped nearly two years ago in the wake of a crane collapse at the site that killed 107 people, sources told Reuters on Thursday.

Work will resume after the annual Haj pilgrimage, and Saudi Binladin will pay outstanding salaries owed to staff involved in the project beginning on Aug. 20, according to a notice that the company sent to banks and which was seen by Reuters.

Banking and construction industry sources confirmed the plan. Saudi Binladin, one of the country’s top construction conglomerates, and the the Ministry of Finance were not immediately available to comment.

Development of the Grand Mosque and its surrounding area to accommodate more worshipers was halted after the fatal construction accident in September 2015, and then remained on hold as government finances were squeezed by low oil prices.

The government is now enjoying a moderate recovery in oil income, and it is keen to resume work on big religious tourism and infrastructure schemes as part of a drive to diversify the economy beyond oil exports.

Its plan to restart construction at the Grand Mosque is a fresh sign of the rehabilitation of Saudi Binladin, which was temporarily banned from winning new state contracts after the crane collapse and has been damaged financially by a deep slump in the construction sector.

The Ministry of Finance has allocated a portion of this year’s budget to key projects and has been in talks with Saudi Binladin in recent weeks about restarting several big schemes, the sources said. The ministry pledged to make payments that would enable Binladin to pay its staff, they said.

Another stalled government project in which Saudi Binladin is involved, the $3.5 billion construction of the Abraj Kudai hotel complex in Makkah, will restart in coming months, sources told Reuters earlier this week.

The company also restarted work earlier this year on the new King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah.

In 2015, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman inaugurated five new projects as part of the third expansion of the Grand Mosque.

The expansion projects include the King Abdullah Expansion Structure, courtyards, tunnels, buildings for service facilities and the first ring road.

late King Abdullah had laid the foundation for the expansion of the Grand Mosque in a ceremony held in Makkah in August 2011.

The project is estimated to cost over SR 100 billion and the Ministry of Finance is supervising it. The total area of the existing mosque is 356,000 sq. meters accommodating 770,000 worshipers, while the new expansion covers an area of 456,000 sq. meters.
